Man charged with murder after allegedly stabbing, killing ex-girlfriend in Miami, officials say

CBS News27-04-2025
A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Homicide Bureau announced Sunday.
MDSO said Joy Chandra Nath has been charged with murder in the death of 24-year-old Maria Camila Garcia-Molina.
According to investigators, just before 3:55 p.m., a deputy was flagged down by a woman who said her 3-year-old granddaughter was found wandering in the parking lot of her residential complex at SW 144 Street and SW 134 Avenue in Miami.
A neighbor recognized the child and escorted her to her grandmother's residence. The child had what appeared to be dried blood on her face and her clothing, according to the report.
MDSO's Vulnerable Victims Unit responded to the location and launched a child neglect investigation.
Additional deputies responded to the child's residence in attempt to locate the mother, identified as Garcia-Molina.
Deputies conduct an area search
During a search, deputies located the Garcia-Molina's vehicle parked at the Twin Lakes complex where she lived.
According to the arrest report, blood was visible on the front passenger seat and a body was found covered in blankets on the rear floorboard.

First responders said they forced their way into the car. At 6:25 p.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced Garcia-Milina dead at the scene.
She had sustained multiple sharp force injuries to her neck, torso and arms, according to police.
Investigators learned the victim had last been seen leaving her home around 12:30 p.m. with her daughter. A little over two hours later, police said her daughter was found wandering alone — something family members said was highly unusual.
The toddler, who was not physically injured, told detectives her mother had been with a man named Joy and that her mother was "hit in the head and was now sleeping."
History of stalking victim
Family members told detectives that Garcia-Molina had an ex-boyfriend, identified as Nath, who had a history of stalking her. According to the report, Garcia-Molina had previously obtained a temporary restraining order against Nath.
Family members also told police that Nath had confronted Garcia-Molina and her new boyfriend Friday night at Dolphin Mall.
Around 12:10 a.m. Sunday, while investigators were still processing the crime scene, Nath returned to the Twin Lakes complex in his black Lexus ES350 with the headlights off, according to the arrest report.
According to police, deputies stopped him and noticed scratches and bruising on his face, neck and arms. Nath told deputies he had Garcia-Molina's belongings and planned to return them to her.
After being taken into custody, Nath waived his right to an attorney and gave a recorded statement, admitting he had spent time with the victim and her daughter earlier that day. He said they had met for breakfast at Casavana Cuban Cuisine and later parted ways.
Nath claimed he returned home to wash his clothes before being contacted by the victim's brother.
A search of Nath's vehicle revealed the victim's purse, cellphone and several forms of ID inside. Cell phone data showed the victim's phone traveled from her residence to Nath's residence, then back to the area where her body was found.
Nath was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and child abuse.
The investigation remains ongoing.

After Community Push, Square Diner Server Will Be Released Following Two-Month ICE Detainment

is the lead editor of the Northeast region with more than 20 years of experience as a reporter, critic, editor, and cookbook author. Luis Fernandez, a longtime server at Tribeca's Square Diner, is expected to go home within a day after a judge ordered his release from ICE custody on Monday, August 11. The decision follows weeks of organizing by neighbors, regulars, and coworkers who believe the arrest never should have happened. Fernandez, originally from Ecuador, has lived in New York for over 35 years and has green-card status; he currently lives in Queens, is married, and has two children. For over seven years, he has been a familiar face behind the counter at the 100-year-old Square Diner (33 Leonard Street, at Varick Street), until he was detained on June 24 after checking in on his pending asylum application on Long Island. ICE confirmed the arrest in a statement to the Tribeca Citizen in July. After Fernandez, 50, was detained in late June, according to the Tribeca Tribune, he went from 26 Federal Plaza to New Jersey to Maryland and finally to the IAH Polk Adult Detention Facility in Livingston, Texas. In the NYC facility, Fernandez says he was fed a bagel, a bottle of water, and a chocolate chip cookie each day, according to colleagues who kept in touch. From the start, the community moved quickly to rally behind him. Kris Brown, a 25-year Tribeca resident who lives on the same block as the Square Diner, wrote a letter to ICE shortly after Fernandez was detained. 'After sharing [it] with a neighbor and friend, Winsome Brown [no relation], she posted it on her Instagram account, which went viral within a few days [and got] almost 200,000 views,' Brown tells Eater over email. That attention, Brown says, 'led to additional attention to Luis's situation, outreach by the local Tribeca press … [and] a reach-out by my neighbor and a fellow lawyer Claude Millman, who I helped put in touch with Luis's friend and Square Diner coworker Irma Fernando.' Through Fernando, Brown was connected with Fernandez's daughter Liset, and helped coordinate with the legal team ahead of a July 30 virtual status hearing. In the interim, 'We were able to be in touch with Luis via Liset to impress upon him the need to ask for a bond hearing … and to let the judge know that he was represented by counsel and had the money to post a bond, as well as remind the judge that he had a previously scheduled amnesty application pending,' say Brown. Tribeca Citizen reports that, at Monday's bond hearing in Livingston, Texas, senior attorney Carl Relles represented Fernandez, after first-year associate Pam Rosero prepared the motion and supporting documents. A GoFundMe campaign organized by Fernando with help from Brown and Millman raised more than $21,000 — enough to cover Fernandez's $5,000 bond, legal fees, and other expenses, according to Tribeca Citizen. The bond amount was lower than the $10,000 figure that's typical in similar cases. Nationwide, according to a study from the Center for Migration Studies released in 2024, as many as 8.3 million undocumented immigrants work in the U.S. economy, representing 5.2 percent of the workforce. Of those, around a million people or more work in restaurants. For many in the neighborhood, Fernandez's release is a win not just for him, but for a tight-knit community that refused to stand by. 'While Luis's record is not perfect,' Brown says, 'his transgressions occurred long ago, and since then, he has been an outstanding neighbor, worker, and father.' In addition, Fernandez's next court date related to his previously scheduled amnesty application is scheduled for January 30, 2026. Until then, regulars are looking forward to having him back pouring coffee and trading stories at the Square Diner's counter — the same spot where his neighbors first rallied to bring him home.

Reggaeton artist Jhayco arrested and accused of cocaine possession in Florida

The Reggaeton musician and songwriter, Jhayco, was arrested. According to an arrest report obtained by a local NBC news station in Miami, 32-year-old Jhayco — whose real name is Jesus Manuel Nieves Cortes — was arrested on drug charges on Tuesday morning in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The report claims the songwriter was allegedly driving a red two-door Corvette that was only driving 5mph along Southwest 8th Street before 3 a.m. ET. When the vehicle then came to a complete stop and did not move for over one minute, Jhayco was pulled over by the authorities. As an officer approached the car, they said they 'smelled the strong odor of cannabis,' while the car's driver had 'white powder on his pants and white powder on his nose.' After the Reggaeton artist was allegedly unable to give the authorities a driver's license, he was asked to vacate the car, where a routine records check could not find a driver's license under his name. When the Corvette was searched, the police allegedly found two black pouches with 7 grams of suspected cannabis in each one. Upon searching Jhayco's pockets, the authorities claimed to have seen three 'clear baggies with suspect powder cocaine,' totaling about two grams. The musician was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at 4:24 a.m. and was arrested and charged with cocaine possession of 20 grams or less of cannabis, with a bond set at $3,000. Deputies said Jhayco had made a spontaneous statement, which was redacted from the publicly released arrest report. No further information has been revealed at this time. Jhayco, who was born in Puerto Rico, previously performed under the stage name Jhay Cortez. In 2019, his debut album, titled Famouz, reached number five on the Top Latin Albums chart. He is most well-known for his collaborations with other Latin artists, such as Bad Bunny, and the songs 'No Me Conoce - Remix,' 'DÁKITI,' and 'CÓMO SE SIENTE.' His most recent album from September 2024 was titled Le Clique: Vida Rockstar (X), which was recorded in studios across the world, including Paris, Madrid, Puerto Rico, Los Angeles, and Miami.
