In a vibrant display of creativity and environmental consciousness, young fashionistas from Riverton Primary School, as well as Elswood and Bellville South High Schools, captivated audiences with their unique runway show, where discarded materials took centre stage. The event, themed #BeatPlasticPollution in honour of World Environment Day 2025, showcased the innovative designs crafted from what many would consider trash, advocating for a new perspective on waste management.
Hosted at Riverton Primary School in Bishop Lavis, the runway event was a culmination of the hard work put in by members of the Eco-Club, which has been supported by GrandWest and the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) for the past three years. Each young designer illustrated how creativity can transform everyday waste into wearable art, sparking a dialogue about the importance of recycling and environmental stewardship among their peers and teachers.
Mervyn Naidoo, General Manager of GrandWest, commended the students on their outstanding efforts.
'These learners have done us proud. Through their creativity, we have all been made aware of how senselessly society disposes of waste. It is critical that each and every person learns to recycle,' Naidoo said, emphasising the significant impact such initiatives have on community awareness.

Crowning change: Lee-Ann Naidoo breaks barriers as Global Mrs Supranational Tourism Queen 2025

Former Durbanite, Lee-Ann Naidoo, recently made history after being crowned Global Mrs Supranational Tourism Queen Ambassador Worldwide 2025 in a dazzling ceremony held in Yangon, Myanmar. This triumph marks a significant cultural moment as Naidoo becomes the first Indian South African to hold this prestigious title, designed to celebrate married women from every corner of the globe. Naidoo's journey began with her victory at the Mrs Supranational SA pageant earlier this year. The Mrs Supranational competition is part of the broader Supranational pageant family, which also includes Miss and Mister Supranational events, focusing on evaluating participants through public speaking, community engagement and overall presentation skills. "I am a proud mother of three and a professionally trained chef,' Naidoo shared, reflecting on her diverse life journey that transitioned from kitchen artistry to pageantry. "My journey has taken me from the kitchen to the crown … A baker turned beauty queen. I am also a survivor of gender-based violence, a role that fuels my advocacy and purpose," shared Naidoo. Beyond the stage, I am a pageant coach and a committed advocate for women's empowerment. I am passionate about philanthropy and community service, particularly in addressing period poverty and combating gender-based violence." Her resilience and commitment were undeniably shaped by her South African heritage, fostering a belief in her responsibility to represent her community on the global stage. "Growing up, opportunities for Indian women to enter the world of international pageantry were few and far between. But we saw them, admired the glamour and dreamed quietly. They always felt distant, like something meant for someone else. "For an Indian girl in a close-knit Indian community, global stage pageantry felt just out of reach," she said. For Naidoo, the journey to this moment was one filled with preparation, enthusiasm and a forceful drive to challenge herself. 'I never imagined competing at an international level,' she confessed, crediting her father's dreams and teachings of etiquette and poise as pivotal in her early life. "From a young age, he immersed me in the world of modelling and pageantry ... Though I often resisted, he remained firm in his belief that his daughters were destined for the world stage. 'At 42, I finally stepped into the dream he had planted decades earlier. Winning Mrs Grand South Africa in 2023 and going on to represent my country internationally was more than a personal victory; it was the fulfilment of my father's dream. "Bringing home the title was a moment of immense pride, not just for me, but for South Africa. It was a win for every dream he quietly nurtured, and I am deeply grateful to have honoured him and my country in that way. Preparing for the pageant required immense discipline and commitment, pushing Naidoo to new heights physically, mentally and emotionally. 'I overcame doubts and challenges, including securing sponsorships and managing my family responsibilities. Ultimately, I drew strength from my husband and my sister queens, reminding myself that I was not alone in this fight for excellence.' Lee-Ann Naidoo being crowned at the pageant. Image: Facebook. The preparation process included training in essential skills such as posture, public speaking and even an energetic talent performance of Shakira's "Waka Waka", which Naidoo selected for its themes of unity and empowerment. Her every move was aimed not just at winning but to represent South Africa with dignity and pride. Competing against over 60 talented women from around the world, Naidoo spoke of the "sisterhood" that developed during the competition. "The sisterhood among the international queens was something extraordinary. Though we were competitors, we laughed together, cried together and shared moments that have created lifelong bonds." When the moment arrived for the announcement of the winner, Naidoo described feeling surreal and overwhelmed. "Honestly, it took me about six hours before the reality of my win truly sank in. I didn't fully grasp the magnitude of my title until it was thoroughly explained by the directorship. "It was an incredible moment, one I still find hard to believe, a genuine pinch-me experience." Since stepping off that stage, life has begun to transform dramatically for Naidoo, with opportunities for fashion week in Milan and Paris already on the horizon. "I'm excited to see how my year unfolds and what doors are opened as I embark on a queen's journey holding the crown for South Africa." Lee-Ann Naidoo. Image: Facebook. Naidoo's message to other aspiring Indian South African women is to dream big and embrace their unique paths. "Seek knowledge, master your craft and greatness will follow. Lead with an open heart, filled with love and acceptance and inspire others by example. "Remember, we rise stronger as a collective ... Stay true to yourself, lead with honour and integrity, and embrace your authentic self fully ... The human spirit triumphs over adversity when we believe in our own strength and capacity. Fight for your dreams, live with purpose and serve others generously."

Reality star and businesswoman Sorisha Naidoo, known for her role in "The Real Housewives of Durban", has taken to the waves for an enchanting European holiday alongside her husband, Vivian Reddy and their two children, Saihil and Kalina. The family set sail with award-winning cruise line, Celebrity Cruises, and their journey has been nothing short of spectacular. Documenting their unforgettable trip through a series of vlogs on her social media platforms, Naidoo has given her followers a front-row seat to their adventures. From luxurious days at sea filled with yoga classes and artistic glass sessions aboard the cruise ship, to explorations of historic destinations on port days. "Day one on the cruise, we boarded and watched the ship sail away ... Lots to do on the Celebrity Cruise ship, and I think for me it was about the yoga classes, the hot glass sessions, but we decided to take it easy into the night and have a little bit of sushi ... "Our first port day, we got to go to Pompeii. We saw tons of things," said Naidoo during the video. As the ship made its first port stop in Pompeii, the family was eager to embark on their exploration. The vlogs reveal Naidoo and her family experiencing the enchanting ruins of this ancient city, where history and architecture intertwine beautifully. "There's probably a million tourists at this time that we're here, so everything is packed," she continued. In a separate vlog about their excursion to the iconic Tower of Pisa, Naidoo expressed her admiration for historical structures. About a beautiful ancient church, she said: "It is so gorgeous, the attention for detail is incredible, why don't we build things like this now. I want to see more buildings like this. "I'm so tired of these glass fronts. These modern, boring, no imagination buildings, I think we need to go back in time. We need to step it up ... It's so detailed, it's unbelievable." Offering practical advice for fellow travellers, Naidoo advised to 'hold tight to your bag and keep your belongings safe,' while noting the hot Italian sun during this season. Her choice of attire, a lightweight linen ensemble, was both stylish and practical, keeping her comfortable as they explored stunning cities filled with charm and history. 'When you're going out to Italy or Europe in the prime of summer, linen is the way to go,' she recommended. Culinary experiences were also a highlight of their trip, as Naidoo described every dining experience as 'pure bliss". From fine dining aboard the cruise to sampling delectable local cuisine ashore, the family indulged in the flavours of Italy, making the most of their time together.

Yoshni Naidoo completed her 250th parkrun. Image: Supplied YOSHNI Naidoo turned a simple smartwatch challenge into a global parkrun adventure, completing her Alphabet Challenge across three continents and inspiring others along the way. Naidoo's parkrun challenge began in 2016 at North Beach in Durban. 'It all started with an Apple Watch. I was thrilled to sign up for the 'free' smartwatch program with Discovery Health. Being smart with my money, I refused to default on the fitness requirements for the free watch because I did not want to pay for it," said Naidoo, 46, of Silverglen. "My husband was less convinced about my commitment and joked that my fitness journey would not last more than six months,' she said. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Nine years later, Naidoo travelled to Australia to complete parkruns with the alphabets "Y" and "Q". 'Since South Africa does not have parkruns in areas with the alphabets 'Y' and 'Q', Australia was the perfect destination. I did parkruns in You Yangs in Melbourne and Queanbeyan in Canberra and Inverloch. This was a special chapter in my parkrun story as I got to complete my Alphabet Challenge. I am officially an Alphabeteer,' said Naidoo. 'The challenge has taken me to 58 beautiful places in South Africa, the United States and Australia. I shared priceless moments with my family and made many friends along the way." She said she was not a natural athlete but with this challenge, she discovered a new side to herself and a passion that kept her coming back for more. 'Through the parkruns, I have discovered a love for running and have found a healthy balance in my life. The weekly 5km events on a Saturday motivated me to join a running club and dive deeper into the sport, finding myself signing up for half marathons and even attempting a full marathon." Parkruns have become a family affair for Naidoo. 'The Parkrun are non-negotiable in our home. It has become a way of life for my family. My family and friends usually say I am a parkrun bully or the parkrun police. But I believe I am persuasive and good at making them lace up and join me.' 'My husband, Veldon's career as a biokineticist is a perfect fit, allowing him to share his passion and knowledge of running with others. We have nicknamed him the 'over achiever' at the parkrun because while we stick to the standard 5km, he goes for a double dose,' Naidoo said. Looking back since she first began, Naidoo said her most memorable parkrun experience was completing her 250th parkrun at a home run at the Durban Point parkrun. 'It was a beautiful day surrounded by my parkrun family. It was a special moment. Parkruns are a blast. You get to meet new people, explore new places, and enjoy the outdoors while getting some exercise. You don't have to be a seasoned runner to join. It is okay to start slow, walk or jog. The goal is to have fun and improve at your own pace,' she advised. POSTPLUS
