The Lok Janshakti Parry (Ram Vilas) is likely to soon call a meeting of its executive members to formalise a proposal urging its president and Union minister Chirag Paswan to contest the upcoming Bihar assembly elections Sources said its leaders had met on May 30 in Bihar's Bikramganj, where hours later Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public meeting, to back the idea. Paswan himself was not in the meeting.LJP (Ram Vilas) MP Arun Bharti told PTI that Bihar is central to Paswan's politics and he has repeatedly spoken about his vision for the state's development, recalling the 'Bihar First Bihari First' agenda put forth by the Union minister."This can be better voiced if Paswan reiterates the agenda from the soil of Bihar and its assembly," Bharti said, outlining the reason behind the clamour within the party for its main face to contest the assembly polls, expected to be held in October-November.The move is also being seen as muscle-flexing by this important constituent of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in Bihar. It is third biggest NDA member after the BJP and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United).Seat-sharing talks in the NDA, which is more crowded now than ever in the state, is yet to begin, and its constituents are positioning themselves ahead of what is likely to be a hard bargain.The party founded by Ram Vilas Paswan, a prominent leader from the Dalit community, sees itself as crucial to the success of the ruling alliance in the state where the RJD-Congress-Left bloc is sensing an opportunity to unseat Kumar from power after two decades amid concerns about his fitness.The LJP (RV) can summon a meeting of its national executive or state executive members to formalise the proposal for Chirag Paswan to contest the assembly polls.Paswan's decision to walk out of the NDA in the 2020 assembly polls and put up its candidates mostly against the JD(U) due to his differences with Kumar had cost the state's ruling party heavily, reducing it to a decidedly junior status to the BJP and putting the opposition within sniffing distance of power.Though Paswan's party could also win only one seat and later suffered a split but has since recovered its political mojo and won all five Lok Sabha seats it contested in the 2024 elections.Parties led by Union minister Jitan Ram Majhi and former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha are other NDA members in the state with 243-member assembly.A third term Lok Sabha MP, Paswan has never contested the assembly poll but has of late expressed his keenness for the state politics.

According to an X post by YSRCP, after the rally, MP Gurumoorthy said that the coalition government came to power by making false promises to the people, and it is ridiculous for the coalition leaders to say that today is a festival day for the people. The MP said that people think that this is not a government that celebrates festivals, but a government of pure violence. He said that the false promises given by the coalition will burn the coalition government like fire in the coming days. He warned that YSRCP workers and leaders are being harassed with illegal cases to divert people's attention from election promises, and there is no point in being afraid of such wildfires. He said on this occasion that more such protest programs will be organised against the failures of the government in the future. Sharing a video on '1 year of CBN Back Stabbing', YSRCP wrote on X, 'Super-6 turned out to be a golden duck. AP people won't forget this betrayal.' New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): After completing a five-nation diplomatic visit, BJP MP Brij Lal, part of the JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha-led delegation, said, 'Pakistan aims to hinder our progress by fueling terrorism,' highlighting the ongoing challenges India faces from its neighbour. 'Our delegation went to five countries, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. The response from all the countries was good. We wanted to show that we are a peaceful country and we don't want war. We want only development. That week, we became the fourth-largest economy in the world. We are going to be the third in two years, and by 2047, we will be a 'Viksit Bharat,'' said Brij Lal. Addressing Pakistan's role, Brij Lal stated, 'Our neighbouring country wants to slow down our progress. They want peace to be disturbed here. This has been happening for the last 4 decades. Many people are asking for the proof... I told them that the IC814 flight was hijacked from Kathmandu in 1999 for the release of terrorist Masood Azhar and two other terrorists. India demands WTO action on trade barriers, dispute resolution reform
Paris [France], June 4 (ANI): India has pushed for comprehensive World Trade Organization (WTO) reforms, calling for decisive action against non-tariff barriers and restoration of the paralysed dispute settlement mechanism during high-level ministerial discussions in Paris. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal outlined India's reform agenda at a mini-ministerial gathering of 25 WTO member countries, emphasising the need to address trade distortions and strengthen multilateral governance ahead of next year's crucial ministerial conference. Speaking to reporters after the Australia-convened meeting, Minister Goyal articulated India's three-pronged approach to WTO modernisation. 'India made a strong pitch for addressing non-tariff barriers that certain countries use to deprive others of market access, taking necessary action against non-market economies, and ensuring we have a strong dispute settlement mechanism,' he said. The minister emphasised preserving the WTO's consensus-based decision-making process while maintaining special treatment for developing nations - principles India views as fundamental to the trading system's legitimacy. India's concerns are central to the WTO's crippled dispute settlement system, which has been effectively non-functional since 2009 due to US opposition to appellate body appointments. The paralysis has left countries without recourse when trade disputes arise, undermining the organisation's enforcement capacity. While some members have promoted the Multi-Party Interim Appeal Arbitration Arrangement (MPIA) as an alternative, Minister Goyal expressed scepticism about its effectiveness. 'Only one or two members spoke about that, but there doesn't seem to be much consensus or traction to that idea. I haven't heard of any cases resolved through MPIA,' he noted. India firmly rejected attempts to expand the WTO's mandate beyond traditional trade issues, particularly opposing the China-led Investment Facilitation for Development proposal backed by 128 countries. Minister Goyal argued that such initiatives would fragment the multilateral system and create new divisions among members. 'Issues that have been mandated at the WTO should get priority and should be the first issues to be resolved,' he said. 'Issues going beyond trade should not be brought into it as it would create further differences between member countries.' The discussions addressed several longstanding challenges, including agricultural trade reforms and environmental concerns. Key agenda items included finding permanent solutions for public food grain stockholding programs and addressing overfishing practices that threaten marine ecosystems. Minister Goyal highlighted the need to resolve existing mandated issues before introducing new frameworks, reflecting India's preference for completing unfinished business rather than expanding the organisation's scope. Despite growing tensions within the 166-member organisation, Minister Goyal rejected suggestions that the WTO faces an existential crisis. 'One should not jump to the conclusion that an existential crisis has been created,' he said, calling for pragmatic problem-solving within existing frameworks. The minister emphasised collective commitment among participating countries to revitalise the organisation. 'We have all resolved to collectively work to strengthen the working of the WTO, to ensure core principles are respected and work towards global good and global growth in trade,' he stated. (ANI)
