WestJet backs down from TFW hiring plan

CBC18-04-2025
WestJet says it no longer plans to use the temporary foreign worker (TFW) program to hire captains for its regional Encore airline, a decision welcomed by the union.
In an email to CBC News, a spokesperson for WestJet said the move was due to "economic uncertainty."
The airline had previously said the program was among several avenues it was pursuing to address a labour shortage.
"We're very happy," said Capt. Tim Perry, president of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) Canada, which had criticized WestJet for pursuing the TFW program rather than improving working conditions to attract more domestic applicants.
"This is the outcome that we were looking for," he said.
Amid the final weeks of the federal election campaign, Perry said the union now hopes to push the various political parties for commitments to reform the TFW program, if elected.
In particular, Perry said he would like to see a stronger requirement that the government consult with relevant labour groups before giving an employer a green light to use the program.

$100K won by a northern Ont. man from a $1 bet

A photo of retiree, Larry Hubley of Powassan, Ont., accepting a $100,000 lottery prize after winning with Encore on the May 30, 2025, Lotto Max draw. (Supplied/Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation) Larry Hubley of Powassan, Ont., is $100,000 richer after a lucky $1 Encore bet paid off in a major way. The longtime lottery player matched the last six of seven Encore numbers in exact order in the May 30 Lotto Max draw, turning a small wager into a six-figure windfall. Hubley has played lottery games 'since the days of Wintario,' the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) said in a news release Monday. 'He enjoys a variety of games, including Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49 and Daily Grand,' said the provincial lottery retailer. 'He typically plays twice a week, using OLG's Quick Pick feature to make his selections and adding Encore to all his tickets.' 'I was shocked' 'I bought this ticket as part of my regular weekly routine,' Hubley said during his visit to the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect his winnings. 'A couple of days after the draw, I went to the store and scanned my ticket using the ticket checker. Suddenly, I saw a prize of $100,000 on the screen. I scanned my ticket again, just to be sure it was real. In that moment, I was shocked and very happy.' This is Hubley's first major lottery win and he immediately headed home to share the news with his wife. 'I showed her the validation slip, and her jaw dropped in disbelief,' he said. 'She was just as surprised and excited as I was.' Investing in the future Hubley told OLG he plans to save for the future, invest and share with family. 'Being a winner feels great!' — Larry Hubley, leaving the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto, Ont. Encore, which offers 22 ways to win, can be added to most lottery games for a dollar, with draws held twice daily. More details on the game can be found on OLG's official website. The winning ticket was purchased at MacEwen on Seymour Street in North Bay. This follows the announcement of a $34 million Lotto Max winner in the region last week. Play responsibly 'OLG supports safe play and wants to keep the fun in the game,' said OLG on its website. 'That's why OLG is proud to be a leader in promoting responsible gambling with our globally recognized Playsmart program.' Playsmart offers information on gambling games. Travellers brace for another day of cancellations amid Air Canada flight attendants' strike

Thousands of Air Canada flyers are facing another day of travel disruption on Monday, after striking Air Canada flight attendants defied a federal back-to-work order and abruptly halted the airline's plans to resume operations. It comes after travellers in Canada and abroad described chaotic attempts to secure flights on Sunday while the airline's fleet of hundreds of planes remained grounded. Lila Rousseaux, who was scheduled to fly home with her family from Zurich to Toronto on Sunday, told CBC News she spent all of Saturday glued to her phone for news about whether her flight would be cancelled. At 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, she was informed it was. I spent one-and-a-half hours on the phone with the agent … lots of turbulence, Rousseaux said. There was a lot of inflexibility in terms of what can be done, she said, adding that her suggestions to take a train to Amsterdam to catch a plane, or to fly directly to the U.S. before driving across the border, were rebuffed by the agent. WATCH | Lila Rousseaux describes 'turbulence' of rebooking flight: Rousseaux said she finally booked an awful overnight flight to Atlanta, lamenting that she is no longer being seated with her children. The distress in my family is very acute, she said. Ottawa moved to intervene in the labour dispute on Saturday, less than 12 hours after the strike and lockout took effect, with federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu saying she was invoking Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to ask the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to send the two sides to binding arbitration and to order the airline and its flight attendants back to work in the meantime. The Montreal-based airline subsequently announced early Sunday that it planned to resume flights in the evening, but just hours later, the union representing more than 10,000 flight attendants said in a statement that members would remain on strike — scuttling those plans and prompting Air Canada to cancel some 240 flights. WATCH | Travellers impacted during busy summer season: More than 30 students from across the country were in Seoul, South Korea, this past week to compete in the 2025 FIRA Roboworld Cup when their flights were cancelled, leaving the group representing Canada stranded thousands of kilometres away. Samia Karimi, director of the Canadian National Robotic Society, said the team won 15 awards at the competition but spirits plummeted quickly over the weekend after realizing they no longer had a flight home. Right now the happiness of the awards has [turned] into sadness [over] the delays, Karimi told CBC News Network on Monday. Our kids are too tired because they competed seven days — day and night. City councillor Amanda Collucci, who joined the team to receive the flag from South Korea to represent the 2026 FIRA Roboworld Cup in Markham, Ont., said they have yet to hear word from Air Canada about rebooking flights after having to extend their stay in Seoul. When we're talking about travelling with a group of 50 people, it's not easy to just rearrange travel [plans] for every single [person], Colluci said. At Vancouver International Airport, passengers stood in long lines to get the latest updates on their delayed and cancelled flights, as workers outside demonstrated with signs reading, Unpaid work won't fly. Chi Ehis told The Canadian Press she is having to pay an extra $2,000 to meet her family in Florida for a vacation after her flight was cancelled Sunday morning. 4 things to know about the Air Canada labour dispute (new window) Instead of flying straight from Vancouver, she is now taking a bus to Seattle before catching another, pricier flight. I can't scream. I have to just figure out what to do, Ehis said, adding her plane ticket cost $1,500. WATCH | Tips for Air Canada passengers from travel influencer Moxey Munch: In Toronto, Khalid Muhammadi told CBC News he flew in from Dubai en route to Edmonton, but is now stuck at Pearson International Airport. WestJet is asking eight grand; what am I supposed to do? he said. Muhammadi voiced frustrations with the federal government for not resolving the labour dispute. You knew a strike was coming … do your job. Enlarge image (new window) People sit with their luggage at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Sunday. Thousands of travellers scrambled to rebook cancelled flights after striking Air Canada flight attendants defied a federal back-to-work order. Photo: Reuters / Kyaw Soe Oo Air Canada has said passengers whose flights are cancelled will be offered a full refund or the opportunity to change their travel plans without a fee. However, it said that under Canada's airline passenger protection regulations, customers are not eligible for compensation for expenses incurred during travel delays deemed outside the airline's control. Customers in Canada are not eligible for compensation for delayed or cancelled flights, meals, hotels or other incidental expenses for situations outside the carrier's control, such as a labour disruption, the airline said. Air Canada said in a news release that its flights would resume Monday evening, although a notice on its booking page said all Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights were cancelled until further notice. enCore Energy Announces Expansion of the Alta Mesa Uranium Project

DALLAS, Aug. 18, 2025 /CNW/ - enCore Energy Corp. (NASDAQ: EU) (TSXV: EU) (the "Company" or "enCore"), America's Clean Energy Company TM, today announced the acquisition of a 5,900 acre parcel of private land ("Tacubaya") located immediately adjacent to, and east of, enCore's Alta Mesa historic and producing wellfields and Central Processing Plant ("Alta Mesa Uranium Project"). Tacubaya is expected to provide additional feed and longevity for the Alta Mesa In-Situ Recovery ("ISR") Uranium Central Processing Plant ("CPP"). William M. Sheriff, Executive Chairman of enCore Energy, stated: "On behalf of the Board, I extend our congratulations to our land department which worked for many months to assemble this strategic land acquisition that significantly expands the Alta Mesa Uranium Project. The compelling geology and location, immediately adjacent to, and on-trend with, our active and past wellfields make this a key acquisition for enCore. We will begin an aggressive exploration program, following up on mineralization discovered by Chevron in the late 1970's, which lies along projected trends extending from several of the wellfields at Alta Mesa." Highlights for the Tacubaya acquisition include: Over 5,900 acres of private land consisting of mineral and surface leases with private parties located immediately adjacent to, and east of, enCore's Alta Mesa Uranium Project; Tacubaya is a part of the Alta Mesa Uranium Project joint venture ("JV") between enCore Energy (70%) and Boss Energy Ltd. (30%); Tacubaya's uranium mineralization occurs as roll fronts in multiple stacked sands within the Goliad Formation just as it does at the Alta Mesa Uranium Project; Historical drilling completed by Chevron Minerals during the late 1970's discovered multiple uranium roll fronts located at various depths within multiple sand units interpreted to be the lower C, middle C, B and A sands, all of which have been, or are currently productive, at the Alta Mesa Uranium Project; Additional exploration will be required to fully explore and delineate uranium mineralization on Tacubaya; Projected continuation of productive roll fronts from Alta Mesa Wellfields 1, 3, 4, 5B and the currently operating Wellfield 7; and Initial exploration to include a 200-hole drilling program beginning in two key areas utilizing several rigs. Two rigs will begin in October 2025, with an additional two drill rigs being added as the program progresses. To view the project map, please visit: About the Alta Mesa ISR Uranium CPP and Wellfield ("Alta Mesa Uranium Project") The Alta Mesa Uranium Project hosts a fully licensed and operational ISR Central Processing Plant and operational wellfield located on 200,000+ acres of private land and mineral rights in and regulated by the state of Texas. Total operating capacity at the Alta Mesa CPP is 1.5 million pounds uranium per year with additional drying capacity of 0.5 million pounds. The Alta Mesa Uranium Project operates under a 70/30 joint venture with Boss Energy Limited which is managed by the Company. The Alta Mesa Uranium Project utilizes well known ISR technology to extract uranium in a non-invasive process using natural groundwater and oxygen. Currently, oxygenated water is being circulated in the wellfield through injection or extraction wells plumbed directly into the primary pipelines feeding the Alta Mesa CPP. Expansion of the wellfield will continue, with extraction to steadily increase from the wellfield as expansion continues through 2025 and beyond. The Alta Mesa CPP historically produced nearly 5 million pounds of uranium between 2005 and 2013 when production was curtailed as a result of low prices. John M. Seeley, Ph.D., P.G., C.P.G., enCore's Chief Geologist, and a Qualified Person under Canadian National Instrument 43-101 and S-K 1300, has reviewed and approved the technical disclosure in this news release on behalf of the Company.
