Elon Musk, Robert A. Heinlein and the urgent call to colonize space
On April 28, Elon Musk asked his artificial intelligence Grok to define itself. As usual, the Tesla CEO's messaging was cryptic. His posts on X (formerly Twitter), and even the names of his children, often feel like riddles, decipherable only to those in the know. But for newcomers, this moment of self-definition offered a rare clue: The name Grok was an homage to science fiction novelist Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988). Heinlein, along with Isaac Asimov (1920-1992) and Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008), is regarded as one of the "Big Three" of the Golden Age of American science fiction, which spanned from the late 1930s to the 1960s. In his 1961 bestseller Stranger in a Strange Land, a Martian uses the word "grok" to describe his way of understanding Earth. Musk echoed the spirit of the novel in a February 2025 post on X, writing: "The word 'grok' means to fully and profoundly understand something." Heinlein was trained as both an engineer and a military officer. A key figure in hard science fiction – a genre rooted in scientific and technological rigor – he also had a strong interest in psychology. In a 1947 lecture, he regretted that "too many so-called science fiction stories forget about human beings and their problems." Stranger in a Strange Land follows a human born on Mars and raised in Martian culture as he struggles to adapt to life on Earth. Gérard Klein, a leading French science fiction editor, described the novel as a philosophical tale in the tradition of Montesquieu's Lettres persanes (Persian Letters, 1721). Confronted with political intrigue and human greed, the protagonist, Valentine Michael Smith, is baffled by the Earthlings' obsession with power and property.

Francis Ford Coppola gives update amid reports of hospitalisation
ADVERTISEMENT Following reports that Francis Ford Coppola had been admitted on Tuesday to the Policlinico Tor Vergata, a public hospital in Rome, the acclaimed American director has released an update on his health. The director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now and his representative have released a statement revealing that Coppola underwent a non-emergency cardiac procedure in the Italian capital. 'Mr. Coppola went in for a scheduled update procedure' - performed by renowned Italian-born cardiologist Dr. Andrea Natale - and is 'resting nicely.' 'There was not an emergency. He went to the hospital in a car. He had a scheduled appointment.' Coppola, 86, has been a patient of Natale for more than 30 years, the representative added. 'All is well.' Coppola also posted a photograph of himself on Instagram, saying: 'Da Dada (what my kids call me) is fine, taking an opportunity while in Rome to do the update of my 30-year-old afib procedure with its inventor, a great Italian doctor — Dr. Andrea Natale,' it said. The term 'a-fib' is short for atrial fibrillation, a type of abnormal heart rhythm. Coppola was in Italy to promote his latest (and extremely polarising) movie Megalopolis , a $120 million self-funded production which premiered in Cannes last year. It had a special screening at the Magna Graecia Film Festival in Catanzaro. In our (less than glowing) review of Megalopolis , we said: 'It's all a mad jumble of heteroclitic strands that defy basic storytelling and dramatic coherence. Think Cloud Atlas by way of Southland Tales . And even that sounds better than Megalopolis actually is. (...) While this futurist fantasy sounds so insane it could border on genius, don't delude yourselves into thinking that Megalopolis is one of those ahead-of-its-time / bless-this-mess future classics made by a filmmaker with nothing left to lose. Just because the veteran director behind such classics as The Godfather , Apocalypse Now and The Conversation decides to deliver his go-for-broke magnum opus, doesn't make it any less of an indulgent folly that borders on nonsensical.' Still, we're glad he's well.

Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle ad sparks controversy online and pleases Donald Trump
In the languor of summer, investors were the first to sense the opportunity, sending American Eagle Outfitters' stock soaring by about 20% in a matter of days. The reason: a new ad campaign featuring American actress Sydney Sweeney. It was a throwback to the 1980s, with a blonde star leaning into her car engine while the viewer's gaze follows her neckline, before wiping her hands on the back pockets of her jeans and speeding off in her Ford Mustang: 1.9 million views on Instagram. At another moment, the camera lingers on Sweeney's blue jeans before moving up to her blue eyes: "My jeans are blue," says the actress after praising the passing down of genes from one's parents. "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," concludes a voice-over, creating ambiguity between "jeans" and "genes." At a third moment, viewed by 4.5 million online users, the actress puts up a poster of herself where the word "genes" is crossed out and replaced with "jeans." Whether seen as highly glamorous or hopelessly outdated, investors don't care, since the controversy has been spreading online: "Supremacist dog whistles," accused influencer Chris Glover, known as GenericArtDad, on TikTok. "The new American Eagle Ad with Sydney Sweeney? That's Eugenics. Nazi propaganda. And it's blatant. Like, you don't even need media literacy. It's that on the nose obvious," echoed author Elle M. Drew on Threads.
