Black America Web Featured Video CLOSE Source: Udo Salters / Getty This year's Met Gala leaned heavily into the legacy of tailoring, Harlem elegance, and Black cultural influence. Given the theme, S uperfine: Tailoring Black Style , we expected to see several Black designers we love. And while attendees showed up wearing nods to the past – and modern interpretations – only a few looks were crafted by Black designers. Still, when they showed up, they showed out. From bold structure to soft elegance, these creatives didn't just understand the theme—they made it their own. Designers such as Sergio Hudson, Hanifa, and Fear of God, gave us Met Gala moments for the ages. Here are a few of our top looks. Black Designers Met Gala: Savannah James Served Bossed-Up Beauty In Hanifa Source: Udo Salters / Getty One of our favorite Black Dandy interpretations of the night came from Anifa Mvuemba of Hanifa. The DMV designer turned Savannah James into a custom-tailored, yet feminine vision. Her burgundy pinstripe suit hugged her hips and cinched her waist with a nude corseted bodice layered underneath. The exaggerated white cuffs, strong shoulders, and burgundy tie gave boardroom-meets-ballroom energy. Anifa merged structure and softness with this look. Savannah owned the red carpet. Quinta Brunson Slayed In Sergio Hudson Source: Steve Eichner / Getty Sergio Hudson gave Quinta Brunson a gown that balanced sophistication, sexiness, and grace. Her striped black and white dress came complete with a matching off-shoulder blazer and a single red rose as an accent. The rose accent was chef's kiss! Sergio's garment was tailored to perfection and fit Quinta like a glove. One of several celebrities wearing Sergio Hudson, Quinta's ensemble was definitely on our best-dressed list. Ciara Floated In LaQuan Smith Source: ANGELA WEISS / Getty LaQuan Smith knows the female form, and Ciara is the perfect canvas. Her black gown was sculpted to perfection , dripping in crystal mesh that curved and hugged her like a second skin. The mesh draped her chest, neck, and hips, giving an armor-like effect. With Russell Wilson on her arm and a soft blonde pixie on her head, Ciara glided on the carpet. In the world of Black Dandy's Ciara's look was reminscent of the sultry singers of the time with an elegant, modern twist. LaQuan Smith also dressed Halle Berry and Babyface. The Morning Before The Met Gala With Sergio Hudson
Sergio Hudson getting ready for the Met Gala JayMar Photography On a rainy New York day in uptown Manhattan, at the Plaza, designer Sergio Hudson sits unshakenly sound in his hotel suite. "I only got two hours asleep," he says. His schedule, a severe mix of anxiety and restlessness, has made rest nearly impossible. Prior to our meeting, he describes his night and early morning, 'No sleep. Fitting, fitting. Breakfast—I didn't even eat half of it.' He goes on, 'Fitting, fitting, fitting, meeting. Then I had to go to this event where they were honoring me. I actually forgot I was supposed to be there until they texted me that morning.' At the event, Hudson met Whoopi Goldberg and Angela Bassett. 'I cried,' he says, 'but I had to leave that to go to another fitting.' The rest of his responsibilities, which he describes as "craziness" include leaving his hotel to go to another hotel and do one more fitting, finally wrapping up at 4 AM, only to wake two hours later for more fittings and meetings. Hudson is dressing 15 clients for this year's Met Gala. And while that is no easy feat, the theme being "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," Hudson holds a distinct advantage. This is his territory, his crème de la crème—the very essence of what he's known for. "This is who I am, this is how I see fashion." Though initially unfamiliar with the concept and cultural weight of the term 'Black Dandyism,' Hudson's perspective shifted after reading 'Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity' by Monica L. Miller. The patterns and codes described felt instantly familiar, although hidden behind a name, it was deeply rooted in the rituals seen in his Southern upbringing like dressing up for Sunday church. 'You wear your best, you show out,' he says. 'It's [Black Dandyism] mentally ingrained in me.' Sergio Hudson suit JayMar Photography Superfine tailoring, the realm Hudson is most closely associated with, embodies a sense of 'grandeur and flashiness' that, to him, has always felt like a form of rebellion. ' Throughout history, we weren't able to express ourselves or be showy,' he explains. 'So when we got into our private spaces, just among ourselves, that was our way to show personality and style .' Hudson, who specializes in fine-tailored suits, has dressed some of the most prominent Black figures in recent history — from Michelle Obama for her inauguration suit to Beyonce, Keke Palmer, and more. Yet this year's theme still challenged him. "Here's the thing with the Met Gala," he leans in, "When you first do it, you get this feeling of having to up the ante," he says. "You have to do more, you gotta' be better, you have to do bigger. But, I realized you just have to make a great look and that's what we do on the daily basis at Sergio Hudson." He continues, "We were just doing, what we're doing." Woodford Reserve, a spirits brand based in Woodford County, Kentucky, partnered with Hudson to bring him to the Met Gala. The collaboration isn't new, Woodford has worked with Hudson over the past year, previously commissioning him to design three custom looks inspired by the brand's 200 distinct flavor notes. Hudson describes the partnership as 'organic,' adding, 'I don't feel pressured by them to do things I don't want to do.' From the beginning, their connection was rooted in shared values. 'We aligned on brand ethos,' he explains, emphasizing how 'easy' the collaboration has been. 'There's nothing more American than bourbon. There's a sophistication to the drink, and more men in suits are drinking bourbon.' Sergio Hudson X Woodford Reserve JayMar Photography And the partnership is on theme, alcohol played a significant role in Black Dandyism, especially during the Harlem Renaissance. 'A portion of it is that what you're drinking emphasizes your look and your mood—it's a feeling, it's an attitude,' Hudson says. To him, Black Dandyism is far more than aesthetics, 'It's a political statement. It's you saying, 'You think I'm this, but I look like this, so I can be this. I'm living this lifestyle. I am a dandy.'' "It's what they drive, it's where they live, it's what they wear," and as a classic suitor, the tailoring is what Hudson emphasized this past Met Gala. Accentuated shoulders in suits are what we saw in his pin-striped ensemble, Quinta Brunson's pin-striped suit jacket, and John Imah's look. "I'm really big on a shoulder," big shoulders are what he wishes would make a comeback to mainstream suiting, "the stores wanted me to take down the shoulders but my customers want me to bring it back." Sergio Hudson getting ready JayMar Photography While fine tailoring and suiting might be the topic of now due to the Met Gala's messaging, Hudson is "hopeful and prayerful" that this idea has a lasting effect in mainstream fashion. "My goal is for us to normalize this because I feel like we [Black people] are unicorns that come out to play every now and then." For Hudson, the public's treatment of Black expression often feels cyclical. 'They're so great, they're so stylish, they're so wonderful. Now put them back up,' he says, mimicking the pattern he's seen play out time and time again. This kind of treatment, he explains, has sadly become normalized within the Black community. But this year's Met Gala theme feels different—like a homecoming, or as he puts it, a 'coming-out party.' He adds, 'You took a lot from what we created, and now you're acknowledging it. And you can't turn back now.'

Met Gala 2025: Sergio Hudson dressed 18 Met Gala stars, including Quinta Brunson
Met Gala 2025: Sergio Hudson dressed 18 Met Gala stars, including Quinta Brunson "Yes," Sergio Hudson planned for this. "I had a very good upbringing. My parents were very encouraging, and I decided I wanted to be a designer at around 6, 7 years old. I've never looked back." The South Carolina native, curator of his eponymous collection, now helms one of America's most famous emerging fashion brands. He famously dressed Vice President Kamala Harris and Michelle Obama for former President Joe Biden's inauguration in January 2021. But at Monday's Met Gala, which honored Black men in fashion, Hudson's designs were center stage once again. On Met Monday, over a dozen gala guests donned his custom pieces — a staggering number for even luxury brands — while some stylists picked looks for their clients from his ready-to-wear line. Tamron Hall, Keke Palmer step out at NYFW for Sergio Hudson, designer talks Usha Vance dress Days ahead of the May 5 affair, Hudson opened up about his historic ascent – and the view from atop fashion's Super Bowl, where A-list attendees strut up the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. "Although I am a Black designer, it's like 'I'm just a designer,'" Hudson says. "And I think it does pigeonhole us, too, because even Black people, when you say Black in front of something, we tend to demoralize, water down or put it in second position." "If we're not walking around calling Brandon Maxwell a 'white designer,' I shouldn't be called a 'Black designer.' That's just my opinion." Quinta Brunson, Rachel Brosnahan, New York Liberty players stun in Sergio Hudson Hudson dressed a roster of close collaborators for the gala, ranging from "The Marvelous Miss Maisel" star Rachel Brosnahan, whom he calls "my girl," to "Abbott Elementary" creator Quinta Brunson, whom he has been trying to work together with "forever." Hudson also designed looks for the Met Gala debuts of WNBA players Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones and Brianna Stewart from the championship-winning New York Liberty. Other custom clients included legendary musician Stevie Wonder, his wife Tomeeka Robyn Bracy, Usher's wife Jennifer Goicoechea, SpreeAI CEO John Imah, political strategist Huma Abedin and her future-sister-in-law Met Museum trustee Jamie Soros. Celebrity attendees and high-fashion ateliers like Hudson were tasked with reimagining the Black "dandy" for their gala attire. "I'm dressing all the people that I know, and I love. It's nobody that's outside of the Sergio Hudson world that I'm dressing," Hudson says, pointing out that "the theme is pretty much who I am as a designer, translating men's fashion into womenswear and making a beautiful statement is what Sergio Hudson is all about, so the theme is really perfect for my brand." Designer Sergio Hudson on the '90s, Beyoncé, what fashion industry is 'scared' of Defined as a "man unduly devoted to style," a previous release from the Met stated that "dandyism offered Black people an opportunity to use clothing, gesture, irony, and wit to transform their given identities and imagine new ways of embodying political and social possibilities." Hudson, who uses elements from traditional menswear and attaches them to his signature structured womenswear, calls the opportunity to dress for dandyism as an "honor." "It's definitely an honor to connect to something so easily and wholly, but I do feel like, in the back of my brain, it's like, 'Oh, wow. Are we every going to get an opportunity like this again.'" Heading into May's first Monday, Hudson had another person on his mind: the late, former Vogue magazine editor-at-large André Leon Talley. Met Gala 2024 highlights: Zendaya, Gigi Hadid bloom in garden theme, plus what you didn't see Sergio Hudson: Rachel Brosnahan, Danai Gurira, Hoda and Jenna rock front row at NYFW show "I think the unfortunate part about it all is that he's not here to see it because, of course, as a Black man who's been obsessed with fashion since probably the day he was born, I looked up to André Leon Talley," Hudson says. "And he was really the only person that I saw on those front rows that looked like me in those days. "So, to look at him and see how he dressed and, you know, his personality, he was a dandy at heart. You can't help but know that this came from his inspiration." Sergio Hudson hopes Met Gala is 'turning point' for fashion brand Despite the one-night-only theme, Hudson hopes it is a "turning point" for his brand in the "gatekept" fashion world. "(Fashion) is very gatekept. And I mean, it's not just that it's gatekept, it's like you get through one gate and then there are three more to go through," Hudson says, adding later that he is hoping "that people stand up and take notice, that this (brand) is not just a blip in time." "It's not a trend and Sergio Hudson as a designer – Sergio Hudson as a brand – is here to stay and that is something that you can invest in, should invest in," Hudson continues. "My goal is to open doors for people that wouldn't normally have access in this industry. In order for me to do that, I have to grow. So, I'm praying for growth after this." There are "all these gates until you get to Valentino status," Hudson continues. Does he aspire to reach Valentino heights? "I would say Ralph Lauren status," Hudson replies. Lauren's brand, though, only dressed a few celebrities for Met Monday. As celebrities walked up the gilded steps in his designs, Hudson opened more gates. In Talley's honor, for kids who love fashion in South Carolina. All a part of his plan. "I just want to be known as a great American sportswear designer." Contributing: Edward Segarra

WNBA superstar Jonquel Jones goes viral with crazy hairstyle at the Met Gala
WNBA superstar Jonquel Jones took on the red carpet Monday night before she takes to the court later this month. The center was one of three New York Liberty stars to take their championship victory tour to the steps of the Met Museum for the first Monday in May - six months on from claiming the WNBA title. Jones commanded attention on the blue carpet of the Met Gala, where she was joined by many famous faces from the world of sport, including Angel Reese, Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts. The 2024 WNBA Finals MVP stepped onto the iconic steps in a leather-accented Sergio Hudson power suit. However, it was her hairstyle that proved to be the truly eye-catching aspect of her look. The Bahamian wore her braids up in a towering, gravity-defying twist upon her head. She complimented the sensational hairstyle with Jennifer Behr hair accessories with the colored gems and pearls catching the light. The 31-year-old, who is known for bringing her style to the arena, aced this year's Met Gala's dress code: 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.' Jones wowed in a custom double-breasted jacket in black croc-embossed leather, designed by Sergio Hudson, who has dressed the likes of Kamala Harris and Michelle Obama in the past. She finished off the look with a crisp white shirt, black tie and bootcut pants of the same color. Jones accessorized with a pair of circular blackout shades and a bejeweled broach on her lapel. Fans went wild for her look on social media with many claiming that Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft, 'crushed' it. 'She ateeeee,' one said, while another added: 'JJ, you pulled it off!' While a third claimed they 'love' the look, another raved: 'It's very Met Gala, so okay JJ!' 'Came in, showed the barber a picture of an exclamation point. Barber says, 'say no more, I got you,'' one social media user joked. Jones wasn't the only WNBA star to grace the carpet this year. She was joined by her Liberty teammates Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, as well as team co-owner Clara Wu Tsai to celebrate the annual spectacle of fashion. The Liberty champions coordinated in black and white outfits designed by Sergio Hudson. Stewart and Ionescu joined Jones in power suits. The former, who added a third WNBA championship to her resume last fall, sported an all-ivory look in a crisp tuxedo adding flair with a cape and wide-brimmed Monrowe hat. Meanwhile, Ionescu put a spin on the classic tailoring, pairing a black tailcoat tuxedo jacket over a white cream crop top and black floor-length skirt. Tsai opted for a simple, strapless black gown finished with a white lace trimming at the bottom. The Liberty begin their title defense on May 17 when they host the Las Vegas Aces - who they lost to in the 2023 Finals - at Barclays Center. They will return to preseason action this Friday when they take on the Connecticut Sun.
