FACT Review: The future of luxury travel awaits at Shebara Resort

FACT05-03-2025

Few places in the world push the boundaries of hospitality quite like Saudi Arabia's ambitious Red Sea project, and the newly-opened Shebara Resort is a prime example of its visionary ethos. This ultra-futuristic destination is where the natural world fuses with cutting-edge design. An ultra-luxe sanctuary for the elite traveller, bringing Maldives-like living to the Middle East.
Positioned on Shebara Island in the Al Wajh Lagoon, Shebara Resort offers an escape from the ordinary. The island retreat is accessible via private boat (approximately 35 minutes) or seaplane charter, immediately setting the tone for an exclusive experience. As you approach, the first thing that captures the eye is the architectural marvel of its structures, which appear to float, UFO-like, over the azure waters.
This balance between technology and nature is evident from the moment you step onto the island. A curated arrival experience ensures a seamless transition into a world that feels like it has leapt from the pages of a science fiction novel, with its undulating dunes and orb-shaped structures.
Shebara Resort has been created by Killa Design (the studio behind Dubai's Museum of the Future), and features sleek villas that seem to hover above the water. Connected by an intricate network of overwater walkways, it's like a string of pearls stretched out across the sea. The mirrored facades reflect the ever-changing hues of the sea and sky, creating an ethereal effect that shifts with the time of day. However, these reflective orbs are very difficult to keep clean due to the natural elements.
The resort includes 73 keys, which span beach and overwater villas. The accommodations designed by Studio Paolo Ferrari boast a minimalist yet opulent design, with a free-standing bathtub, a small kitchenette, and a bed that moulds into the very walls of the room. The interiors merge natural colours with modern aesthetics, complementing the floating bowl-shaped infinity pools and private terrace with panoramic views. Nets suspended just above the shallows ensure guests maintain a connection with the surrounding ocean.
Moreover, the resort integrates innovative technology at every turn. Doors glide open at the touch of a button, as does the rocket-shaped minibar stocked with Lyre's zero-alcohol products. The rainfall shower features various colours, jets and mists, while a Japanese toilet will make you feel like you're living in the future. Fronted by a futuristic polished metal design, it's all very Jetson space-age chic.
Perched on its own private island at the edge of Shebara, the ultra-exclusive Royal Villas Ensemble is a resort within a resort, featuring a dedicated yacht dock and four beachfront orbs that can accommodate up to 14 guests in complete seclusion.
The island offers a selection of five high-end restaurants that take inspiration from global culinary traditions while emphasising local, sustainably sourced ingredients. The flagship restaurant, Ariamare, by Michelin-lauded chef Marco Garfagnini, is your go-to for Mediterranean cuisine, where dishes take inspiration from the land and sea around it.
If you prefer Japanese cuisine, Iki.Roe should be on your restaurant reservations radar. This eatery, with its modern interiors featuring olive green and beige tones, allows you to watch the chefs craft super sushi in the open kitchen.
For those who want to sample a bit of everything, Lunara is the perfect place. With views that deserve a pinned post on Instagram, this beachfront restaurant offers a superb setting with its ceiling of studded wood and a bountiful breakfast offering that includes eggs with caviar and chilli crab with a kick.
Saria Pool Bar and Grill offers perfect poolside meals featuring grilled specialities, while the adults-only Solera serves a selection of non-alcoholic beverages and shisha alongside dishes curated from the Red Sea and its surrounding landscape.
Shebara's immersive activities are tailored to both thrill-seekers and those looking for serene indulgence. For adventure enthusiasts, the diving and snorkelling experiences are unparalleled. The surrounding coral reefs are some of the most pristine in the world, and guests can explore underwater ecosystems teeming with marine life.
On land, Shebara's wellness programs take a holistic approach, including bespoke treatments such as the Moonlight Meteorite Massage or Pearl and Green Caviar Signature Hammam. From rejuvenating spa therapies that blend ancient traditions with cutting-edge technology to a running track, padel courts and guided yoga sessions overlooking the horizon, every aspect of well-being is catered to.
Shebara Resort provides a glimpse into the future of travel. Every element, from its pioneering architecture and sterling service to its immersive recreation, has been meticulously designed to push the limits of luxury. The result is an escape that feels both exclusive and visionary. Of course, this level of exclusivity comes at a premium price point.
Shebara's dedication to sustainability is also noteworthy. The resort's reliance on solar energy and its commitment to minimising its environmental impact are a reminder that luxury and responsibility can coexist.
As Saudi Arabia continues to position itself as a global leader in luxury tourism, Shebara Resort stands as a testament to its commitment to redefining the travel experience. While projects like The Line and Trojena still feel distant, Sheabra Resort is tangible and apparent. While there are similar resorts in the vicinity, Shebara Resort is a futuristic masterpiece that's even more stunning in reality than the social media reels would have you believe.

Dubai Hills Business Park 4. Weekdays 12pm to 11pm, Weekends 12pm to 12am, @ The Lighthouse Further down on the scale of casual, The Lighthouse exudes the kind of warmth one would hope to find when discovering a new spot. At first glance, it's simple and incredibly inviting to passers-by who might be scouting for a spontaneous haunt. We say that because nothing about The Lighthouse is too much – too intense, too experimental, too fancy or too expensive. Nor is it too pale. It's just right for a weeknight when you don't want to be rudely surprised. The Lighthouse, across various locations, @thelighthouse_ae Wokyo Noodle Bar Nothing beats a hot, hearty and comforting bowl of ramen, and Wokyo Noodle Bar offers a noodle fix like no other. The noodle bar is known for its Sapporo-style ramen with a broth that is slow-cooked for 10 hours and poured over a wok sizzling with fresh vegetables and authentic ramen noodles. Other side dishes you need to try include chicken gyoza, homemade spring rolls and a tteokbokki that will leave you licking the bowl. The restaurant is also vegan-friendly, if that's how you roll. Wokyo, across various locations, @wokyo Uchi Uchi in DIFC is smaller then you'd expect – but it's also cosy, quiet and the perfect place for a casual date that's not too casual. Not only is the food delicious and wholesome, it's such a welcome break from the loud, large spaces that are a Dubai staple. A beautiful bar takes up much of the space in the middle and the service is welcoming and warm. DIFC comes off as too frilly, but this is one of the more easy-going spots where you can show up on the whim and find a good meal, guaranteed. Uchi, DIFC, Dubai, Sun to Wed, 12pm to 1am, Thurs to Fri, 12pm to 2am, Tel: (0) 4 298 5044, @ 3Fils 3Fils first opened in 2016 in Jumeirah Fishing Harbour, and quickly developed a loyal following, despite its petite size. It's an independently owned, unflashy, unlicensed, super-casual, no-reservations joint that also happens to serve delicious food. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, but all tables are served on a walk-in basis – so you won't be able to book ahead. This is for the uber casual – don't feel like cooking? Head over and find comfort staples. 3 Fils, Jumeirah Fishing Harbour, daily 12pm to 11.30pm, walk-in only. Tel: (0 4) 333 4003. Cafe Isan If your experience of Thai food has been limited to food colouring laced curry, tom yum instant ramen, or packets of sweet chilli crisps – you owe it to the land of smiles, to make a reparation trip to Cafe Isan. You can pick up deeply authentic, insanely aromatic versions of the Thai classics. But there's more. Trek deeper into the South-East Asian heartlands with Chef New's off-piste specials, fusion dishes, and less conventional concoctions. Level 1, Armada Avenue Hotel, Cluster P, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai. Sunday to Thursday 12pm to 12am, Friday and Saturday 12pm to 2am, Tel:(0) 58 5291003. 21 Grams 21 Grams is the kind of simple, unassuming eatery that you can go to for a sweet daytime date, maybe a lunch, but even dinner works. It's a small space, minimalistic, where one can pop down to get some work done, catch up with a friend or go on a spontaneous date. The no frills attached atmosphere feels more homely and with a fairly compact menu, you're set for fuss free dining. If you haven't tried Balkan food before, this bistro is a great way to get acquainted. 21 Grams, Meyan Mall, Umm Suqeim, Mon to Wed, 8am to 5pm, Thurs to Sun, 8am to 11pm, Tel: (0) 50 841 5021, @ Lila Molino There's a fair chance that if you're aware of Lila Taqueria, you're aware of Lila Molino. The latter is the former's much-larger and tastefully expansive younger sister, both helmed by the watchful, tender eye and many years of a love affair with Mexican food of Chef Shaw Lash. Lila Molino opened it's doors in a corner of Alserkal Avenue not that long ago – it's a cafe, it's a marketplace and above all, it's where you should go if you couldn't care less about fancies and frills. Lila Molino, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, Tues to Sun, 9am to 10pm, closed on Mon, Tel: (0) 4 388 5600, @lilamolino Reif Kushiyaki Founded by Chef Reif Othman, Reif Kushiyaki is an unconventional Japanese restaurant, devoted to the many different parts of the chicken – neck to tail. The two-storey adult-only playground features bowling, arcade games, pool tables, two outdoor terraces, and more. Brass Monkey, C2, City Walk, Dubai. Tel:(0)4 582 2244. @brassmonkeysocial Kokoro Kokoro, Dubai's first hand roll bar, is the newest Japanese offering at Alserkal Avenue, a small, almost hole-in-the-wall spot free of frills and fuss and full of the casual, inviting warmth one usually finds at a space like this. And fresh fish, of course. Every variety of it. Everything about Kokoro says laidback but not lazy, spontaneous but not overwhelming, so very cool but not alienating. Like that hipster barista you know who makes you feel like they woke up today to brew coffee for you and you only (and the 12 other people in the line behind you). Kokoro, Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, Sun to Wed, 12pm to 10.30pm, Thurs to Sat, 12pm to 11.30pm, @ Hoe Lee Kow If you're looking for a casual eatery to catch up with friends or enjoy quality food with your closest ones, unconventional Korean BBQ, Hoe Lee Kow is well worth a trip. Calling All Artists: Make The InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort Your Muse

How an artist's retreat allows nature's true beauty to surface at Intercontinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort When you fall in love with a destination, there is something special in then sharing that experience with someone else – as you get a chance to witness the magic through their eyes all over again. I've been fortunate to visit the Maldives many times, but never in the company of an artist. This is something InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort in Raa Atoll is exploring with its Artist in Residence series as a way to build strong cross-cultural connections with the Middle East, whilst inviting guests to explore the paradisiacal archipelago through the eyes of an artist. Recently, Dubai-based Lebanese artist Kristel Bechara spent a week on the island creating a painting inspired by the island's natural beauty, its wildlife and ongoing conservation efforts. Her piece, entitled The Silent Dance, captures the incredible magnetism of the Maldives' marine life as a chromatic Manta ray gliding through a monochrome ocean. Joining Kristel for art workshops and exclusive live art classes where we unleashed our own creative instincts on canvas, allowed an entirely new perception of the Maldives to take shape. While the islands are, by default, undeniably appealing, when you're looking to put pencil to paper you notice things on a more acute level. Not just the blue of the sea, but the exact moment one hue bleeds into the next; how each palm frond moves singularly in the breeze creating light and shadow play; how the sun alters the entire character of the island depending on where it sits in the sky. And through this, a new interpretation of the same place. An artist's impression where the Maldives is the muse. Naturally, a beautiful backdrop lends itself to artistic expression and InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort doubles down on agrarian allure. Five-star, yes, but much more raw and organic in its approach to luxury. The island is smaller than many, but all the better for it. Buggies are rendered almost obsolete, as bikes and walkways take you everywhere you'll need to go. Namely to the villas, that are either overwater or beachfront, all with private pools. Designed by Avalon Collective, the interiors looked to the 'musafir' (Arabic for traveller) for inspiration, with modern, open- plan interpretations of a nomadic free-spirit, where the space is left open, absent of internal walls to convey a true sense of freedom. Nature is all around: from the reef sharks that swim in the shallow waters and the kaleidoscopic house reef to the towering greenery that envelops the island. Climb The Lighthouse at dusk or dawn for the best views of the island. Make a night of it too at its restaurant, with grilled artichokes, local fish and seafood paella served over the sea. Or, grab a table by the water at Fish Market for dinner under the stars. Manta ray and dolphin-watching excursions should almost be mandatory they are so special. Nothing on earth beats seeing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat – silently dancing, wild and free.
