
Inter-Professional Games from July to Oct to add four new sports
KUCHING (June 16): More than 500 athletes from 11 professional bodies are expected to participate in the 10th Inter-Professional Games (IPG) to be held from July to October.
The number of sports for the bi-annual games has been increased from five to nine with pickleball, volleyball, basketball and e-sports as the new sports set to join futsal, golf, darts, tenpin bowling and badminton.
The darts competition will kick off the IPG on July 12 followed by tenpin bowling on July 20, pickleball on Aug 2, futsal on Aug 9, golf on Aug 17, badminton at on Sept 20-21 and ending with basketball in Oct with the date to be announced.
Participating bodies include Malaysian Institute of Accountants (Sarawak Regional Office), Advocates Association of Sarawak (Kuching Branch), Institut Kimia Malaysia, Institution of Engineers Malaysia (Sarawak Branch), Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (Sarawak Branch), Malaysian Medical Association (Sarawak Branch), Malaysian Institute of Planners (Sarawak Chapter), Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (Sarawak Chapter), Persatuan Farmasi Sarawak, Sarawak Institute of Agricultural Scientists and Sarawak Veterinary Association.
The main objectives of IPG are to strengthen camaraderie between members of the professional bodies and to foster a healthy lifestyle among participants.
IBG is hosted by UPC which was set up in Oct 1982 to provide a platform for the exchange of views and to foster closer rapport among the various professionals in Sarawak.
Meanwhile, Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) Sarawak branch are gunning for a fifth straight win in the golf competition after emerging champions in 2009, 2011, 2019 and 2023.
RISM golf captain John Cheu said they are confident of defending their title.
'We are not doing well in other games so golf is a important game for us to stay relevant in the IPC Games.
'RISM will be organising the golf competition with more than 80 members expected to join while other professional bodies will organise/co-organise one event each,' he added. 10th Inter-Professional Games

KUCHING (Aug 13): The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sarawak Branch futsal team once again proved their supremacy on the court by successfully defending their champion title in the Inter-Professional Games (IPG) 2025 futsal competition held at Arena Sukan here last Saturday. A press release from IEM Sarawak said the team, led by captain Razmi Mohammad Omar with Ir Justin Yii Huong Swee as the overall organising captain, displayed skill, teamwork and determination throughout the tournament. IEM opened their campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) before bouncing back in style to win all their remaining five matches. Their performance sealed the top spot, with PAM finishing second and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) in third place. Among those present to cheer the team on were IEM Sarawak chairwoman Ir Dr Angelia Liew, IEM Young Engineers Section (YES) director of student affairs Dr Tay Fei Siang and overall IPG 2025 chairperson Sr Laura Yiin. The IPG serves as a platform for professionals from various fields to come together, fostering camaraderie, teamwork and mutual respect while strengthening inter-professional relationships through friendly competition. Upcoming events in the IPG 2025 calendar include golf on Aug 17, bowling on Aug 24, and badminton from Sept 20–21.

Blind top scorer not discouraged by disability, wants to contribute to nation's education
KUALA LUMPUR: Blindness is not an obstacle to success for Nik Muhamad Ahnaf Rujhiee Raja Anuar, a blind student who studied at St John's Institution in the capital here and emerged as the top scorer in the 2024 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia for students with disabilities. "This was one of the challenges I faced in blending in a school with normal students. I had a culture shock at first. However, after a month, I found a way to adjust myself and was able to mingle with my schoolmates," he said. Ahnaf, a social science stream student, scored As in all his subjects with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0. "I revise, do exercises and if I don't understand something, I always ask my teachers. After a while, I can master the topic. Featured Videos "Alhamdullillah, my hard work has paid off," he told reporters after receiving the award at the 2024 STPM announcement ceremony in his former school. The top scorer said his next step is to enrol in the Teacher's Education Institute (IPG) to achieve his dream of contributing to shaping the nation's education. He also said that disabled persons should not give up due to their disabilities, as there was always a way to success via education. Ahnaf was inspired by his extended family members, who inspired him with their successes. "They always advise me to continue my studies. Thus, from there, I worked hard to achieve my dreams," he said.
