Tigers Reportedly Inquire About Former Gold Glove Third Baseman As Interest Grows
The Detroit Tigers boasted the best record in all of baseball entering Wednesday, and while they have gotten excellent play from Javier Baez and Zach McKinstry at the position this season, they have reportedly called the Pittsburgh Pirates about the availability of third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes, according to Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Hayes would be a defensive upgrade as he is one of the best defenders at the position in all of baseball.

Photo byThe Tigers have received good play with their tandem of Baez and McKinstry this season, but both players have played a considerable amount of time at other positions as needed. Hayes would slot in at third base full-time, and despite his below-average bat, he is playing an outstanding third base on the defensive side of the ball.
Hayes is also a player for the future with the Tigers, as McKinstry is a free agent after this season, while Hayes is under contract until 2029. Hayes has shown flashes of being a league-average hitter, and if he is able to stabilize his offensive side, his defense will make him all the more valuable.
Hayes has 11 Defensive Runs Saved along with 13 Outs Above Average, both the best marks at third base and top 10 of all defenders in baseball. Hayes was a Gold Glove winner in 2023, the first to win the National League Gold Glove at third base after Nolan Arenado's 10-year dominance of the award.
The Tigers are setting up to make a serious run at the World Series, and with the American League Central all but locked up, they are now turning their attention to strengthening their roster as the trade deadline approaches.
The Pirates currently sit in the cellar of the National League Central, and they are preparing to build for the future by selling off some of their expendable pieces this season.

Paul Skenes strikes out 8 as Pirates beat Reds 7-0
Paul Skenes struck out eight in six shutout innings, Bryan Reynolds and Henry Davis homered and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-0 on Thursday night. Skenes (7-8) allowed seven hits, the highest mark of his career, and remained undefeated against Cincinnati in four career starts. His record streak of allowing six or fewer hits to open an MLB career ended at 46 games. The longest such streak to begin a career (excluding openers), according to OptaStats, had belonged to Shohei Ohtani, who went 31 starts from 2018-21 for the Los Angeles Angels. Skenes extended his scoreless streak to 27 2/3 innings; he last allowed a run June 8 against Philadelphia. He lowered his ERA to a MLB-best 1.94. Reynolds opened the scoring with solo homer with two-out in the bottom of the first, and Jared Triolo drove in two more runs. In their last seven games, the Pirates have scored 18 runs in the first. Spencer Horwitz extended Pittsburgh's lead with an RBI single in the fourth. Two batters later, Reynolds' two-out single chased Cincinnati's Brady Singer (9-9), who allowed six hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings. Oneil Cruz added an RBI single in the sixth, and Davis hit a two-run shot in the seventh. Ke'Bryan Hayes went 1 for 3 in his return to Pittsburgh after a deadline trade sent him to Cincinnati. After Reynolds' homer in the first, Singer walked three straight batters, setting Jared Triolo up for a bases-loaded single that drove in two runs and put the Pirates ahead to stay. Skenes hasn't allowed an earned run in Pittsburgh since June 3, against Houston. He hasn't allowed an earned run against the Reds since June 17, 2024, in Cincinnati. Cincinnati RHP Chase Burns (0-3, 6.04) faces Pittsburgh RHP Mitch Keller (5-10, 3.89) in the second game of the four-game series.

Trump admin reverses course and grants some visas to Venezuelan teams to compete in Little League World Series
A pair of Venezuela Little League teams were able to score last-minute exceptions to play in Little League World Series tournaments in the U.S. despite the Trump administration's travel restrictions on the South American nation, which appeared to snare another Venezuelan team last month from competing. Those accepted include a Barquimesto, Venezuela, team from the Cardenales Little League, which will represent Latin America in the 2025 Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the league confirmed. 'Our children's dream is going to come true soon,' the team wrote in Spanish on Instagram on Friday. 'Williamsport here we come.' Another team, from the city of Valencia, secured permission to play in an older age division in the Little League Intermediate Tournament in Livermore, California. 'We are grateful for all those who supported these players throughout this process, including the U.S. Department of State,' Little League International told The Independent in a statement. Venezuela is among the nations named in the Trump administration's June proclamation restricting and in some cases banning travel from certain nations the White House says fall short of vetting standards or have high rates of visa overstays. While the policy contains an exception for athletes playing in major international tournaments like the World Cup or Olympics, it reportedly took the intervention of top federal officials to get the Venezuelan teams to the U.S. tournaments. Trump ally Senator David McCormick of Pennsylvania reportedly helped convince the administration to grant the Little Leaguers exceptions, a decision that ultimately required personal sign-off from Secretary of State Marco Rubio. 'I am thrilled my team and I were able to play a small role in making sure young athletes are able to chase their dreams and participate in this timeless Pennsylvania tradition,' McCormick said in a statement to The Athletic. The Independent has contacted the State Department and the U.S. embassy in Bogotá, Colombia, which handles consular issues relating to Venezuela, for comment. A third Venezuelan team, which qualified for the Senior League World Series, announced in July it had been unable to secure its visas. 'The players are demoralized,' Cacique Mara wrote in a statement in Spanish on social media at the time. 'The only thing that they know is baseball. They want to go to compete and put the name Venezuela and Latin American on high. They don't represent any threat, they are 15-year-olds that want to win the world series.' The team shared that its denial may have been related to a provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act related to preventing the entry of terrorists and national security threats. The White House claims the Venezuelan government is in league with the Tren de Aragua gang, which it considers a hostile foreign entity invading the country, justifying emergency restrictions like the use of the Alien Enemies Act, even though U.S. intelligence agencies reportedly disagree. The visa issues come as the U.S. is set to see a major influx of foreign athletic teams seeking entry to the country to play in the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Former Manager of the Year Named Option for Yankees to Replace Aaron Boone
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees entered Thursday in third place in the American League East and with a 1 1/2 game lead for the final AL Wild Card spot. At this point, it's hard to believe the Yankees once had the top spot in the division and were in a position to run away with it. Their recent woes have led some fans to call for Aaron Boone to be fired. While MLB insider Jon Heyman notes that the Yankees will not fire him, FanSided's Christopher Kline named former Miami Marlin manager Skip Schumaker as a potential replacement for Boone. "The Miami Marlins and Skip Schumaker parted ways after only two seasons together," wrote Kline. "He led them to 84 wins and a surprise postseason berth in 2023. Then Miami undercut the front office with Kim Ng's firing and the team fell apart. It's rather difficult to pinpoint exact managerial tendencies in today's game, but Schumaker has proven that he can rally a group of underdogs to outperform expectations. Just imagine what he might do with a team of high-paid stars and the Yankees logo across his chest." MIAMI, FLORIDA - AUGUST 02: New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone looks on during batting practice prior to a game against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot park on August 02, 2025 in Miami, was the 2023 National League Manager of the Year. He is also a former player who spent 11 seasons playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds. He won a World Series with the Cardinals in 2011. His career record is 146-178 as a manager, but the Marlins were not exactly in a position to be contenders when he took over. Regardless, he managed to lead them to the postseason. With the aggressive nature of the Yankees' front office, he could find success. Boone's current contract runs through 2027. There are no indications that a change is coming, but if the Yankees miss the postseason, conversations about Boone being fired will get louder.
