George Clooney voices hope for America's future

Los Angeles, Apr 24 (UNI) Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney remains confident that the United States will weather its political storms, expressing optimism during candid conversation with Broadway legend Patti LuPone for Variety's 'Actors on Actors' series.
Clooney, known as much for his activism as for his acting, offered a reassuring take on the country's political trajectory. Reflecting on the enduring presence of former President Donald Trump, Clooney characterised him 'It is funny because he is just a New York beast and we've all known him for 30 years when he was just a guy chasing women,' Clooney said. 'It's fine. We're going to get through it.'
While Clooney's hopefulness permeated the conversation, LuPone expressed a far more sobering viewpoint, aligning herself with the segment of the public mired in political fatigue. 'I feel like we'll all be fine, we're going to get through it,' Clooney said. 'We do eventually find our better angels, we have every other time and I think we will again. I'm an optimist about all of that.' 'I'm so glad you are,' Lupone said after a heavy sigh. 'That gives me hope', according to a report by CNN.
Clooney, who is currently starring in the Broadway production of 'Good Night and Good Luck,' added that he also thinks Democrats will win back the majority in the House of Representatives in the midterm election.
A longtime Democrat, Clooney said he hopes new leadership emerges in the party. 'We have to find some people to represent us better who have a sense of humour. Who have a sense of purpose,' he said, adding that one person he believes in is Maryland Governor Wes Moore. 'I think he's going to a real force in the next election.'

Trump snubs reports of 'major defeat' after talks with Putin

Synopsis President Trump refuted claims of defeat at the Alaska Summit with Putin, asserting the U.S. was Putin's least desired location. He criticized Democrats, alleging they encourage crime in their cities, while vowing to secure them. ANI Trump snubs reports of "major defeat" after talks with Putin US President Donald Trump on Sunday dismissed claims that he has suffered a 'defeat' at the hands of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the August 15 Summit in Alaska. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, "The Fake News has been saying for 3 days that I suffered a "major defeat" by allowing President Vladimir Putin of Russia to have a major Summit in the United States. Actually, he would have loved doing the meeting anywhere else but the U.S., and the Fake News knows this. It was a major point of contention! If we had the Summit elsewhere, the Democrat run and controlled media would have said what a terrible thing THAT was."Trump also criticised Democrats, claiming they "want crime" in the cities under their control. "These people are sick! They even want CRIME IN D.C., and other BLUE Cities throughout our Country, but don't worry, I won't let that happen. Just like our now secure Southern Border (ZERO illegals in last 3 months!), our cities will be Secure and Safe, and D.C. will lead the way!" he added. Earlier on Friday, the United States and Russia concluded the much-anticipated Alaska Summit meeting aimed at bringing peace to the conflict in Ukraine. In a post on Truth Social, the US President called it a "great and very successful day in Alaska" and highlighted that the best way to go forward would be through a "peace agreement". Later, Trump described the meeting with Russian President Putin as "really well", and said he held a telephonic conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, several European leaders, and NATO Secretary General, during which it was agreed that a peace agreement is the best way to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. "A great and very successful day in Alaska! The meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia went very well, as did a late-night phone call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, and various European Leaders, including the highly respected Secretary General of NATO. It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up," the US President had posted on Truth Social.

'Forget Nato, Crimea': Is Trump throwing Zelenskyy under the bus for Russia deal?

Ahead of his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House, US President Donald Trump on Monday ruled out the possibility of Kyiv reclaiming Crimea from Moscow and urged his counterpart not to pursue Nato membership — a key sticking point with Trump's remarks came even after his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, told CNN that Moscow was willing to let the US and its European allies provide Nato-style security guarantees to Kyiv as part of a potential peace deal, describing the development as "game-changing."advertisement"We were able to win the following concession: That the United States could offer Article 5-like protection, which is one of the real reasons why Ukraine wants to be in NATO," Trump's main negotiator, Steve Witkoff, who held hectic parleys in Moscow ahead of the recently concluded Alaska meeting with Vladimir Putin, told CNN Calling it a major breakthrough, Witkoff added that this was the first time Moscow had agreed to such a 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, also known as the Washington Treaty, is the basis of Nato's principle of collective defence. It states that an armed attack against any of the alliance's 32 members in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them allTrump further suggested that the decision to end the conflict lies with Zelenskyy, remarking that he 'can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight.'Blaming former US President Barack Obama for allowing Russia's annexation of Crimea 'without a shot being fired' in 2014, Trump reiterated his stance on Truth Social, saying, "President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!"- Ends

Zelenskyy Hails 'Historic' US Offer Of Security Guarantees For Ukraine Ahead Of Meeting Trump

Zelenskyy said the US offer for NATO-style security guarantees to Ukraine was a significant step toward a potential peace agreement to end the ongoing conflict with Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday praised the United States' decision to provide NATO-style security guarantees to Ukraine, calling it a significant step toward a potential peace agreement to end the ongoing conflict with Russia. Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff said the Russian side had agreed to the US offers of NATO-like protection to Ukraine, which would be in lieu of Ukraine seeking NATO membership. He said it was 'the first time we had ever heard the Russians agree to that." 'We agreed to robust security guarantees that I would describe as game-changing," Witkoff told CNN's 'State of the Union', describing the security guarantee as an 'Article 5" type protection against further Russian invasion. Article 5 of NATO's founding treaty states that an attack on any member is considered an attack on all. In a statement, Zelenskyy said, 'This is a historic decision that the United States is ready to take part in security guarantees for Ukraine. Security guarantees, as a result of our joint work, must really be very practical, delivering protection on land, in the air, and at sea, and must be developed with Europe's participation." His remarks came after a video conference earlier on Sunday with a group of Ukraine's allies in Europe, including the leaders of Britain, France, and Germany. 'There is clear support for Ukraine's independence and sovereignty. Everyone agrees that borders must not be changed by force. Everyone supports that key issues must be resolved with Ukraine's participation in a trilateral format – Ukraine, the US, and the Russian chief," Zelenskyy said. Several leaders have hinted that Ukraine may have to recognise territorial losses as part of a peace deal with Russia. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said both Russia and Ukraine would need to make concessions to reach a peace deal, saying security guarantees for Kyiv would be discussed on Monday. Trump Rules Out Ukraine's NATO Entry Ahead of a meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy in Washington on Monday, the US President called on the latter to agree to a peace deal, while ruling out Ukraine's entry into NATO. 'President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!" Trump said on Truth Social. Trump had pressed Ukraine to agree to a peace deal after his meeting with Putin in Alaska because 'Russia is a very big power, and they're not." He is pushing for a direct peace agreement instead of an immediate ceasefire. view comments First Published: August 18, 2025, 07:40 IST News world Zelenskyy Hails 'Historic' US Offer Of Security Guarantees For Ukraine Ahead Of Meeting Trump Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
