Felcra posts RM178mil profit, distributes RM101mil to participants

The Suna day ago
PASIR SALAK: Felcra Bhd has announced a profit of RM178 million for the period up to April 2025, marking an increase from the previous year.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that RM101 million will be distributed to 74,300 participants across the country in stages.
'I commend Felcra Bhd for sustaining strong performance, with a nearly RM2 million rise compared to last year,' he said during the 2025 First Interim Distributable Profit Declaration ceremony.
The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang and Felcra Bhd CEO Datuk Idris Lasim.
Ahmad Zahid highlighted Felcra's role in national food security through its MRQ 107 paddy, a local fragrant rice variety.
He noted that Seberang Perak's 3,400-hectare paddy fields, managed with modern techniques, yield an average of eight metric tonnes per hectare annually.
'We anticipate over 27,000 metric tonnes of paddy, translating to 16,000 metric tonnes of rice yearly, benefiting thousands of families,' he added.
Idris attributed the strong interim distribution performance to efficient estate management and cost-saving initiatives.
'Optimised fertiliser and pesticide use reduced operational costs by 15 per cent while increasing yield per hectare by 49 per cent,' he explained.
Felcra's oil palm projects also saw an 81 per cent rise in net profit, he noted.
He stressed that while crude palm oil prices impact profit distribution, estate performance improvements remain the key driver. - Bernama

SDS to ride on bread boom with Mamee Bakery acquisition: Publicinvest

KUALA LUMPUR: SDS Group Bhd's acquisition of Mamee Bakery Sdn Bhd's assets in Johor is being viewed as a strategic bet on Malaysia's fast-growing bread and bakery market, which is expected to hit US$8.2 billion in 2025. Public Investment Bank (PublicInvest) said the RM28 million deal not only strengthens SDS's manufacturing base but also positions the group to capture rising demand for convenience-driven food products. According to Statista, the domestic bread and bakery market is projected to expand at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6 per cent between 2025 and 2030, supported by shifting dietary trends, health awareness and the convenience of bread as a carbohydrate alternative. SDS' indirect subsidiary, SDS Top Baker Sdn Bhd, will acquire seven parcels of land and factories in Plentong, Johor Bahru, for RM26 million. The group will also purchase production lines, machinery, equipment, trademarks, recipes and proprietary know-how tied to Mamee Bakery's operations for RM2 million. The assets cover full production lines for popular products such as London/Tora Swiss Roll, layer cakes and bear cakes, alongside Mamee's bakery-related intellectual property and goodwill. PublicInvest noted that SDS' strong net cash position of around RM27 million ensures funding is not a concern. SDS, already a key manufacturer and distributor of bakery goods with two plants in Kempas, Johor, and Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, remains largely under the control of the Tan family. The company's two biggest shareholders, Tan Kim Seng and Tan Kim Chai, hold stakes of 24.3 per cent and 24.2 per cent, respectively. In a stock exchange filing last week, SDS said that the acquisition aligns with its long-term strategy to scale operations, expand into new product segments and enhance export potential. The group targets the mass market under its wholesale brands Top Baker and Daily's, distributing across Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore via its own logistics network. Top Baker products are typically sold in sundry shops and groceries, while Daily's products are available in hypermarkets, supermarkets and convenience stores. PublicInvest said the acquisition will complement SDS' existing distribution strengths, broaden its product portfolio and unlock synergies through resource sharing and greater operational efficiency. "We believe that it will generate synergies by broadening SDS' product portfolio while enhancing operational scalability under the same distribution network," PublicInvest said, maintaining an Outperform rating on the stock with an unchanged target price of 88 sen, based on 12x CY26F EPS. The research house added that the proximity of SDS' Kempas and Plentong facilities could drive further cost optimisation while boosting manufacturing capacity. This also aligns with the group's strategy to grow export sales through products with longer shelf lives.

‘Preserve harmony in govt'

Staple food: Ahmad Zahid (second from right) taking a closer look at the MRQ 107 padi. With him are Rubiah (centre) and Idris (right). — Bernama PASIR SALAK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has advised all political leaders to distinguish between legal and political matters to preserve harmony within the government. Action must be taken in cases of legal violations, while political disputes should be resolved through proper channels, he said. 'We do not want any incident to force a political decision to be made, as this could disrupt the unity among the 18 parties in the Madani government. In my view, we must separate legal matters from political matters,' he said yesterday after officiating 'Program Santunan Desa' organised by the Community Development Department (Kemas) in Perak. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman and Umno president, urged all quarters to respect party decisions to maintain tolerance among component parties. 'Do not sensationalise an issue or try to become the most popular figure, only to end up damaging good relations between party leaders and at the grassroots level,' he added, Bernama reported. At another event, he said Felcra Bhd had continued to make history in strengthening national food security through the commercialisation of Felcra's MRQ 107 padi – a local fragrant rice variety that serves as a high-quality alternative to imported fragrant rice. Ahmad Zahid said the Seberang Perak area, covering more than 3,400ha and cultivated using modern methods by Felcra, has shown encouraging performance with an average yield reaching eight metric tonnes per hectare annually. 'We expect production to exceed 27,000 metric tonnes of padi, equivalent to over 16,000 metric tonnes of rice per year, which can meet the needs of thousands of families. Hopefully, this becomes an example for other padi farmers,' he said at the 2025 First Interim Distributable Profit Declaration Ceremony for Felcra Bhd participant projects here yesterday. Also present were Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang and Felcra Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Idris Lasim. Ahmad Zahid said Felcra Bhd recorded a profit of RM178mil between Jan to April 2025, an increase compared to the previous year. Of this amount, RM101mil will be distributed to 74,300 participants nationwide in stages. 'I congratulate Felcra Bhd for successfully maintaining a strong performance, with an increase of nearly RM2mil compared to the same period last year. I will be monitoring the profit distribution to all participants across the country,' he said. Idris said the strong performance of the first interim distribution for 2025 was due to several key factors, including efficient estate management and the implementation of cost-saving measures. 'Through effective approaches in the use of fertilisers, pesticides and farm inputs, operational costs were reduced by 15% and yield per hectare increased by 49%,' he said. Idris also said Felcra's palm oil projects recorded an average net profit increase of 81%. While profit distribution rates are influenced by crude palm oil price trends, he said improvements in estate performance remain the primary determining factor.

Small ‘delivery fee' leads to big loss

PETALING JAYA: It is almost becoming part and parcel of stories about the risks of online shopping. Delivery and courier companies are cautioning online shoppers of scam tactics. Some of these scams even involve victims being tricked into divulging their personal details. The phishing tactic would see scammers randomly send out messages to recipients, claiming a delivery is pending and buyers need only click on a given link for more details of their parcel. Often, the scammers would request for a minimal 'delivery fee' of a few ringgit from their victims just so they could secretly record the smartphone activities including their online banking details such as the login name and password. In a recent case, a woman lost about RM2,350 after she was tricked into making a RM1.75 'delivery fee' payment for a parcel she never received. Ninja Van Malaysia chief sales officer Fariz Maswan said the company recorded over 17,000 scam-related cases last year with 40% of it occurring in the Klang Valley alone. 'We already have more than 3,500 reports in the first three months this year,' said Fariz in a statement to The Star. He said scammers had sent out messages under his company's name to hoodwink victims into paying for parcels they never ordered. 'Some victims received parcels they never ordered and were pressured to pay under Cash on Delivery (COD) terms. 'Others get fake delivery messages of what we call 'ghost scams',' he said. 'We are actively educating the public through our social media channels, sharing scam alerts and tips on how to spot red flags in such deceptions. 'We are also working with the government and we hope to stay ahead of the scammers. 'This will help Malaysians shop online with more confidence,' Fariz said. Pos Malaysia's chief operations officer Zaini Yahman said similar complaints of such fake calls and messages were also received by the company's clients. 'These fraudulent messages ask the recipients to update personal details such as addresses and banking information by clicking on malicious links or downloading APK files,' said Zaini. He cited a case last year where a customer's mobile number was compromised when she received a short message service (SMS) claiming her parcel could not be delivered. 'The message included a link to change the delivery date but it did not mention any specific shipment details. 'The customer was redirected to a page where a fee of RM1.37 was requested for a re-delivery. 'Unfortunately, when she proceeded to pay the fee, a charge of RM2,334.58 was imposed and the funds were siphoned from her account. It turned out to be a phishing link. 'When victims provide the information the scammers seek, their accounts are hacked into and lead to unauthorised cash withdrawals,' he said. Malaysian eHailing Association chief activist Jose Rizal said another scamming trend that has been identified is when scammers attempt to access personal accounts, posing as delivery riders and request for the one-time passwords (OTPs) under the guise of verifying deliveries. 'Victims are told they have a pending delivery and in order to receive their parcel, they would need to click on a given link and pay a fee for 'Customs Department taxes' or 'delivery charges',' said Jose. 'We have urged delivery companies to further enhance the identification of their delivery riders and provide proper digital proof to prevent customers from falling victim to such scams involving the delivery of parcels,' said Jose.
