Odisha gets seawater desalination plant
Around 4 lakh litres of water will be supplied from the plant every day, benefiting around 7,000 people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unveiled the plant in March last year from Bhubaneswar.
Pradhan said with the operationalisation of the plant, the water problems of two seashore villages will be solved. "The villagers were facing drinking water problems due to the salinity in the groundwater," he said.
A total of Rs 135 crore was invested to set up the 4.5-mld plant to meet the industrial and potable drinking water requirements, OSCOM chief CVR Murty said.
Water will also be provided to OSCOM employees, along with the nearby villages, he said.
"While OSCOM will utilise 1.5 mld water from the plant, it will supply 1.5 mld to villages. Another 1.5 mld will be kept as reserve for utilisation during an emergency," he added.
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has provided the technology for desalination of the seawater, and the Centre's Atomic Energy Department has provided the funds, officials said.
The district administration constructed the overhead tanks and laid pipes to every household.
Berhampur MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy urged the IREL to set up another such plant to serve more areas, including Chhatrapur town.
At present, water is supplied to OSCOM, Berhampur University and Chhatrapur town from the Rushikulya river. During peak summer, these areas reel under a water crisis as the supply gets reduced.

Ongole: Police authorities obstructed a farmers' demonstration organised by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and Trade Unions Joint Forum here on Wednesday, citing restrictions under Section 30 of the Police Act. Rangarao said that the farmers of the country are now calling for the 'Quit Corporate' against the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi against the farmers, and to present the agriculture in the country to the corporate companies. AP Rythu Sangham district secretary Pamidi Venkatrao questioned why the central government could waive Rs 16 lakh crore in corporate loans but refused to waive farmers' debts. He warned that attempts to suppress movements would lead to the same fate as previous governments. CPM district secretary Sk Mabu alleged the government was implementing agricultural laws through backdoor methods, specifically criticising the allocation of 8348 acres of valuable farmland to Indosol company. Other speakers, including Hanuma Reddy, Chittipati Venkateswarlu, and Sk Saida, condemned the government's double standards, pointing out that ruling party events don't require Section 30 clearance. Other leaders warned that suppressing public concerns through force would inevitably lead to public backlash against the government.

Nationwide ‘Har Ghar Tiranga' celebrations gaining momentum, says BJP
Hyderabad: Telangana BJP state unit, in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call, the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' program is being celebrated across India with patriotic fervor to mark the 79th Independence Day. The initiative, aimed at fostering national unity and pride, is being organized in a coordinated manner by the Government of India and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including extensive participation in Telangana. Addressing the media on Wednesday, party state vice-president Gangidi Manohar Reddy highlighted the scale and spirit of the celebrations. Referring to recent national security developments, Reddy praised the swift response of the Indian Army in Pahalgam, where terrorists were neutralized following an attack on civilians. He said the successful completion of Operation Sindhur has further galvanized public sentiment and strengthened patriotic resolve. In Telangana, the BJP has set a target of hoisting the national flag on 40 lakh homes. Reddy urged citizens to participate actively in the campaign and join the Tiranga Rally scheduled at Necklace Road on August 14 at 10 a.m. The rally will be led by BJP Telangana State President Ramchandra Rao, Legislative Council members AVN Reddy and Malka Komuraiah, along with party leaders, activists, students, and college representatives. Govt to felicitate SSC & Inter toppers during I-Day celebrations
Hyderabad: As part of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, the State Project Director of Samagra Shiksha, Telangana, Dr. E. Naveen Nicolas, has issued directives to all District Educational Officers (DEOs) to organize district-level events involving government school children. The initiative aims to foster a patriotic spirit and recognize academic excellence among students. The celebrations will feature cultural programs, NCC and Scouts drills, and the ceremonial felicitation of top-performing students from the SSC and Intermediate Examinations – 2025. Each district will identify two boys and two girls from SSC, and two boys and two girls from the Intermediate level, studying in government institutions under the Directorate of School Education (DSE). These eight students per district will be felicitated with a cash award of Rs 10,000 each, along with certificates issued by the Head Office. To support these activities, instructions were issued to to release Rs 36.30 lakh to the SNA accounts of 33 District Project Offices (DPOs). Each district will receive Rs 1.10 lakh — Rs 30,000 for organizing cultural programs and NCC/Scouts participation, and Rs 80,000 for student felicitation. The cultural segment will include patriotic songs, dances, and skits that reflect national pride and unity. NCC and Scouts cadets will present drills and parades as part of the ceremonial proceedings. The funds allocated will cover expenses such as snacks, transportation, costumes, stage arrangements, and other incidental costs. Certificates for the toppers will be printed and presented in a dignified manner during the Independence Day event.
