MUSCAT: An International Medical Conference on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) was held in Muscat on July 26, bringing together leading experts and practitioners in the field of neurology and neurosurgery.
The event was jointly organised by the Muscat Family Physicians Group, in association with the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Research Centre, Yashoda Hospital, Hitech City, Hyderabad, India, and Global Treatment Services and held at the Intercity Hotel, Al Khuwair.
The conference focused on the theme: 'The Role of Deep Brain Stimulation in Alleviating Symptoms of Movement Disorders, Especially Parkinson's Disease and Dystonia'. These conditions continue to place a heavy burden on patients and their families, and the conference aimed to shed light on cutting-edge therapeutic approaches.
Dr Rukmini, Senior Consultant – Neurology, provided an overview of DBS and discussed its various indications.
Prof Dr Rupam, Senior Consultant – Neurology, shared valuable insights into the long-term benefits of DBS in improving the quality of life for Parkinson's patients and their caregivers. Dr Rajesh, Senior Consultant – Neurosurgery, emphasised the remarkable improvement in symptoms of dystonia through DBS.
The distinguished team from Yashoda Hospital, with over 25 years of experience and more than 1,000 DBS procedures performed, also highlighted their contribution to international training and fellowships.
The scientific presentations were followed by an engaging and interactive session involving leading neurologists, neurosurgeons, internists, family physicians, ER specialists, physiotherapists, and practitioners of alternative medicine such as homeopathy and Ayurveda.
Recent advances in treatment, emerging therapeutic modalities, and future prospects were thoroughly discussed.
More than 50 prominent medical professionals attended the conference, reflecting the growing interest in advanced neuromodulation therapies within Oman.
Dr Sanjay Dalal, the event organiser, extended his heartfelt thanks to the visiting team from Yashoda Hospital for sharing their vast clinical experience.

A state-of-the-art facility launched by Aster Al Raffah Hospitals & Clinics, set to revolutionize advanced neuro-rehabilitation in Oman, GCC & the African countries. Muscat – Aster Al Raffah Hospitals & Clinics, a leading integrated healthcare provider under Aster DM Healthcare in the GCC, has officially launched the Aster Al Raffah Walk Again Advanced Robotic Rehabilitation Centre. Located in Ghubra, Muscat, this first-of-its-kind facility in the Sultanate marks a significant milestone in healthcare innovation, poised to transform neuro-rehabilitation across the region. Aster Al Raffah Walk Again is Oman's one of the first private hospital to introduce a specialised robotic rehabilitation facility. Other cutting-edge technologies include the Recoverix Pro system, which uses Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) for stroke and multiple sclerosis rehabilitation, and Vibramoov, a vibration therapy system that enhances gait and mobility. Additional innovations such as Luna EMG, a neurorehabilitation system, and Meissa OT, a robotic upper limb rehabilitation device, ensure comprehensive recovery for patients with varied needs. The centre also offers advanced neuromodulation treatments, including Deep Brain Stimulation for movement disorders and Vagus Nerve Stimulation for treatment-resistant epilepsy. These technologies, along with Functional Electrical Stimulation, enhance muscle strength and coordination, supporting patients in regaining independence. MUSCAT: Muscat Family Physicians' Group and Global treatment Services, organised an International Medical Conference on 'Pre and Post-operative care of Liver Transplant recipient and the donor' on Tuesday, at Intercity Hotel, Muscat. Dr Noorien Head Organ Transplant, Dr Badariya HB and pancreatic surgeon, Dr Sulaiman al Maamari HB Surgeon, Dr Ahmed al Busaidy HB Surgeon were Guests of Honour. The topic and timing of the CME was contemporary, since liver transplant activity in the Sultanate of Oman has picked up in recent months. Doctors from the Royal Hospital and the Military Hospital, which are front runners in liver transplant, attended the scientific session. The keynote speaker was Dr Dharmesh Kapoor, Consultant Physician — liver transplant from Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad, India. He elaborated the critical care required for both recipient and the donor of Liver transplant in both Pre and Post-operative period and how this care affects the outcome. There was a clinical interaction between the speaker, Guests of Honour and other participating doctors. There was a thoughtful discussion with policy makers, as to how one could take the transplant activity to the next level in Oman. Ways and means to enhance deceased donation in the Sultanate of Oman were also discussed. The meeting concluded with the Yashoda group ensuring unflinching support to liver transplant activity in the Sultanate of Oman, in every possible way. The meeting was attended by over 50 practicing doctors of Muscat Oman which included HB surgeons, Hepatologist, Gastroenterologist , Gen Surgeons , Paed Surgeons, Anesthetists, Internists, A&E specialists and Family Physicians.
