CBSE to begin Class 10, 12 practical exams for compartment students from July 10; check details here

Time of India03-07-2025
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued detailed guidelines for conducting practical examinations for Class 10 and 12 compartment candidates. These practical exams will be held alongside the Supplementary Examinations 2025 and are scheduled between July 10 and July 15.
This special round of practical exams applies only to students placed in specific categories as per their main exam results. CBSE has laid out clear instructions regarding eligibility, venues, and the evaluation process.
Who needs to appear for the CBSE practical exams
?
For Class 12 students:
Candidates marked under the 'Repeat in Practical' (RP) category are required to take the practical exam only. Their theory marks from the main board exams will remain unchanged and will be carried forward to their final result.
For Class 10 students:
Those falling under the 'Repeat in Theory and Practical Both' (RB) category must appear for both theory and practical exams during this supplementary session.
Additionally, if any student was marked absent for internal assessment during the main board exams, they will be awarded pro-rata internal marks based on their performance in the theory paper of the supplementary exam. It is important to note that no new internal assessment will be conducted for such candidates.
Where will the CBSE practical exams be conducted
?
The venue of the practical exams will depend on the nature of the candidate:
• For regular students, practical exams will be conducted at their own schools, following standard procedures.
• For private candidates, the practicals will be held at the centres designated for their theory examinations. In cases where these centres do not have the necessary facilities to conduct practical exams, the respective CBSE Regional Office will assign an alternative venue.
Practical exam marks to be uploaded on the same day
CBSE has mandated that all marks awarded during the practical exams must be uploaded to the Board's portal on the same day the exam is conducted. Once entered, these marks will be considered final and cannot be altered and no requests for corrections or changes will be entertained.
Important:
To ensure a smooth process, students must report to their schools or allotted centres by July 7, carrying a printed copy of their result and admit card. The schools will notify students about the exact date and time of their practical exams and all students are expected to follow this schedule strictly.

Attention students: CBSE to allow Class 9 students to use books for writing exam answers, plan is to...

CBSE students- File image New Delhi: In a significant development for CBSE students all across the country, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that it will introduce open book assessments (OBAs) for Class 9 students from the 2026-27 academic session. Here are all the details you need to know about the open book assessment and how CBSE will conduct it. According to the minutes the governing body's meeting in June, the NCFSE 2023 'underscores the need to transition from rote memorisation to competency-based learning, with OBAs serving as a catalyst for this shift.' What is open book assessment? As a part of the Open book assessment, students are given questions where they they can take help of books in writing their answers. The board hopes that this initiative will reduce exam stress and strengthen conceptual understanding. How will CBSE implement open book assessments? The strategy, approved by the curriculum committee and ratified by the governing body, proposes that OBAs be part of the three pen-paper tests conducted each term in languages, mathematics, science and social science. The decision draws on a pilot study that avoided additional reading materials and tested cross-cutting themes from the curriculum. Student scores ranged from 12 per cent to 47 per cent, revealing 'challenges in effectively utilising resources and grasping interdisciplinary concepts.' Despite this, the minutes note that 'teachers expressed optimism about OBAs, noting their potential to foster critical thinking.' How will CBSE conduct Open Book exam? To ensure quality, CBSE will develop standardised sample papers and provide structured guidance to help students navigate reference materials and apply knowledge contextually. The board expects the initiative to reduce exam stress, encourage real-world application of knowledge, and strengthen conceptual understanding. (With inputs from agencies)

80% of third phase UGD project in Tirunelveli likely to be completed by December 31

The Corporation has set itself a target of completing 80% of third phase of its ongoing underground drainage (UGD) project in Palayamkottai and Melapalayam Zones by December end, the Superintending Engineer Kannan has said. Responding to a question from M. Francis, chairman of Palayamkottai Zone, Mr. Kannan said 44% of the third phase of the underground drainage work being implemented in the wards in Palayamkottai and Melapalayam Zones had been completed. As of now, the underground drainage work was being completed at the rate of 1.30 km daily and the roads damaged in the process were repaired after the drainage pipes were laid. 'Hence, we are hopeful of completing 80% of this work by December 31,' Mr. Kannan informed the councillors. He said 8 or 9 blocks in the underground drainage system were being removed every day. Water scheme On the progress of the Ariyanayagipuram Drinking Water Scheme, he said the TWAD Board implementing this project had given more than 24,000 drinking water connections to the houses against the target of 33,000 connections. He said the Corporation, in the past five years, had taken up 1,763 roadworks and completed more than 1,000 works by laying roads for 326 km at the cost of ₹173 crore. Pavulraj, representing Ward No. 6, said the cement roads laid earlier in some parts of his ward could not be milled for laying the bitumen over it, which had resulted in significant increase in the height of the road to leave pits around the underground drainage manhole. 'Since this uneven surface often causes accidents, the officials should find effective solution for this serious issue,' he said. When Mr. Pavulraj complained about frequent fires in the dumpyard at Ramaiyanpatti during summer, Mayor G. Ramakrishnan said the waste dumped on 135 acres would be compacted to 60 acres after compartmentalising the garbage in smaller areas for preventing the rapid spread of the fire and facilitating fire fighting. Show of support Expressing solidarity with the protesting sanitation workers of Greater Chennai Corporation, Mr. Pavulraj turned up in sanitation worker's uniform while carrying placards demanding regularisation of their service instead of outsourcing the sanitation operations. As Mr. Ramakrishnan completed one year in office after his predecessor P.M. Saravanan had to step down following a revolt by councillors, he thanked the members for having reposed faith in him.
