Shelbourne v Rijeka – Drama in Tolka as Croatians strike late to march on

Live |
Shelbourne take on Croatian side HNK Rijeka in their Europa League third qualifying round second leg tie at Tolka Park this evening.
Leading 2-1 from last week's first leg, the League of Ireland Premier Division champions are just a draw away from an estimated €3.4million in Uefa prizemoney and further riches with a guaranteed place in the league phase of the Conference League.

There will probably be an extra minute added on for some gamesmanship from the visitors.

A final roll of the dice sees Daniel Kelly replace the weary Kerr McInroy. Rijeka have tried to kill the clock with some bodies down with cramp.

GOAL! Tolka Park is stunned into silence. It's heartbreaking for Joey O'Brien's side. Merveil Ndockyt's free-kick falls to Niko Jankovic. He squeezed it back to Ante Orec who drills it into the far corner of Wessel Speel's goal. That could be the winner.
We will have 5 minutes of injury time to play!

SAVE! Suddenly, it's Shels on the front foot as Mipo Odubeko wins the ball back. A cross into the crowded penalty box falls to Milan Mbeng. The French full-back is caught off guard but manages to get his shot on target - straight into Zlomislic's gloves!

GOAL! We are heading for extra-time as it stands! It was anything but convincing from Mipo Odubeko in truth. He goes low to his right with just enough power to see the ball squeeze under Martin Zlomislic's grasp.

PENALTY! The Romanian arbiter takes his sweet time to come to the decision... and he points to the spot. Tolka Park erutps. Mipo Odubeko has the ball under his arm.

VAR
HUGE PENALTY APPEAL - a third of this game for Shels! Harry Wood's cross from the right towards John Martin is perfect. Ante Orec gets the wrong side of the Kilkenny native and looks to have clearly pulled his jersey.
VAR is reviewing the footage this time and the Romanian ref is going to his monitor!

Substitution

The introduction of Evan Caffrey is part of a double switch with Ellis Chapman taking over from JJ Lunney to breathe life into the Shels midfield.

Justas Lasickas
This change tells you all you need to know about Rijeka's intentions. Full-back Justas Lasikas replaces the Croatian champions' striker on the night Juric. Time to shut up shop it seems!

Scoring Chance
Shelbourne

Paddy Barrett
Decent chance for Shels a minute after conceding their second goal of the night - Paddy Barrett connects beautifully, but Rijeka goalkeeper Zlomislic watches it sail over his crossbar.

Mladen Devetak
GOAL! Shels are behind on aggregate now. It's another absolute world class strike from Tiago Dantas, but it's all too easy from a Shels perspective.
Full-back Mladen Devetak just passes it inside to the former Bayern Munich academy talent. He looks up with space in front of him, and rifles it into the top-right corner from all of 30 yards. A thunderbolt!
71'
Corner
Shelbourne
Shels get their second corner of the game which is taken by Kerr McInroy, but it yields nothing in an attacking sense. Kameron Ledwidge gives away possession needlessly thereafter.
69'
Scoring Chance
Rijeka
Player
Toni Fruk
The Shels fans are left incensed by a supposed foul on John Martin by Tiago Dantas. Rijeka attack through Toni Fruk who curls wide from the edge of the box.
It's fair to say the Romanian arbiter has let the game flow this evening. No bookings to speak of yet and he's hardly used his whistle!
68'
Success for Robbie Keane's Ferencvaros as Aidan Fitzmaurice updates us on the final score:
Full-time in Budapest and Robbie Keane's Ferencvaros win 3-0 against Ludogorets and enter the playoff round of the Champions League. If their schedules allow - and they both have a big weekend ahead - Keane might put in a call to his former Ireland teammate Joey O'Brien for an insight on Ferencvaros's next opponents, Qarabag, as they knocked O'Brien's Shels out of the Champions League in the last round.
65'
Scoring Chance
Rijeka
Player
Niko Jankovic
SAVE! That was well held by Wessel Speel. Rijeka strike on the counterattack as Niko Jankovic's effort takes a nasty deflection off Paddy Barrett. The 23-year-old reacted brilliantly to keep it out.
61'
Corner
Shelbourne
More protestations for a penalty from Shels as John Martin goes down in the box under pressure from Stjepan Radeljic. VAR doesn't intervene, so it stays as a corner.
58'
Corner
Rijeka
After a strong spell in possession, Rijeka earn themselves a corner which eventually falls to Dejan Petrovic. The 27-year-old Slovenian swings a right boot at it, but sends it high into the Dublin night sky.

Rejected by Arsenal 14 years ago, Eze now taking the Wright route

They say good things come to those who wait. But for Eberechi Eze, it has taken 14 years for his dream to come true. The England forward made a dramatic entrance during Crystal Palace's open training session on Wednesday before their Conference League playoff when he was last to emerge from the changing room with frenzied anticipation that his expected move to Tottenham was close to being agreed. Even if he had been aware of Arsenal's intention to step up their longstanding interest in him, Eze was certainly giving nothing away when he signed autographs and spoke to supporters on his way out of Palace's training ground in Beckenham. It was later on Wednesday afternoon that the Palace chair, Steve Parish, received a call from Arsenal's executive vice-chair, Tim Lewis, indicating they were finally ready to act. The full severity of the knee injury suffered by Kai Havertz during his substitute appearance against Manchester United on Sunday is unknown, although the German forward is expected to be sidelined for the immediate future. With Arsenal facing four of last season's top seven in successive Premier League matches after they entertain Leeds on Saturday, Mikel Arteta felt he was short of numbers in attack. It is understood Parish had reluctantly agreed a fee with Spurs that effectively matched Eze's expired release clause of £67.5m (€78m), albeit with them paying less than the £60m they had asked for up front and with more bonuses included. Arsenal were well aware Palace wanted immediate funds for a replacement and were ready with an offer that satisfied both sides. Their trump card, however, was Eze. He has made no secret of his continued affiliations to the club that released him from their academy at the age of 13, even if the scars of rejection took a long time to heal. 'It's one of the hardest battles I've had,' he told the BBC before the FA Cup final in May. 'Because of what Arsenal meant to me at the time, I had tears rolling down my face.' He was also rejected by Fulham, Reading and Millwall before finally convincing Queens Park Rangers to give him a chance in 2016 as he was preparing to enrol in a local college and start working part-time at Tesco. Their faith was rewarded by Eze's breakthrough into the first team under the watchful eye of Chris Ramsey and Les Ferdinand, the former Tottenham striker who was QPR's director of football when Palace paid £19.5m to sign him in August 2020 and inserted a 15% sell-on clause on any profit. That will ensure QPR receive around £6m from the move to Arsenal. 'Sometimes, as a player, you can think, 'has my chance gone?' But he's shown great strength of character and his ability has shone through,' said Ferdinand when Eze was called up by England for Euro 2024. 'A lot of the best players have been rejected somewhere and it just pushes you on to achieve more.' It took Eze three months to score his first goal for Palace – a brilliant free-kick against Leeds at an empty Selhurst Park – because of Covid restrictions – in November 2020 – before missing most of the next season with an achilles injury that also scuppered his hopes of a first England call-up. But he has flourished since returning, scoring 29 times in the Premier League over the past three seasons and underlining his status as a Palace legend with the winning goal against Manchester City at Wembley as the club lifted their first major trophy. It seems fitting Eze chose a replica of the shirt Ian Wright and co wore in the 1990 FA Cup final for the parade a few days later, which had been donated by a fan. Wright, who joined Arsenal from Palace in September 1991 for £2.5m, was 27 at the time and proved he was more than capable of making the step up. Eze, born and raised in Greenwich – just up the road from Arsenal's original home in Woolwich – will follow Kenny Sansom, Paul Davis and David Rocastle as south Londoners who crossed the river. Eze will always have a special place in the hearts of Palace fans who will not begrudge him this deserved opportunity. As those who have followed the club for generations will testify after waving goodbye to Wright, Andy Johnson and Michael Olise over the years, it is best not to get too attached to your heroes. Mikel Arteta's Arsenal transfer spending tops £1billion and passes Pep Guardiola as Ebereche Eze deal nears completion

ARSENAL'S £67.5million acquisition of Eberechi Eze is set to take Mikel Arteta's transfer spending to north of £1billion. The Gunners hijacked Tottenham's swoop for Eze after Thomas Frank's side had struck a deal with Crystal Palace. 6 Eberechi Eze is set to sign for Arsenal from Crystal Palace Credit: PA 6 Mikel Arteta has splashed the cash at Arsenal Credit: Getty 6 Arsenal spent big on Viktor Gyokeres earlier this summer Credit: Shutterstock Editorial Eze, 27, will undergo a medical at London Colney on Friday after featuring for Palace against Fredrikstad in the Conference League tonight. Arsenal have splashed the cash once again this summer, forking out around £270m on Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera and Eze. Since arriving in December 2019, Arteta has been allowed to fork out plenty of money in order to reshape his squad. The imminent arrival of Eze takes the Spaniard's spending to around £1.097bn. Of the Arsenal starting XI that was picked against Manchester United last weekend, only Bukayo Saka and William Saliba were not signed by Arteta. But for every recruitment success story such as Gabriel Magalhaes and Declan Rice, there are some horrors. For example, in 2022 the Gunners splashed around £34m on Fabio Vieira. The Gunners also spent £19.5m on Takehiro Tomiyasu, who has since had his contract terminated a year early, as well as £32m on fringe player Oleksandr Zinchenko. How Arsenal survived Man Utd's attacks with 'forcefield defence' 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW Injury-plagued Gabriel Jesus cost £45m, while the Gunners also spent £17m on forgotten man Albert Sambi Lokonga in 2021. City, meanwhile, landed Erling Haaland for a snip at £51.4m - but did splurge £100m on Jack Grealish and £45m on Kalvin Phillips. Since Arteta left his Etihad Stadium post as Guardiola's No2 to rock up at Arsenal, Man City have won four Prem titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups and the Champions League. Arsenal, meanwhile, have won a solitary FA Cup, back in 2020 behind closed doors due to Covid-19. Remarkably, no player from the starting XI that day remains at the club - with Kieran Tierney the last man standing before moving on in the summer. Of the matchday squad the last time the Gunners won a major trophy, only unused substitutes Saka and Reiss Nelson are still on the books.
