Grant McCann ‘couldn't be more proud' after Doncaster humble Middlesbrough
McCann, who made 11 changes, labelled his side's performance as 'top class', with goals from Ben Close, Damola Ajayi, Robbie Gotts and Tom Nixon seeing Rovers comfortably into the second round. 'There was energy, bite, togetherness and quality,' said McCann, who led Rovers to promotion to League One last season after arriving back at the club for his second spell in charge in May 2023. 'For 20 to 25 minutes in the first half I thought it was one of the best performances I've seen since I have been back at the club in terms of how we controlled the game. 'It's always good to test yourself against top Championship managers and coaches and from my team, I couldn't be more proud. 'I said to them in there, we don't have a second team, we have a full squad of 23, 24 first-team players – and we showed that.' The defeat is a first at Middlesbrough for head coach Rob Edwards, who described the heavy setback as 'painful'. He said: 'I've spoken to the lads, they know exactly how I feel. The first thing I want to start with is acknowledging our supporters, how they were with us tonight. We didn't hold our end of the bargain up. 'Doncaster have come here and played extremely well but made loads of changes, a whole team of changes and deservedly won the game. That's not acceptable.'

Andre Garcia opens account as Reading upset Portsmouth
Exciting full-back Garcia, 17, was on hand to tap in after Ben Killip had made a sensational double save to thwart Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan in the 34th minute. Ehibhatiomhan kept his cool four minutes later to bully his way past Hayden Matthews and slot beyond Killip, with Tayo Singerr getting a late consolation in the 93rd minute. Before the Royals, showing nine changes from their last league game, had taken control of the game with their quick-fire academy product double, Pompey should have led through their own triple chance. Terry Devlin's cross from the right was headed against his own goalkeeper by Finley Burns, before Mark Kosznovszky and Thomas Waddingham had shots turned off the line. Reading had lost both their opening League One fixtures 2-0 this season and sit at the foot of the table, but also could have netted when Kamari Doyle curled a free-kick onto the roof of the net. Daniel Kyerewaa should have added a late third for Reading, but his low shot met an on-rushing Killip when clean through. It did not stop them from progressing despite youngster Singerr diverting in Adrian Segecic's cross in injury time.

Doncaster stun Middlesbrough to maintain winning start to the season
Grant McCann's newly-promoted side have won their first two games in League One and followed up with an impressive performance on Teesside. McCann made 11 changes at the Riverside but his second string were deserving winners against Boro, who lost under new head coach Rob Edwards for the first time. Rovers took the lead in the 11th minute when Boro were made to pay for cheaply conceding possession in their own half. Jordan Gibson found Billy Sharp in the box and the experienced striker teed up Ben Close, whose shot deflected in off defender George McCormick. The home side responded well and Delano Burgzorg's fierce strike from inside the penalty area crashed off the near post. However, Doncaster doubled their lead in the 23rd minute thanks to another heavy deflection, with Boro defender Alfie Jones diverting Damola Ajayi's shot from inside the box beyond goalkeeper Tom Glover. Robbie Gotts fired in the third goal from outside the box six minutes from time, before Tom Nixon curled in the fourth deep in stoppage time.
