Teen Odisha girl, 2 friends arrested for killing woman who raised her

Hindustan Times16-05-2025

Berhampur , A class 8 girl student and her two male friends were arrested on Friday in Odisha's Gajapati district for allegedly murdering a woman who had adopted the girl after rescuing her from a roadside when she was just three days old, a police officer said.
According to police, the girl and her friends smothered the woman — identified as 54-year-old Rajalaxmi Kar — at her rented house in Paralakhemundi town on April 29.
The motive was allegedly her opposition to the girl's relationship with the two young men and to gain control of her property.
After committing the crime, the accused fabricated a story claiming Rajalaxmi had died of a heart attack.
The next day, , they cremated her body in Bhubaneswar, where some of her relatives resided.
Due to Rajalaxmi's history of heart disease, her family, including her brother, believed the fabricated story, Gajapati SP Jatindra Kumar Panda said.
The truth came to light when the girl's uncle found her hidden mobile phone in Bhubaneswar, which contained Instagram Messenger chats with the two co-accused detailing their plan to murder Rajalaxmi and loot over 70 grams of gold ornaments along with ₹60,000 in cash.
Following the discovery, Siba Prasad Mishra, the deceased's brother, lodged an FIR at Paralakhemundi police station last Wednesday.
A police investigation led to the arrest of the three accused — temple priest Ganesh Rath , Dinesh Sahu , both from Paralakhemundi, and the deceased's 13-year-old adopted daughter.
Police said Rajalaxmi had adopted the girl after rescuing her as an abandoned infant in Bhubaneswar.
After the girl got admission at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Paralakhemundi, the two shifted there and were staying in a rented house.
Recently, the girl developed a relationship with Rath and Sahu, which her mother opposed.
Rath allegedly instigated the girl to murder Rajalaxmi to seize her property and continue their relationship.
On the evening of April 29, the girl reportedly administered sleeping pills to Rajalaxmi.
Once she was unconscious, she summoned her two friends, who smothered the woman with pillows. They later took her to a hospital, where she was declared dead, police added.
Before the murder, the girl had given some of Rajalaxmi's gold ornaments to Rath, who pawned them at a private finance company for around ₹2.4 lakh.
He reportedly used the money to buy a motorcycle and travel across the state.
During investigation, police recovered three mobile phones containing incriminating Instagram chat messages, two pillows used in the murder, and around 30 grams of the looted gold ornaments, police added.

Rs 296 or Rs 390? Bengaluru woman's auto ride turns ugly as driver allegedly sparks Kannada vs Hindi debate

Rapido responds Social media reacts A recent viral video from Bengaluru has reignited a conversation around language, respect, and the everyday battles people face in urban India, not in grand political debates, but at the edge of an autorickshaw seat. A woman named Anya took to Instagram to share a video and her experience after a heated exchange with an autorickshaw driver over a fare dispute. The fare on her ride-hailing app showed Rs 296, while the driver allegedly demanded Rs 390. The video begins with her calmly confronting the driver as he raises his voice, prompting her to ask, 'Chilla kyu rahe ho aap merepe?' (Why are you shouting at me?).She claimed that the driver reportedly mocked her for speaking Hindi, telling her she had no right to talk to him if she didn't know Kannada. Anya described how she felt intimidated, saying he stepped in close and tried to scare her. She emphasized that while she is keen to learn the local language, such hostile behaviour makes her question why the effort to integrate isn't reciprocated with basic respect.'This isn't about refusing to learn Kannada,' she wrote in her post. 'But this was about entitlement, aggression, and disrespect.'Anya clarified that she is someone who doesn't mind paying extra for a pleasant ride. However, she refused to comply when she felt bullied. Her post further highlighted that she lives, works, and contributes to Bengaluru like many others who aren't native Kannada speakers, and she, like everyone else, deserves dignity and fairness regardless of her language. She also clarified by saying that this wasn't about 'North vs South' or 'locals vs outsiders' but about mutual respect and building an inclusive the platform through which the ride was booked, issued an official response, assuring that the captain in question had been permanently removed from their platform. 'Customer safety and dignity are our highest priorities,' the company wrote, adding that stronger protocols for driver behaviour are being internet quickly rallied behind Anya. Several users condemned the incident, with one user sarcastically suggesting the driver should 'stop accepting rides from North Indians' and see how his business survives. Another, identifying as a proud Kannadiga, apologised for the behavior of individuals tarnishing the region's inclusive spirit. 'On behalf of all educated Kannadigas, we extend our sincerest apologies,' they wrote. The incident has sparked a larger discussion about how language can become a tool of exclusion in the Silicon Valley of India.

Bombay HC sets aside rustication letter issued to Pune engineering student for social media post on Operation Sindoor

The Bombay High Court Monday set aside a rustication letter issued by an engineering college in Pune to a 19-year-old student over a social media post during Operation Sindoor, noting that it was issued in breach of natural justice without allowing her to be heard. The high court granted liberty to Sinhgad Academy of Engineering to pass an appropriate decision after hearing her and complying with the principles of natural justice. On May 27, it granted her bail and suspended the rustication order by the college, noting that it was 'hurriedly issued without giving an adequate opportunity to the applicant to respond to any such proposed action appropriately'. The institute rusticated the second-year IT student on May 9 after an FIR was registered against her at the Kondhwa police station in Pune. She was arrested the same day and sent to Yerawada Central Jail. The police said her Instagram post on May 7, in the wake of heightened India-Pakistan military tensions, 'allegedly caused tension between two different religions and was likely to adversely affect public peace'. She was released on May 27 after the Bombay High Court granted her bail. She approached the high court through advocate Farhana Shah and Amin Solkar with a civil writ petition seeking direction to quash the 'arbitrary' rustication letter and that she be reinstated and allowed to appear for the semester exams that were to begin on May 24. She also filed a criminal application challenging the FIR. On Monday, a bench comprising Justices Makarand S Karnik and Nitin R Borkar sought to know from the college whether it would withdraw the rustication letter or the court would pass an order setting it aside. After the college sought an order, the bench noted, 'Admittedly, the letter of rustication is issued in breach of natural justice. The petitioner was not heard before the letter was issued. In view of the matter, impugned letter is set aside with liberty to concerned authority (of college) to pass order after hearing the petitioner and complying with principles of natural justice. The civil writ petition is accordingly allowed.' The court also noted that, as per the May 27 order, the petitioner had made a representation to the college, which was further forwarded to Pune University seeking relief to permit her to appear for the practical and theory exams she had missed during the time she was in custody. The court stated that it had not made any observations on the merits of such a request, and it was open to the director, Board of Examination (BoE) of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), to take an appropriate decision on her representation in an expeditious manner. The high court had earlier pulled up the state authorities and the college for 'absolutely shocking' action against her, despite the petitioner having deleted the social media post within two hours and expressed remorse, tendering an apology. 'It appears that the police officers and college are bent upon ruining her life,' the high court had orally remarked. It had also permitted her to appear for the remaining exams from May 29 and had directed that she should not be called to appear at the police station regarding the probe during her exams.

24-year-old model's last post suggests heartbreak. She was recently engaged. Who was Anjali Varmora?

Anjali Varmora , a young woman from Gujarat , died by suicide at her home early Sunday morning. While her death has left many rattled, it was her last social media post that has garnered a lot of attention and now feels like a haunting cry for help. Who was Anjali Varmora? Anjali was alone at home when she ended her life. Her family, who had stepped out for a late-night outing, returned around 2 a.m. to find the door locked from the inside. When repeated calls went unanswered, they broke in, only to be met with the devastating sight. She was a 24-year-old model and a social media influencer from Surat who had about 38,000 followers on Instagram. She was quite active on Instagram and often dropped photos and videos from ad shoots or shared her life updates. Known for her striking presence and graceful persona, Anjali was engaged to a man from Surat two years ago. The couple had postponed their wedding after the untimely demise of his mother. According to reports by TOI, despite appearing cheerful and composed in public, police say Anjali had been battling depression for some time, a fact her family later confirmed, adding there had been no recent fights or disturbances at home. She lived with her parents and younger brother near Navsari Bazar. The night before her death, she had dinner with her family and chose not to accompany them out, saying she preferred to stay in. What was her last post about? 'Today, you finally made me feel that I mean nothing to you…' she wrote, just hours before she was found dead in her home on early Sunday morning. It was only after her death that a deeper pain surfaced in her digital trail. One of her earlier posts had read: 'If everyone had left, it wouldn't have mattered. But the ones who truly cared left, and that hurts.' Police have registered a case of accidental death and are currently reviewing her call logs and professional engagements to uncover more about what may have led to her tragic decision.
