Former DC teacher arrested, charged with soliciting child pornography: DOJ
Devonne Keith Brown, 56, who taught health at the IDEA Public Charter School, is accused of soliciting child sexual abuse materials from a young girl in Prince George's County, Maryland.
"Those who prey on minors to solicit the production of CSAM are morally reprehensible and will be held accountable for their heinous crimes," said Steven Jensen, assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office. "The FBI remains committed to protecting our children and ridding our communities of this grievous scourge."
Brown is charged with one count of receipt of child pornography and appeared in court Monday. He was detained by a judge pending a Thursday hearing.
In addition to soliciting child porn, Brown also allegedly used CashApp to send payments to the minor, federal prosecutors said.
"for snacks ? more photos otw," one comment states on a $15 CashApp request sent to Brown from a minor, according to court documents.
The unidentified minor told investigators that she met a man named "Joseph" at a grocery store near her home.
She said the man sent her money for ice cream via the app. After communicating with the man on social media, she sent him nude images of herself, authorities said. The man who went by "Joseph" also sent the minor images of nude women and asked her to recreate them for him, prosecutors said.
Upon further investigation, authorities allege that they also found sexually graphic images and videos in emails sent to Brown by minors.
In a statement to FOX 5 DC, the charter school said it was "deeply concerned" by the allegations against Brown.
"This individual is no longer employed by the school," the school said. "The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and supporting their ongoing investigation. Based on the information currently available to us, there is no indication that any IDEA student was directly involved."

However, this bill has not been passed by either the Senate or the House. Previous stimulus payments were made possible only through legislation passed by Congress. For instance, the relief checks issued during the COVID-19 pandemic were authorized under three major laws: the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the COVID-Related Tax Relief Act, and the American Rescue Plan Act. Why It Matters: The rumors of new stimulus checks had sparked hope among many taxpayers who are still grappling with the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. 13-Year-Old Girl Drowns in New Jersey After Going Missing While Swimming at Beach
The teenager was found "unresponsive in the water" at a beach in Belmar on Friday, Aug. 15 NEED TO KNOW A 13-year-old girl has died after going missing in the waters of a New Jersey beach on Friday, Aug. 15 According to the Belmar Police Department, Belmar Water Rescue located her in the water around an hour after she had been reported missing "Despite extensive efforts, the victim was pronounced deceased," Belmar police said in a news release A 13-year-old girl has died after being recovered from the waters of a beach in New Jersey. At around 6:36 p.m. local time on Friday, Aug. 15, police received "several 911 calls of a swimmer in distress' off Eighth Avenue beach in Belmar, the Belmar Police Department said in a news release shared on Facebook. When police arrived, they learned one person was out of the water while a 13-year-old was still missing. Belmar Water Rescue entered the water in an attempt to locate the missing teenager, according to the police. Around an hour later, she was found 'unresponsive in the water' off Seventh Avenue beach. 'The victim was removed from the water, where life-saving efforts were made by Belmar lifeguards, Belmar EMS, Wall Township EMS, and Hackensack Meridian Paramedics,' according to the police news release. Having then been brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, the teenager was pronounced deceased 'despite extensive efforts.' No lifeguards were on duty at the time of the incident, per CBS News New York and NBC New York. Lifeguards are on duty in the area from 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on the weekends, according to the Belmar Beach website. The identity of the teenage victim has not been released by the Belmar Police Department amid their investigation. National Guard Detained Man Who Assaulted a Park Police Officer, Authorities Say
D.C. National Guard soldiers temporarily detained a man on Friday who the authorities say assaulted a U.S. Park Police officer on the National Mall. It was the first such action by the Guard since President Trump ordered 800 Guard troops to the streets of the capital this week to help fight crime. Local officials have criticized the deployment as unnecessary. The Park Police officer asked for help after being thrown to the ground during an altercation with the man, an Army spokesman said. A National Guard team observed the incident and asked if the officer needed help, the spokesman said. When the officer said yes, the Guard team pursued and detained the person about a block away. The man was escorted back to the Park Police officer and transferred to Park Police custody, the spokesman said. The Park Police said in an email that the person had been arrested on the charge of assault on a police officer, and would make an appearance in court on Saturday. The Guard members deployed in Washington do not have arrest authority, but are authorized to temporarily detain people until federal authorities take them into custody. This week, they have largely been a presence near monuments or around high-profile buildings like Union Station. Much of the heightened police activity in other parts of the city in recent days has involved D.C. police officers, along with federal agents from the F.B.I. and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
