Vasyl Lomachenko announces retirement from boxing: ‘I am grateful for every victory and defeat'
Lomachenko retires as a former three-weight world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist, and he relinquishes the IBF lightweight title by calling time on his in-ring career.
The Ukrainian southpaw last fought in May 2024, stopping George Kambosos Jr on the Australian's home turf to win that belt and take his professional record to 18-3 (12 knockouts).
His only defeats were close but unanimous decisions against Teofimo Lopez in 2020 and Devin Haney in 2023, and a split decision against Orlando Salido in 2014.
The latter result came in just his second pro bout, with the vacant WBO featherweight title on the line. 'Loma' won the belt in his next outing and retained it in his following three bouts, before moving to super-featherweight and winning the WBO strap in that division. Lomachenko retained his super-featherweight title four times before climbing up again and winning the WBO lightweight belt.
After collecting the WBC lightweight title in 2019, Lomachenko suffered his defeat by Lopez in an IBF unification bout, before winning three fights in a row prior to his controversial loss to Haney.
Lomachenko bounced back again by stopping Kambosos Jr in his final fight, adding to notable wins over Jorge Linares, Luke Campbell, Anthony Crolla, Jose Pedraza and Jamaine Ortiz.
Prior to turning pro, Lomachenko won featherweight gold at the 2008 Olympics and lightweight gold at the 2012 Games. He also won World Championship gold in 2009 and 2011, and European gold in 2008.
'First and foremost, I want to thank our Lord, Jesus Christ, for everything he has done for me, for guiding a prideful young man down a path that routinely showed me that fame, legacy and recognition are not the true purpose of life,' Lomachenko said in a social-media video on Thursday (5 June).
'I am grateful for every victory and every defeat, both in the ring and in life. I am thankful that, as my career comes to an end, I have gained clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve true victory – not just in the ring but in overcoming their old self. Only then can one receive their true reward.
'I thank God for my wonderful, honest and kind parents – for their care, their love and their warmth, [which] I felt throughout my life. My father [and trainer Anatoly Lomachenko] not only taught me the art of boxing but also how to be a role model for my own children, the same way he has always been for me.
'I have made many mistakes in life and in the gym, but he was always by my side correcting me when needed, praising me. I have many warm memories. I love you deeply, dad. I bow before you and dedicate the most helpful words in the world to you. You are my No 1.
'To my family: you have always stood by me. You shared in my victories with joy and felt the pain of my losses, but those moments only made us stronger.
'Dear Egis [Klimas], thank you for everything you have done for me and my family. You are a man who knows his craft, the best manager in the world who became a friend and part of our family.
'Your professionalism goes hand in hand with your character: honesty, integrity, kindness and the ability to find the solution in any situation. You are a rare manager who handled every challenge 100 per cent. I wish you the best of health so that, through you, new boxing stars can rise.
'I want to thank [promotional company] Top Rank and Mr Bob Arum for the amazing opportunity to showcase my abilities in boxing. I am grateful to the United States of America for giving me the chance to realise my potential.
'And of course, I would also be remiss not to thank you, my dear boxing fans around the world. You have always supported me with passion and lived through unforgettable fights alongside me for over a decade. I hope you continue to love and respect this sport, because the men who step in the ring risk their health for the sake of their families. Peace to all, may the Lord bless his people.'

Sha'Carri Richardson breaks silence on arrest over airport incident with boyfriend
U.S. gold medalist sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson said she is seeking 'a certain level of help' in her first comments since her July 27 arrest for an alleged domestic violence incident at a Seattle airport. Richardson, 25, shoved her boyfriend, U.S. sprinter Christian Coleman, multiple times at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, as seen on security footage. 7 Richardson in the video she posted to her Instagram Story. @itsshacarri/Instagram 'More than anything, definitely a lot of self reflection, a lot of understanding of not only putting myself in a compromising situation with somebody that I have a deep care and appreciation for as well, is something that — holding myself accountable,' Richardson said in a minute-plus video posted to her Instagram Story late Monday night. 'I'm taking this time to not only see myself but get myself a certain level of help that overall is going to reflect who I truly am in my heart and in my spirit and not allowing this moment, but accepting this moment to be more. 'So my only thing is, I want to be more — not just only for myself, for my family, my fans. I overly appreciate y'all supporting me and showing love and even holding me accountable to being my best self. So more than anything, I refused to run away … but face everything that comes to me head-on because everything on the other side is greater but you gotta go through in order to get there.' Richardson, who won a gold in the 4x100m relay and a silver in the 100m at the 2024 Paris Olympics, allegedly had a fiery argument with Coleman that turned physical last month, per The Athletic. An officer looked at security footage that showed Richardson allegedly grab Coleman's backpack and pull it, before she purportedly shoved him into a wall while he tried to evade her. 7 Richardson and Coleman (middle-left) at the airport. TMZ Sports The footage revealed that Richardson shoved Coleman multiple times. Richardson also 'appeared' to throw what may have been headphones at Coleman, according to the Associated Press, and she was arrested on a fourth-degree domestic violence assault. Richardson spent roughly 19 hours at the SCORE South Correctional Entity, and The Athletic reported earlier this month that the case had been cleared by the Port of Seattle Police Department. 7 Richardson also posted this photo to her Story. @itsshacarri/Instagram 7 Christian Coleman said his girlfriend should not have been arrested. CITIUS MAG/X Coleman, 29, did not press charges and 'declined to be a victim,' per the AP. He felt his girlfriend of more than two years should not have been arrested. 'For me personally, I feel like it was a sucky situation all round,' Coleman said on Aug. 3. 'I don't feel like she should have been arrested. I mean people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that. She has things that she needs to work on for herself, of course. So do I, so do you, so does everybody. 'But I'm the type of guy who's in the business of extending grace, and mercy and love. I hate the narrative too … its so negative. In the state of Seattle, even talking to the cop to whatever, he was like, 'There is really nothing I can do.'' 7 Richardson during the U.S. Championships on Aug. 3, 2025. AP He added: 'She just has a lot of things going on, a lot of emotions and forces going on inside of her that not only I can't understand, but nobody can because she's one of one. And I'm one of one too… She's going to be just fine. I'm going to be good too. So, it is what it is.' Richardson competed at the 2025 U.S. track. and field championships following the arrest, ultimately withdrawing from the 100-meter and finishing fourth in her 200-meter heat. She missed out on the rescheduled 2020 Olympics in 2021 due to a positive marijuana test.

Reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder will take on Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets on NBC to tip off the NBA season on Oct. 21, NBC Sports and the NBA announced Tuesday. The matchup between the Thunder and Rockets will be followed up by the latest chapter in the rivalry between LeBron James and Stephen Curry, as the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors also face off on opening night. The two games will not only mark the beginning of a new season, they will also be the first NBA games to air on NBC since the 2002 finals. Mike Tirico, Reggie Miller, Jamal Crawford and Zora Stephenson will call the game between Oklahoma City and Houston, which tips off at 7:30 p.m. ET. The season will begin with a matchup of teams expected to be two of the best in the West. The Rockets, meanwhile, added a future Hall of Famer in Durant to a young core that includes center Alperen Sengun and wingman Amen Thompson. The nightcap will feature foes-turned-friends in James and Curry, who played each other in four straight championship series from 2015 to 2018, then teamed up at the Paris Olympics in 2024 to capture gold for the United States. Doncic and Butler will be joining the fray, as both will be starting their first full seasons with their respective teams. Shortly after the "NBA Tip-Off" games, "Peacock NBA Monday" will debut on Oct. 27 with its own doubleheader starting at 7 p.m. ET.
