Policing the traffic
Sir, – As a retired orthopaedic surgeon I have spent a considerable amount of my professional life dealing with road traffic victims. According to the recent, as yet unpublished Crowe report, 'gardaí working in road policing were openly 'hostile' towards doing their jobs', In most instances policing for speeding and 'jumping' red lights can be fully automated with existing technology, freeing up gardaí for other duties. All roads in London and other English cities are monitored by such technology. My daughter recently received a speeding ticket in London for driving at 21 mph in a 20mph zone! READ MORE Over the past year, having driven some 7,000 miles, I am aware of only seeing two speed vans. As a so-called country designated for hi-tech we remain in the dark ages. – Yours, etc, JAMES M SHEEHAN(FRCS), Blackrock, Co Dublin.

This seizure forms part of Operation Tara; an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy, which was launched by former Garda Commissioner Drew Harris on July 2, 2021. The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels – international, national, local – involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale and supply of controlled drugs. Dave Franco addresses rumours over Luigi Mangione biopic
Dave Franco has been frequently fan-cast for a potential Luigi Mangione biopic, and the resemblance can definitely be seen. The killing of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson was one of the most explosive stories from last year, and it feels like a matter of time before a movie is made about it. Luigi Mangione allegedly shot the 50-year-old in broad daylight in Manhattan and subsequently disappeared for a few days. Luigi Mangione could face the death penalty. Pic: Curtis Means – Pool/Getty Images The case was one of the most talked-about moments of the year, including when he was found and arrested. Fans noticed the resemblance between the 27-year-old and Dave Franco fairly quickly and naturally fan-casted him in whatever form of 'entertainment' eventually comes out of the case. During his appearance on 'Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen', a fan asked Dave about the possibility of playing the role and the actor made it clear that while no talks have been had, he would be open to it. The 'Now You See Me' star said: 'Oh, how do I answer this… no one has approached me about it yet, I'll say that. 'More people in my life reached out about this exact thing than anything else that has ever happened … So let's just say I'm open if it's the right people, and let's leave it at that.' Dave Franco bears quite the resemblance to Luigi. Pic: Raymond Hall/GC Images The Mangione case is of course still ongoing so it's not surprising that the 40-year-old was careful about his response to the question. Luigi is currently locked up at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, New York, but hasn't been sentenced. At this point, a biopic on this case wouldn't be possible to go forward with, as its outcome has yet to be determined. The federal charges that he is up against are eligible for the death penalty, which federal prosecutors have said they intend to pursue. Luigi is currently locked up in Brooklyn. Pic:His legal team recently accused the Manhattan District Attorney's office of wrongfully obtaining his medical records by compelling Aetna, a health insurance company, to turn over confidential information, which violates health privacy laws. His attorneys also accused the DA's office of listening to a recording of a phone call with their client and they are seeking to have at least two of the counts against him thrown out. Luigi has pleaded not guilty and his next court date is set for mid September.
