Sofia Coppola Will Direct a Documentary About Marc Jacobs
It was announced this morning that Sofia Coppola will debut a documentary about longtime friend and collaborator Marc Jacobs at next month's Venice Film Festival in an out-of-competition slot. The film will be titled Marc by Sofia, a play on Jacobs's now defunct Marc by Marc Jacobs line.
This will be the first documentary for Coppola, who has directed industry favorite films like Priscilla, Marie Antoinette, and The Virgin Suicides. It's also Jacobs' first dedicated feature in a documentary since 2007's Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton.
The two creatives have worked together for decades. Coppola starred in a Marc Jacobs fragrance campaign shot by Juergen Teller in 2002, collaborated with Jacobs on a bag collection while he worked at Louis Vuitton, appeared in his Fall 2015 ads, and worked with him on his in-house Heaven by Marc Jacobs line launched in 2020. Both have become emblematic of New York's downtown fashion scene in the '80s and '90s.
There is no information yet surrounding which aspects of the life and career of Jacobs, who is fresh off the heels of his Fall 2025 show at the New York Public Library, the film will center. The infamous grunge collection for Perry Ellis, his stint as creative director of Louis Vuitton from 1997 to 2013, his work on his namesake line with its larger-than-life runway collections and youth-forward sister line Heaven—there's so much to encapsulate. Regardless, that premiere's red carpet—hopefully filled with fashion and film industry friends like Anna Sui and Kirsten Dunst and Coppola's new-to-the-spotlight daughters Romy and Cosima—will be one to watch.

Jussie Smollett to speak in Netflix documentary about hate crime hoax
Jussie Smollett's alleged hate crime hoax is the subject of an upcoming Netflix documentary. The streamer announced Tuesday that 'The Truth About Jussie Smollett?' will be released on the platform Aug. 22, according to Deadline. Producers of the true-crime hits 'Tinder Swindler,' 'Trainwreck' and 'Don't F**k with Cats' are behind the 90-minute project, comprised of interviews with police officials, lawyers, journalists and Smollett himself. The film centers on the yearslong legal saga launched by Chicago investigators, who determined the 'Empire' actor staged a 2019 hate crime attack as a 'publicity stunt' to advance his career. The documentary has been described as the 'shocking true story of an allegedly fake story that some now say might just be a true story.' In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, director Gagan Rehill said the film 'is a thrilling ride, and we were lucky enough to have access to the key players.' Smollett claimed in January 2019 that unknown assailants attacked him on a Chicago street, punching him in the face, pouring a chemical substance on him and putting a noose around his neck while yelling racial and homophobic slurs. Two brothers associated with Smollett, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, later confessed to having been involved in a scheme orchestrated by the openly gay actor to make it look as though he'd been accosted by Trump-supporting extremists. The 43-year-old NAACP Image Award winner was arrested and later found guilty on a handful of charges related to the incident. He was sentenced to 150 days in jail in 2022, but was released after six days pending an appeal. His conviction was overturned last November as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in exchange for community service and the forfeiture of his $10,000 bond. Smollett, who has always denied any wrongdoing, also agreed to donate at least $50,000 to Chicago's Building Better Futures Center for the Arts organization to resolve the city's lawsuit against him. _____

"He's so tall, and handsome as hell" – but is he Alexander Skarsgård? For years, one of the favorite Swiftie fan theories has purported that Taylor Swift's steamy song "Wildest Dreams" from her 1989 album was written about the Swedish actor, with whom she briefly worked on the 2014 film The Giver. Dax Shepard attempted to get Skarsgård to speak on the matter in a new episode of his Armchair Expert podcast. Shepard told his guest that for years, he has tried convincing his two young daughters, who are big fans of Swift's music, that the song is actually about him. He recalled how he continued the bit when he took his 12-year-old daughter, Lincoln, to an Eras Tour concert in Lisbon, Portugal, and Swift played the song during the 1989 portion of her set. "And then in my f---ing research today, I read that the song is about you," Shepard told Skarsgård, who laughed and then tried to pin it back on Shepard. "Wait, she saw you in the audience, and she's like, 'I'm gonna sing this song' — maybe it is about you," Skarsgård joked of Shepard, adding, "I wasn't in the crowd in Lisbon, so it was clearly about you." Shepard then asked his guest if he, too, had "the same fear to either acknowledge or deny that that could be true because the power of the Swifties is so strong that you just don't wanna talk about it." The Murderbot actor laughed and admitted, 'Yeah.' Shepard then remarked that he couldn't believe he'd been making that joke with his kids for six years. Skarsgård added, "It's about Brad Pitt, guys, let's be honest." The actor didn't confirm or deny that the song is about him, but he did eventually joke, "I'm going to be honest. I wrote the lyrics of that song myself and sent it to Taylor. 'Taylor, here's what you should say.'"
