France opens inquiry into 'violent' death of Kick streamer 'JP'

France-based streamer Raphael Graven, who went by the online alias "Jean Pormanove" or simply "JP," reportedly died Monday after being subjected to about 10 days of violence and sleep deprivation during a streaming. According to French prosecutors, Graven died at a property near Nice in the village of Contes, miles from the Mediterranean Sea and the Principality of Monaco. "Jean Pormanove was humiliated and mistreated for months live on the Kick platform," stated Clara Chappaz, France's digital affairs and artificial intelligence minister. She added that a judicial investigation was underway. "The death of Jean Pormanove and the violence he suffered are an absolute horror," Chappaz added. Graven, 46, was a tall, slim man with glasses who had more than 1 million followers and was known for live-streaming his extreme challenges. Unverified social media footage depicted multiple men beating and choking JP at one point, noticing he appeared lifeless on a mattress, at which point the live broadcast was quickly cut off. Kick said officials were "urgently reviewing" the situation and its fatal circumstances. Another French official called the violent death "horrifying." "(Social media platforms) have an immense responsibility in regulating online content so that our children are not exposed to violent content," Sarah El Hairy, France's high commissioner for children, posted on X. "I call on parents to be extremely vigilant," she continued. A Kick spokesperson said the Twitch-like streaming platform was "deeply saddened" by the loss of Jeanpormanove and "extend our condolences to his family, friends and community." "Kick's community guidelines are designed to protect creators, and we remain committed to upholding these standards across our platform," it said in a statement. A co-creator, Naruto, paid tribute to his "brother, sidekick, partner" in an Instagram post and asked the public to "respect" his memory and not repost his violent end. It follows a 2014 unrelated incident when a 25-year-old French man from near Paris killed a French policeman and his wife and claimed allegiance the the Islamic State in a live-streamed attack on Facebook.

Day 3 of trial for alleged mastermind in Young Dolph murder

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hernandez Govan, the man accused of orchestrating the death of rapper Young Dolph, is set to appear in court for day three of his trial Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, Angela Arnold, the girlfriend of Cornelius Smith, was the first witness to take the stand. She told the court that to her knowledge, Smith never had direct contact with Big Jook and that he would communicate with Govan to send and receive messages. She also testified she saw Govan at a carwash hours after Young Dolph's death, when Smith picked up a cellphone from Govan he had left in the white Mercedes used in the murder. Various Memphis Police Investigators were then called to testify in court, along with cell phone records. According to the investigators, they went over calls and text records of Goavn, Smith, and Big Jook in the months leading up to the murder and afterward. They say Smith appeared to have several outgoing calls to Govan. But in cross-examination, Govan's defense attorney explained the reasoning for their communication, saying, Govan supplied Smith with various types of pills, and Johnson talked with him because he was an aspiring rapper. Another investigator who testified said detectives went to the airport to execute a search warrant on Big Jook's phone and asked if they could speak to him, but he refused. Angler used antique phone to catch fish, and that's illegal, Georgia cops say
Illegal fishing reached a new level in rural Georgia when a man used an antique crank phone to electrocute fish, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The discovery was made around 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, when two game wardens noted a man and woman acting suspiciously along a creek in Wilkes County, the DNR Law Enforcement Division reported in an Aug. 19 Facebook post. 'As (game wardens) approached, they observed the male subject moving away with a wooden box in his hands,' officials said in the post. 'As they got closer, the man threw the box into the creek. Sgt. (Matt) Garthright was able to retrieve the box from the creek and identified it as an outlawed fishing technique — an old crank telephone used to shock fish.' The 29-year-old man is from Mississippi and was in Georgia for work, Garthright told McClatchy News in an email. The two suspects were questioned and neither had valid fishing licenses, DNR officials said. 'They were given the opportunity to get in compliance by immediately purchasing fishing licenses online. The male subject was charged with shocking fish and the old crank telephone was confiscated,' the department reported. Electricity is known to temporarily stun fish, causing them to float to the surface, experts say. Crank telephones were among the earliest models of the telephone, with internal batteries and a crank 'used for signaling the operator or other directly connected telephones,' according to Antique Telephones. Wilkes County is about a 110-mile drive east from Atlanta.
