Saturday's Racing Tips: Best Bets for Kelso And Newbury

Independent21-03-2025
Norn Iron (Newbury, 2.05) – each-way @ 5/1 bet365 (four places)
Old Cowboy (Newbury, 2.05) – each-way @ 12/1 Betfred (four places)
Barrabool (Kelso, 3.00) – each-way @ 7/1 bet365 (four places)
Jasmine Bliss (Newbury, 3.15) – each-way @ 5/1 Betfred (five places)
La Pinsonniere (Newbury, 3.15) – each-way @ 10/1 William Hill (five places)
Kiwi Rush (Kelso, 4.45) – to win @ SP
Fidelio Vallis (Newbury, 5.35) – to win @ SP
Saturday could be a big day for Harry Derham who boasts several good chances at both Newbury and Kelso with Jasmine Bliss (Newbury, 3.15pm) one of the leading hopes for the young Berkshire trainer.
Much like her handler's season, there have been a few ups and downs for the selection who was defeated at odds-on on her hurdling debut at Lingfield prior to being well beaten when again fancied at Ffos Las.
Derham attributed the Ffos Las reverse to trainer error and has since made up for the loss by saddling his six-year-old to win in smooth fashion at Ludlow and Southwell in minor events.
Her latest success, achieved at the expense of La Pinsonniere, was authoritative from the outset and sets her up well in this event, plus she has solid course form on her CV courtesy of a game bumper win at Saturday's venue 12 months ago.
Nico de Boinville has retained the faith in La Pinsonniere despite Nick Henderson saddling three runners and the decision to utilise first-time cheekpieces could well narrow the gap between his mount and Jasmine Bliss. She is worth a saver with most betting sites offering enhanced place terms on the first five home.
Derham enjoys chances throughout the card at Newbury with Norn Iron (Newbury, 2.05pm) expected to appreciate this step up in trip after a staying-on fourth at Doncaster over two miles last time.
Recent Plumpton scorer Old Cowboy looks overpriced on some horse racing betting sites in the same race with his form here behind Jurancon (now rated 132) back in January looking a smart run as times goes by. The four places with bet365 looks a concession worth taking on board.
One of Derham's stable stalwarts; Fidelio Vallis (Newbury, 5.35pm) could bookend the day's action with a heartwarming victory in the finale.
The 10-year-old was one of the first horses sent to the former Paul Nicholls assistant when he began training in Lambourn and his career record when returned to the track within 26 days reads a highly impressive five wins from seven starts.
The veteran also boasts a terrific record in small fields over fences with his stats in seven-runner fields or less reading 21111244216. The selection ran a blinder in the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster and should appreciate this return to three miles with Paul O'Brien back on board.
Saturday's Kelso Tips: Kiwi Has Tee-rific Chance
Derham has also sent a raiding party 350 miles north to Kelso where the well-handicapped Barrabool (Kelso, 3.00pm) has had the final of the mares' novices' handicap hurdle as her target for the majority of the season. Walkadina may prove one of the chief threats despite her reverse at odds-on at Ludlow as she looked in need of the run that day.
Finally, keep an eye on Kiwi Rush (Kelso, 4.45pm) on betting apps in the closing bumper.
Owned by a collection of the world's best golfers with the syndicate headed up by Graeme McDowell, the son of Mahler left behind a modest UK debut at Sandown to win handsomely at Saturday's venue last month and is very much fancied to go close again under Patrick Mullins.

Man Utd vs Arsenal prediction, team news & bet builder tips

Both teams to score and Manchester United to win - 6/1 Bet365 Bryan Mbuemo to score - 17/5 BetVictor Manchester United kick off their Premier League season on Sunday, taking on Arsenal in the late kick-off, as they look to make a huge improvement on last season. The Red Devils, who have won the title 20 times, finished 15th in May, 32 points behind Sunday's opponents and 42 behind the Champions Liverpool, which is the same as the number of points they picked up from their 38 games. Boss Ruben Amorim only took charge in November, and it was anything but a dream start to life at Old Trafford, winning just 16 of his 42 games in charge, but after spending just shy of £200m, he will be confident of a huge improvement this time around. The Gunners would also love an improvement on their league position after finishing as runners-up for the last three seasons; the last time they bettered that was back in 2003/04, when they won the last of their 13 league titles. United have actually been champions more recently, winning their last title back in 2012/13. Mikel Arteta has spent a similar amount as Amorim, bringing in five players, including strikers Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres, who he hopes can take them to the next step. Gyokeres was long linked with a move to Old Trafford to link up with his former Sporting manager, but instead, after scoring 57 goals in 49 appearances last season, he joined Arsenal for £64m. Man Utd vs Arsenal tips: United to get off to a flying start According to the Premier League winner odds, Arsenal are second favourites behind Liverpool, while United are fifth in the betting behind City and Chelsea. You can also get 15/4 on United finishing in the Premier League top four odds, while the Gunners are 1/5. The first game of the season is always hard to predict, but this is the perfect fixture for both sides to see where they're at. United have lost just two of their last 18 home league games against Arsenal, winning 10 and drawing six; however, both of those defeats have occurred since Arteta took charge. A win on Sunday would be the Reds' 100th over Arsenal in all competitions. They have met 243 times with United winning 99, Arsenal 89 and 55 draws, and a victory this weekend would make them the first ever team to beat Arsenal 100 times. Football betting sites have installed Arsenal as favourites, while United are home underdogs in the latest Premier League odds. The visitors have scored in each of their last 11 away league games at Old Trafford, which could make a compelling case for targeting a score draw. An even bolder bet would be to take the 6/1 odds on both teams to score and United to win. United's biggest issue last season was scoring goals with just 44 league goals but the signing of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko should certainly fix that problem. Man Utd vs Arsenal betting: Mbeumo to shine on debut Former Brentford striker Mbeumo scored the first goal in 10 different games last season, on his way to scoring 21 goals for club and country, including against Arsenal in a 3-1 defeat. He also scored in the first minute in two consecutive games against Tottenham and West Ham, and he would no doubt love to get his United career off to a flying start. Betting sites are offering 10/1 on him doing it again on Sunday, you can also get 11/1 on him scoring last, but we like the price for him to score anytime on his Old Trafford bow. Man Utd vs Arsenal prediction 2: Bryan Mbuemo to score anytime - 17/5 BetVictor Man Utd vs Arsenal team news Man Utd vs Arsenal betting offers Betfred are offering existing customers the chance to claim £10 in free bets after placing a £10 bet builder on Man Utd vs Arsenal or any Premier League match across the opening weekend of the season. To qualify bettors must opt-in on the promotion before placing a £10 bet builder before kick-off on your selected game. Your bet builder must contain three selections or more and odds of 3/1 or greater. Once your qualifying wager has settled, your account will be credited with a £10 free bet to use on a bet builder. Free bets are active until 11.59pm on August 23. Please gamble responsibly When having a bet, it's vital to practice responsible gambling. Betting can be addictive and it's important to stay in control of your betting. Never treat gambling as a way to make money, never bet more than you can afford and when the fun stops, stop. Gambling sites offer punters tools, like deposit limits, profit and loss trackers and self-exclusion options, to help them stay in control. But if you ever feel like you need help or advice on gambling addiction, don't hesitate to contact one of the charities or organisations below.

Saturday's EFL predictions: Championship, League One and League Two tips and odds

Our expert has picked out four tips for Saturday's matches in the Championship, League One and League Two. We think Crewe Alexandra and Stockport County can continue their winning starts to their respective seasons. Saturday's EFL tips Wrexham draw no bet vs West Bromwich Albion @ 5/6 with bet365 (12.30pm) Huddersfield Town to beat Blackpool @ 8/5 with bet365 (3pm) Crewe to beat Crawley Town @ 10/11 with bet365 (3pm) Stockport to beat Leyton Orient @ 29/20 with bet365 (3pm) Odds courtesy of bet365. Wrexham can secure first win back in second tier Unsurprisingly, Wrexham's first two games of the season have not been without drama. After conceding in the 90th and 96th minutes to relinquish the lead in a 2-1 defeat to Southampton on the Championship's opening weekend, they scored two stoppage-time goals of their own to draw with Hull City in the EFL Cup first round before going on to win 5-3 on penalties. Phil Parkinson can draw on plenty of positives from their first two games against Championship opposition and they are overpriced to beat West Brom. The Baggies won their Championship opener 1-0 against Blackburn Rovers but they have surely taken a bit of a mental hit after conceding a 96th-minute equaliser to draw 1-1 with Derby County in the EFL Cup before losing 3-2 on penalties. At 5/6, backing Wrexham in the draw-no-bet market is the way to go. Tangerines' struggles set to continue against Terriers Blackpool looked like they could be play-off contenders coming into the new League One season, but it has been a disastrous start for Steve Bruce's men. The Seasiders leaked seven goals in league defeats to Stevenage and Exeter City before they were dumped out of the EFL Cup by Port Vale, losing 1-0 at home. As for Huddersfield, they have barely put a foot wrong in League One so far, beating Leyton Orient 3-0 and Reading 2-0 before beating Championship side Leicester City on penalties in the EFL Cup, so 8/5 looks a big price for the Terriers. Table-toppers Crewe can maintain strong start Crewe came unstuck against Stockport in Tuesday's EFL Cup first-round battle, but that was expected given they are a division below County and they still gave a decent account of themselves. In League Two, though, the Railwaymen look like they mean business. Crewe recruited well over the summer, bringing in the likes of Josh March, Louis Moult and Emre Tezgel to enhance their attack, and they have taken down Salford City (3-1) and Accrington Stanley (2-0) in their first two league assignments. Their next opponents are Crawley, who have lost each of their three competitive games this term. Crewe are a solid pick at 10/11, both as a single and for accumulators. Another victory on the cards for red-hot Hatters It is still very early days in the EFL but Stockport have been one of the most impressive teams in League One after just two games. County, who finished third on 87 points in League One last season, were dealt a fairly tough opening pair of games but navigated them well, beating Bolton Wanderers (2-0) and Wycombe Wanderers (2-1) in the league. They were then 3-1 winners over Crewe on Tuesday and, with new signings Malik Mothersille and loanee Nathan Lowe having already opened their accounts, it could be a great season for the Hatters. They look big at 29/20 to defeat Leyton Orient, who have lost two of their opening three games and are still adjusting to sweeping personnel changes over the summer.

Weekend European football predictions: La Liga and Ligue 1 tips and odds

Our expert has picked out four tips from Saturday and Sunday's matches in Spain's La Liga and France's Ligue 1. We think Strasbourg and Valencia can both post wins. Saturday's European football tips Mika Biereth to score for Monaco vs Le Havre @ 10/11 with bet365 (Saturday, 6pm BST) Valencia to beat Real Sociedad @ 8/5 with bet365 (Saturday, 8.30pm BST) Getafe or draw double chance vs Celta Vigo @ 21/20 with bet365 (Sunday, 4pm BST) Strasbourg to beat Metz @ 5/4 with bet365 (Sunday, 4.15pm BST) Odds courtesy of bet365. Correct at the time of publication and subject to change. Already a bet365 member? Check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. Monaco vs Le Havre (Saturday, 6pm) Assuming Paris Saint-Germain again dominate Ligue 1 this season, Monaco are expected to be in the mix to finish best of the rest, having added the likes of Paul Pogba, Ansu Fati, Eric Dier and Lukas Hradecky to their ranks. But it is a player Monaco signed last season who could make an impact in their opener against Le Havre. Striker Mika Biereth joined the club from Sturm Graz in January and the 22-year-old adapted quickly to Ligue 1 with 13 goals in 16 league appearances. Going into his first full season at the club, he is a value bet at 10/11 to score in their opener against Le Havre, having found the net when the sides met in April. Valencia vs Real Sociedad (Saturday, 8pm) When Carlos Corberan left West Bromwich Albion to take charge at Valencia in December, he inherited a side who were 19th in the La Liga table. But under the former Huddersfield boss, Valencia got their act together, going unbeaten in 10 La Liga fixtures towards the end of the campaign to finish 12th. Corberan has now had a full summer to work with his side, bringing in some talented individuals such as Arnaut Danjuma and Baptiste Santamaria, and his team look overpriced at 8/5 to beat Real Sociedad. Valencia won just 11 league games last season but nine of those victories came at the Mestalla and Real Sociedad, who sold pivotal midfielder Martin Zubimendi this summer, lost 10 times on their travels in La Liga last season. Celta Vigo vs Getafe (Sunday, 4pm) The Estadio de Balaidos was not an easy place to go in La Liga last season, so it is no surprise that Celta Vigo are odds-on favourites to win there against Getafe on Sunday. But at this stage of the season, I'd be cautious about backing them at 8/11, given they have lost star youngster Fer Lopez to Wolves this summer and are overreliant on ageing forwards Borja Iglesias and Iago Aspas, who turned 38 this month. Getafe finished a respectable 13th in La Liga last term and defensive solidity was at the core of that, with just 39 goals conceded in 38 league matches – the same number as champions Barcelona. They are worth backing at 21/20 to nick at least a point off of Vigo. Metz vs Strasbourg (Sunday, 4.15pm) It could be an exciting season for Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, who are preparing for the Conference League play-offs this month after finishing seventh in the French top flight last season. They look in a good place under Liam Rosenior and have added some exciting young talent over the summer with the likes of Joaquin Panichelli, Lucas Hogsberg and Mathis Amougou joining and Valentin Barco and Andrew Omobamidele's loan deals made permanent. The core of the squad looks much the same, with key defender Mamadou Sarr sold to Chelsea but brought back in on loan, Felix Lemarechal a creative midfield threat and Emanuel Emegha leading the line after scoring 14 Ligue 1 goals last term. At 5/4, they look a decent pick to beat Metz, who came up via the promotion play-offs last term and could be out of their depth after failing to win 16 games in the second tier.
