Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit giving up pro football and returning to the pitch
Rees-Zammit announced on social media Thursday that he is returning to rugby.
'There'll be more news to come soon, but for now, see you soon rugby fans,' he wrote.
Rees-Zammit, 24, joined the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars last September and changed positions, switching from running back to receiver in hopes of finding his way onto the playing field. He previously spent five months working as a running back with Kansas City.
But he made little progress and was considered a long shot at playing for the Jags in 2025. Rees-Zammit had missed the last five practices with a lower back injury.
He was part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, which is designed to give players from other countries a chance. NFL teams can have up to 16 players on their practice squad and get an extra spot for a player from the Pathway Program. Rees-Zammit spent all of last season on Jacksonville's practice squad.
Practice squad players work the same amount as guys on the 53-man roster, but they don't get paid as much and would need to be promoted to the active roster to play in a game.
It was an opportunity to practice with the team while essentially waiting for an injury to open up a roster spot. For Rees-Zammit, it gave one of the best wingers in rugby for years an opportunity to pursue his dream of playing American football in the NFL.
His father's 'first love of sport' was American football, and the then-Washington Redskins were their team. But making the leap across the Atlantic and into the NFL was never something that everyone back home understood.

Micah Parsons' dad once named Chiefs, Steelers, Lions as preferred trade destinations
With Micah Parsons officially requesting a trade from the Dallas Cowboys, an old clip of his father, Terrence Parsons, talking about preferred destinations for his son in a hypothetical trade scenario has resurfaced. During an appearance on the "Life in the Stands" podcast in December 2024, Parsons' dad stated that his preferred trade landing spots for the superstar edge rusher are the Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Detroit Lions. "I know Pittsburgh fans are like, 'whoa,' but I'm sorry, him [Micah Parsons] and [T.J.] Watt together would be like cheating," Terrence Parsons said. "Him and [Aidan] Hutchinson together in Detroit would be like cheating. I love it. Kansas City, that's who they are right now." Parsons requested a trade out of Dallas due to the franchise's lack of communication with his agent. The 26-year-old's relationship with the Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones seems to be completely destroyed. Dallas has no plans of trading Parsons, but if they can't agree on a long-term extension with him, they may be forced to move him at some point. Parsons' father's landing spots for the four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher are bold. Adding Parsons to Kansas City's defense would be lethal, while pairing the disgruntled Cowboy with Watt or Hutchinson in Detroit would also be pretty much unstoppable. However, none of the teams Parsons' dad listed as preferred spots have the money to sign Parsons to a record-breaking extension. The Chiefs are slated to have negative $61 million in cap space next offseason, and the Steelers already have two expensive edge rushers in Watt and Alex Highsmith. As for the Lions, the team must prioritize getting an extension done with Hutchinson first, which likely takes them out of the running for Parsons. It's possible that Parsons lands with one of three destinations his dad spoke about during a podcast appearance last year, as all three franchises are playoff contenders, and two are legitimate Super Bowl contenders in Kansas City and Detroit. However, it remains to be seen whether any have the money to sign Parsons to a new deal after trading valuable picks for him while also keeping their core together. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jhoan Duran's wife almost cried when the closer told her he might have to surrender his No. 59 uniform number when he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. The number has plenty of sentimental value to Duran. Ornamental value, too — the number is engraved as part of the family pool design in the Dominican Republic. Aidra Duran can save her tears. Duran got to keep his number and wore his new Phillies uniform for the start of a three-game series against Detroit. But as far as potentially unhappy wives go, someone might have to check on Michele Thomson. Rob Thomson's first call to the bullpen with Duran came when the reliever wanted to check on the availability of No. 59, which belonged to the Phillies manager. There was no high-end bargaining needed — like when former Phillies great John Kruk once traded No. 29 to new reliever Mitch Williams for two cases of beer. Thomson happily gave up the number to Duran and the former long-time New York Yankees coach took No. 49 in honor of former Yankees star Ron Guidry. 'The only one that's upset at this point is my wife,' Thomson said to laughter. 'All her merchandise has 59 on it. Now she has to go buy new stuff.' Duran said he tried to be respectful in his first talk with Thomson about wanting the number. Thomson, who led the Phillies to three straight playoff appearances, had no issue giving it to the closer. 'The number really doesn't mean much to me,' Thomson said.
