Company owner fined RM10,000 for cheating school PTA in Butterworth
Judge Zulhazmi Abdullah ruled that Mohd Khairudin Ali Amran, 40, must serve five months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
The accused deceived the PTA of a local school by submitting a quotation for six 65-inch Philips Smart TVs but only supplying four units.
The offence occurred on May 26, 2023, at the school premises. Charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, Mohd Khairudin could have faced up to five years in prison, a fine, or both if convicted.
During mitigation, the unrepresented accused informed the court of his financial responsibilities, including supporting his wife, two children—one with a disability—and his mother. Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Azura Zulkiflee represented the prosecution.

Four-day remand for man who went back to crime scene to retrieve slippers
BALIK PULAU: A 21-year-old man has been remanded for four days to assist in an investigation into an alleged house trespass involving the residence of a TikTok influencer. The remand order was issued this morning by magistrate Chia Huey Ting. Earlier, the suspect, was brought to the Balik Pulau Court Complex at around 9.05am. He kept his head down as he walked. It was reported that a man, who broke into a house in Batu Maung yesterday, was caught after he returned to the scene to retrieve items he had left behind. The matter came to light in a viral video posted on the Facebook account "Amigos Media Viral". Southwest police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam told the New Straits Times today that the suspect had gone back to the house to retrieve his slippers. Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had entered the home through the back door while the domestic helper was outside disposing of rubbish. Upon realising the presence of the TikTok influencer, the suspect fled the scene. However, he later returned to the house to collect belongings he had left behind. It was then that the complainant and several friends managed to apprehend the suspect and handed him over to members of a patrol unit on duty in Batu Maung. The case is being investigated under Section 448 of the Penal Code for house trespass, which carries a maximum jail term of three years, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both.

Two men get six months' jail each for electricity theft in Miri
MIRI: Two men have been sentenced to six months' jail each for stealing electricity to power cryptocurrency mining operations. Sim Khiok Leng, 62, changed his plea to guilty during case management at the Sessions Court on Tuesday (Aug 5), where he was charged under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance (Chapter 50). According to the facts of the case, Sim and an unnamed woman had rented a commercial unit at Eastwood Valley Industrial Park for mining cryptocurrency. During an inspection by the Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation (Sesco) on Dec 16 last year, officers discovered 29 cryptocurrency mining machines connected directly to the main wiring, bypassing the electricity meter. Deputy public prosecutor Ronald Felix Hardin told the court that Sim had been held at Lambir Prison since June 26 after breaching bail conditions. Taking into account Sim's age and health, the court ordered his six-month sentence to begin from that date. In a separate case, Hii King Lee, 49, also changed his plea to guilty after discharging his lawyer. He had rented a house at Jalan Jati 2D, Taman Desa Senadin, since November last year. On Dec 17, Sesco officers, acting on intelligence, found five mining machines at the property running on illegally tapped electricity. Hii is already serving two six-month sentences for similar offences in Miri and Siburan, handed down in July. Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman sentenced him to another six months, effective immediately. All the seized mining equipment has been ordered forfeited to Sesco for disposal. The proceedings were attended by enforcement officers from the Sarawak Utility and Telecommunication Ministry and Sesco's Investigation Unit.

Power theft: Man fined RM21,000

Kota Kinabalu: A 58-year-old man was fined a total of RM21,000 for two counts of using electricity that bypasses the meter terminals, causing the Sabah Electricity to undercharge and incur losses. Voo Hen Sang @ Tonny pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan, to both charges against him, Monday. On the first count, Voo was fined RM1,000 or 14 days' jail for dishonestly using electricity through the installation of a black bypass cable connected to the terminal of meter number 99178340 on the red phase. On the second count, he was ordered to pay another RM20,000 fine or spend five months in prison for fraudulently using electricity through the installation of a blue bypass cable connected to the terminal of meter number 98992844 on the red and blue phases. The charges stated the offences committed by Voo had caused the Sabah Electricity to undercharge and incur losses. He committed the offences on Feb 24, this year, at 4.40pm and 8pm at Kg Kauluan in Tamparuli.
