Delhi CM announces special month-long cleanliness drive from Aug 1
CM Gupta said that special programmes under the 'Freedom from Garbage' campaign would be held every Saturday and Sunday throughout August.
Alongside wide publicity through multiple channels, a dedicated online portal will allow residents to upload 'before and after' photographs of cleaned sites to showcase their contribution, she said.
The Chief Minister announced that on July 29, a major meeting would be held at the Civic Centre, where ministers, MPs, councillors and association representatives would finalise responsibilities.
The Chief Minister appealed to the citizens of Delhi to actively participate and help make the city clean and hygienic.
She said that to ensure the campaign is carried out effectively, all departments of the Delhi government will contribute.
The drive will also involve Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), market associations, school and college students, and other institutions. To encourage public participation, a dedicated online portal will be launched.
On Friday, the CM held a meeting to review preparations for the 'Delhi's Freedom from Garbage – Cleanliness Drive'.
The meeting was attended by Urban Development and Education Minister Ashish Sood, Chief Secretary Dharmendra, and senior officials from the Urban Development Department, PWD, Delhi Municipal Corporation, NDMC, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and other key departments.
CM Gupta stated that August is celebrated as the month of India's Independence, and the government has resolved that this August, Delhi will achieve 'freedom from garbage'.
She added that with extensive public participation and strong inter-departmental coordination, the campaign would be implemented so effectively that citizens would truly feel the capital has achieved 'freedom from garbage'.
The campaign will place particular focus on schools, government offices and hospitals, with targeted efforts to clear long-accumulated waste and unused items from storerooms.
It will also cover vegetable and fruit markets, industrial areas, bus terminals and depots.
All ministers of the Delhi government, MLAs, MPs and municipal councillors will participate in the campaign and run initiatives to increase citizen involvement.
The Chief Minister stated that particular attention would be given to slum areas, unauthorised colonies and informal settlements, ensuring that a significantly higher volume of waste is collected and disposed of compared to normal days.

GUWAHATI: The Paresh Baruah-led United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) and the Yung Aung faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) have called for the boycott of the Independence Day. In a joint statement, the two insurgent groups said this 'so-called' celebration of freedom holds no significance for the indigenous people of Western South East Asia (WESEA) – region straddling parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur. The outfits said the highlight of their protest on August 15 would be a total bandh in WESEA. They appealed to people to extend their support to make the bandh successful. The ULFA-I and the NSCN's Wung Aung faction call for the boycott of India's Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations every year. But despite the boycott call, people go out in large numbers to take part in the celebrations.

Rameswaram fishermen began an indefinite strike condemning frequent arrests from Monday. A unanimous decision was taken by members at the All Mechanised Fishermen Consultation meeting held here on Sunday. As part of the strike, the fishermen on August 13 would stage a protest at Thangachimadam. Following that, on the day of Independence Day, August 15, they would observe a one-day hunger strike protest. On August 19, from 3 p.m. onwards, they would go on a rail roko till the arrested fishermen were released, said the resolution of the meeting. Jesu Raja, one of the fishermen leaders, said that post-fishing ban period, about seven mechanised boats and one country boat were seized by the Sri Lankan Navy. The 57 fishermen on board the boats were arrested and lodged in prisons, he added. As already the families and associations were demanding the Union government to initiate a diplomatic negotiation to release the 24 convicted fishermen and the boats that were detained by the Sri Lankan government, the fresh arrests had renewed the fear of the entire community, he noted. 'The repeated arrests and attacks against the fishermen from Tamil Nadu had even made us think about discontinuing fishing job. Why should anyone work and earn money at the cost of their own lives,' he asked. Though several plans were chalked out to address the face-off between the fishermen of the two countries in the international waters, the confrontation was yet to be resolved, he said. 'The only plausible way is to hold diplomatic talks and arrive at a solution to end the confusions pertaining to the ownership of Katchatheevu island and matters surrounding it,' he stated. However, he said the fishermen and their families, unlike previous times, were not going to give up their protests to the false promises of the governments.
