Kookaburras cruise to fourth straight Pro League win
In a week where they had already twice defeated India 3-2 in Antwerp, the Australians proved too strong on Tuesday night against the bottom-placed Europeans, winning 6-1.
The defending champions surged up to second in the standings after their fourth straight win, sitting on 21 points from their 11 matches, trailing only the Netherlands (32) and sitting just above Argentina (20), with games in hand on both.
Up 2-1 at halftime, thanks to Jeremy Hayward's 123rd career goal and a Blake Govers penalty stroke, the Aussies scored three times in a blistering third quarter to put the contest beyond doubt en route to their biggest win of the season.
"They knocked off Belgium yesterday, and we knew they would've wanted to come out hard and get another win so I'm proud of the boys to come out the way they did and put on a good performance," Cooper Burns said.
Burns was joined on the scoresheet after the main break by Connar Otterbach, his maiden international goal, and Jack Welch, while Govers got his second.
The two sides face off again at the same venue on Wednesday (11.30pm AEST) before heading to London for back-to-back contests against England.
"We will make a few tweaks, we'll take a look at what we can do better and we know Ireland will come out strong again, they'll want to win and play hard hockey so we'll come back with a plan and we'll stick to that," Cooper added.

Match suspended after star rushed to hospital after suffering horror injury
An English cricket star was rushed to hospital with a horror injury as a Hundred match was suspended. Adam Hose suffered a serious ankle injury while playing for the Trent Rockets in their win over Southern Brave, The Sun reports. As Hose attempted to field a ball just inside the boundary rope, his right leg slipped underneath as his body weight came down on top. The impact saw his ankle become dislocated which saw him instantly grab his leg and be left in excruciating pain. A screen was put around him as he received treatment from medical staff on the field. He was then loaded into an ambulance and rushed to hospital for further treatment. Despite Hose's setback, the Rockets rallied to beat Brave by four wickets. But they now face a lengthy period of time without Hose in the side. It can take anywhere between six and 12 weeks to recover from a dislocated ankle. Scans need to determine whether Hose requires surgery, which could rule him out for an even longer period of time. Fans were quick to send their best wishes to Hose. One said: 'I have never seen an injury like that in a cricket game.' Another declared: 'Get well soon Adam.' One noted: 'One of the most horrific injuries I've seen on a cricket field.' Another added: 'This is absolutely mad, hope he recovers.' The Hundred's official account also tweeted: 'We wish Adam Hose a speedy recovery after an injury to his leg in the field.'

‘Pretty sick': New national record for Australian middle-distance star
Rising middle-distance star Claudia Hollingsworth has smashed the Australian 800-metre record in a clear statement of intent a month out from the world athletics championships in Tokyo. The 20-year-old Victorian stopped the clock at one minute 57.67 seconds in a red-hot women's 800m won by Britain's Olympic champ Keely Hodgkinson at the Diamond League meet in Silesia. High jumper Nicola Olyslagers and pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall recorded podium finishes, but the standout performance came from Hollingsworth, who consigned Catriona Bisset's previous Australian mark of 1:57.78 to history. 'It's pretty sick,' said an elated Hollingsworth. 'To come down the home straight and not be sure but to look up at the big screen and see it was really exciting. 'To share it with Abbey [Caldwell] and Catriona was so special, having three Aussies in a race like this is awesome. 'I got into this mentality that they are quick races now and if you want it to be quick, you have to be in it to win it. 'I'm trying to be more aggressive and try different ways of racing leading into Tokyo because those heats are going to be quick leading into the semis and hopefully the final.'
