MP: Sex racket busted in Jabalpur, five arrested
Jabalpur: Amid ongoing crackdown against sex rackets, Jabalpur district police raided a hotel located in a posh area of the city, busted a sex racket, and arrested five persons on Thursday.
An official said that the raid was conducted at Hotel Velvet Inn, located under the jurisdiction of Lordganaj police.
During the search, which was carried out in the presence of police officers, three women and a man (customer) were found in different rooms and arrested on the spot.
Another police team arrested the hotel owner, Pradeep Mishra, at his residence, a senior police official said.
Police officials said that raids were conducted following a credible input received about sex rackets operating in the hotel Velvet Inn.
Initially, hotel staff tried to mislead the police during the search; however, they later cooperated.
"Inputs were received regarding an illegal sex racket being operated in the hotel Velvet Inn. Following this, a team was formed involving women cops, and a search operation was carried out. A total of five persons have been arrested. Further investigation is underway," a police official said.
He said that the accused have been booked under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, and other relevant charges of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
'The women arrested from hotel rooms are aged between 30 and 35 years. The man (customer) arrested has been identified as Jeevan Pandey, a local resident. They are being interrogated,' an official said.
He said that the raid was part of the ongoing operation against sex rackets operating in Jabalpur district.
Last week, a local BJP leader, Atul Chaurasia, was arrested in Jabalpur after a sex racket was busted in a hotel owned by him.
Following his arrest, the BJP has removed him from the party's primary membership.

The now-viral confrontation saw the doctor asking Mamata Banerjee to name a single major industry that had come to Bengal during her tenure. The question triggered such chaos that university security was forced to intervene. Bandyopadhyay, a British passport holder with his origin in South Kolkata, was later released by the police. However, with the duo's detention, the BJP accused the Mamata Banerjee-led government of using the police to "muzzle dissent" and "criminalise symbolic gestures". In a post on X, the saffron party's state unit posted raised concern over the "alarming" situation in Bengal, where 'even a Union Minister is denied the basic courtesy of meeting a respected doctor! What could be a more shocking example of lawlessness and political vendetta!' As Majumdar's convoy neared the doctor's residence, police intercepted it and allegedly claimed that Bandyopadhyay was "not at home". "But the truth is, the doctor was very much at home and waited for over an hour to meet Dr. Sukanta Majumdar," the BJP stated. The doctor later stepped out of the residential complex and met the West Bengal BJP chief on the side of the road. Their interaction was cut short by the police, who detained both of them without "giving any reason", the party said. While being escorted into a police van, Majumdar told reporters, "For what reason have we been detained? I have no clue. Nowhere in the world does something like this happen." Meanwhile, after being released, Bandyopadhyay spoke to reporters as well and said, "Is this the way to treat a British citizen? What crime have I committed? Is it a crime to meet a Union minister in Bengal? The police need to answer on what grounds I was picked up like a criminal." The BJP state unit said that this was a "clear demonstration" of CM Mamata Banerjee "wants to silence every voice being raised". BJP leader Sourav Sikdar described the detention as nothing short of "state-sponsored goondaism". "They are scared of a doctor who asked questions and a minister who came to meet him. The state is weaponizing the police," he claimed. Meanwhile, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress defended the police's action and accused the BJP of "stage-managing provocations". "The BJP is creating deliberate provocations in sensitive areas. The doctor in question has a track record of inciting controversies. The police acted in accordance with law to ensure peace," said TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.

Attempt to smuggle wildlife from Thailand foiled at Bengaluru airport, one held
Custom officials at the Kempegowda International Airport have foiled an attempt to smuggle 54 green iguanas, one common spotted cuscus, and two greenfinch birds packed in the check-in luggage on a flight from Bangkok to Bengaluru. The sleuths on Thursday arrested the accused passenger, identified as Ahmed Jasim, a native of Tamil Nadu, as soon as he landed and tried to get the bag cleared. The seized wildlife have been quarantined and sent back to Thailand on Friday, the officials said. The accused was booked under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, they added. He has been remanded in judicial custody. Ahmed had concealed the wildlife in carton boxes packed along with chocolates and biscuits, and other snacks, officials said. The sleuths said that the accused is a mule and was directed to hand over the check-in luggage to people waiting outside after getting confirmation of the code word.

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar detained twice in a day; BJP slams 'repressive' Mamata government
KOLKATA: Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar on Friday alleged that he was obstructed by the police twice in a row on the same day. Dr Majumdar accused Kolkata Police of resisting BJP's attempts to observe 'Pashchimbanga Divas' by trying to stop a two-wheeler rally led by him from reaching Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's residence on Elgin Road in south Kolkata. Later, he was stopped again while on his way to meet a doctor at the latter's residence in the Bhowanipur area. When the doctor, identified as Rajat Subhra Banerjee, went down the road to meet the Union Minister, he was also picked up in a police car. Both were detained and taken to Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters. Protesting 'the repressive behaviour of the autocratic Mamata Banerjee Government', the state BJP has called for blockades, demonstrations, and movements in every district centre today and tomorrow. Notably, Dr Rajat Subhra Banerjee had last year asked a few questions to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during an interaction at Kellogg College in London regarding the present situation in West Bengal. According to political observers, the incident had put the state government in an awkward position.
