ROME - Italian firefighters on Aug 10 tackled a wildfire on the flanks of Mount Vesuvius, with all hiking routes up the volcano near Naples closed to tourists.
The national fire service said it had 12 teams on the ground and six Canadair planes fighting the blaze, which has torn through the national park in southern Italy since Aug 8.
Reinforcement firefighters were on their way from other regions and the onsite teams were using drones to better monitor the spread of the fire, the service said on Telegram.
'For safety reasons and... to facilitate firefighting and cleanup operations in the affected areas, all activities along the Vesuvius National Park trail network are suspended until further notice,' the park said in a statement on Aug 9.
Nearly 620,000 people visited the volcano's crater in 2024, according to the park.
The smoke from the fire could be seen from the Pompeii archeological site, which remained open to tourists however.
Experts say European countries are becoming ever more vulnerable to wildfires due to intensifying summer heatwaves linked to global warming. AFP

Sudden, heavy rain in Indian Kashmir leaves 46 dead, more than 200 missing

The incident occurred in Chasoti town of Kishtwar district, a stopover point on a popular pilgrimage route. It comes a little over a week after a heavy flood and mudslide engulfed an entire village in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand. The flood washed away a community kitchen and a security post set up in the village, a pit stop along the pilgrimage route to the Machail Mata temple, said one of the officials, who declined to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media about the incident. "A large number of pilgrims had gathered for lunch and they were washed away," the official said. The Machail yatra is a popular pilgrimage to the high altitude Himalayan shrine of Machail Mata, one of the manifestations of Goddess Durga, and pilgrims trek to the temple from Chasoti, where the road for vehicles ends. "The news is grim and accurate, verified information from the area hit by the cloudburst is slow in arriving," Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of India's federal territory of Jammu and Kashmir, said in a post on X. Television footage showed pilgrims crying in fear as water flooded the village. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. "Army, air force teams have also been activated. Search and rescue operations are underway," Kumar said. A cloudburst, according to the Indian Meteorological Department, is a sudden, intense downpour of over 100 mm (4 inches) of rain in just one hour that can trigger sudden floods, landslides, and devastation, especially in mountainous regions during the monsoon. The local weather office in Srinagar predicted intense showers for several regions in Kashmir on Thursday, including Kishtwar, asking residents to stay away from loose structures, electric poles and old trees as there was a possibility of mudslides and flash floods. Airbnb lets US guests defer payments until closer to check-in

WASHINGTON – Airbnb is letting guests in the US reserve some trips without paying upfront, an effort to win over budget-conscious travelers who may be reluctant to book in advance. The feature, called 'Reserve Now, Pay Later,' is available for US-based rental listings that have a flexible or moderate cancellation policy, the company said in a statement Aug 1 3. Guests do not need to pay the full amount until eight days before the end of the listing's free cancellation period, it said. The option is not a loan and doesn't require credit checks or interest, it added. This is the latest flexible payment option the online travel company has added in recent years to appeal to travelers who may be holding out on making reservations, particularly if they're on a budget or coordinating group trips. Airbnb said the new feature could help US-based hosts get more reservations, after it warned last week of moderating gains through the remainder of the year. The North American business has been a drag on overall bookings growth, which rose 7.4 per cent in the second quarter and would have seen a double-digit increase excluding the region, Airbnb said. The company already offers the option for guests to pay for a portion of their reservation and the rest until closer to check-in. It also allows customers to pay by installments through the buy-now-pay-later service Klarna Group Plc. BLOOMBERG
