Security forces seize over two tonne of explosives stolen by Maoists in Odisha
Security forces have traced over 2.5 tonne of explosives stolen by Maoists from a quarry in Sundargarh district of Odisha on May 27.
The explosives, along with Maoist uniforms and other materials, were seized during a combing operation on the Gandhamardhan Hill range on the Balangir-Bargarh district boundary. The search was conducted jointly by the Special Operation Group (a security force raised to combat Left-wing extremists in Odisha), the CRPF, the Jharkhand Jaguars, and the District Voluntary Force.
The Sundargarh district police, which announced the seizure of 2.5 tonne of explosives on Monday, did not confirm if the entire stock of stolen explosives have been found.
On May 27, a van brought 200 packets of explosives to the Banko Stone Quarry in Sundargarh district. While the explosives were being unloaded, a group of armed men reached there, threatened the driver, took the van into a nearby forest and made away with all the explosives, say the Odisha police.
'Soon after the incident, a preliminary enquiry suggested the involvement of naxals active in the Saranda forest under West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand,' said the police.
Fearing that the stolen explosives could be used for subversive activities, Director-General of Police Y.B. Khurania rushed to Sundargarh district to assess the situation. A team from the National Investigation Agency also looked into the incident. Subsequently, a combing operation was launched.

700 kg of explosives looted by Maoists recovered from Saranda forest
Bhubaneswar: The security forces have recovered 700 kilograms of explosive materials from the Saranda forest located near the Odisha-Jharkhand border, a week after 4 tonnes of industrial explosives were looted by Maoists. A senior police official of Rourkela said the recovery was made during an intensive combing operation on Wednesday, days after a large cache of explosives was looted by Maoists in Sundargarh district. The joint operation carried out by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Special Operations Group (SOG), and the CoBRA unit recovered the explosives in dense forest. Earlier, the security forces had recovered 2.5 tonnes of explosives in the Saranda forest on Monday. With this recovery, the total quantity of explosives confiscated has climbed to nearly 3.2 tonnes out of the 4 tonnes looted by Maoists on May 28. On May 27, eight armed Maoists had hijacked around 4 tonnes of gelatin from a truck from near a forested stone quarry at Banko of Sundargarh district in Odisha and drove the vehicle to a nearby forest where they unloaded the explosives and allowed the truck driver to go. The truck driver told the police that another 10-15 persons waiting inside the forest then looted at least 150 packets of explosives each weighing 15 to 25 kg. Police have arrested the owner of the explosive warehouse from where the explosives were on their way to the stone quarry and the driver who drove the truck. Police said the owner has two explosive licences including one in the name of his wife and owns a warehouse at the remote Itma in Bargaon block of Sundargarh district. On May 27, three trucks carrying explosives came out of the warehouse. One of the trucks was looted by Maoists while the owner kept the other two trucks hidden and lied to police that the explosives were delivered to clients. Police said over 25,000 pieces of gelatin sticks, 400 detonators and 22,500 metres of detonating fuse wires were seized from the vehicles. Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani said the accused failed to produce any valid document for the explosives. Agarwal kept the trucks hidden with the intention to sell the explosives later at a higher cost.

Trucks with explosives seized in Odisha; warehouse owner, driver held
ROURKELA: Two days after seizing a couple of mini-trucks laden with blasting explosives, RN Pali police arrested the explosives warehouse owner and his driver and produced them in court on Tuesday. The arrest of Shraban Agarwal (41) and his driver Birsa Samad (30) comes after the two explosives-laden trucks were found parked outside a fuel station at Deogaon near Balughat on June 1. Police said Agarwal has two explosive licences including one in the name of his wife and owns a warehouse at the remote Itma in Bargaon block of Sundargarh district. On May 27, three trucks carrying explosives had come out of the warehouse. One of the trucks was looted by Maoists from K Balang area. Agarwal kept the other two trucks hidden and lied to police that the explosives were delivered to clients. Police said around 23,000 pieces of gelatin sticks, 400 detonators and 22,500 metres of detonating fuse wires were seized from one vehicle. Seizure from the other truck included 3,750 metre wires, 2,718 gelatin sticks and 30 packets of detonators. One of the trucks was driven by Agarwal himself. He along with his driver parked the two trucks outside Rourkela Fuel Filling Station at Deogaon on May 30. Two days later, locals informed the police about the parked vehicles. Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani said the accused failed to produce any valid document for the explosives. Agarwal kept the trucks hidden with the intention to sell the explosives later at a higher cost. So far, Agarwal's link with Maoists has not come to notice. On May 27 morning, Maoists had hijacked an explosives-laden truck from near a stone quarry at Banko within K Balang police limits. They took the vehicle to the nearby forest and unloaded the explosives. Later, the ultras carried the explosives to Saranda forest in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. On May 30, the security forces of Odisha and Jharkhand recovered a portion of the looted explosives after an exchange of fire with the Maoists at Tirilposh inside Saranda forest. Subsequently on Monday, the forces recovered about 2.5 tonne of looted explosives from Saranda.
