Two-goal hero Cole Palmer says Chelsea silenced doubters with Club World Cup win
Victory, which landed the Blues a jackpot in excess of £90million, was also a tactical triumph for manager Enzo Maresca.
Asked about how the team is developing under the Italian, Palmer told DAZN: 'He's building something special, something important with a young team.
'Everyone's talked a lot of s*** about us all season, but I feel like we're going in the right direction.'
Reflecting on the game, Palmer added: 'Obviously it's a great feeling, even better because everyone doubted us before the game. We knew that and to go out there and put a fight on like we did against a great team, yes, it's good.
'The gaffer put a great gameplan out. Obviously he knew where the space was going to be and he tried to free me up as much as possible, and I just had to repay him and score some goals.'
Palmer – whose double and assist all came within the space of 21 first-half minutes – was also the decisive player as Chelsea beat Real Betis in the Europa Conference League final in May.

Maresca said: 'These are the games where we expect Cole to appear – big games and big moments – and once again he showed how good he is.'
The tournament itself has been controversial and derided in many quarters but Maresca is in no doubt of the prestige it will bring the club.
As well as the significant prize money, Chelsea will be entitled to wear a badge on their shirts confirming their status as world champions for the next four years.
Maresca said: 'I think it will become as important as the Champions League and we value it as much as winning the Champions League.
'It has been the (best) effort from the team and all the players. I am very happy, especially for them because they deserve the moment.
'Had you told me we were going to win 3-0 in the first half I wouldn't have expected that but we knew we were going to put up a fight and we knew our squad is really competitive against talented teams.'

PSG's misery was complete five minutes from time when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair.
Frustration was also evident as scuffles broke out after the final whistle.
PSG manager Luis Enrique became involved in one incident that ended with Pedro on the ground.
Enrique said: 'I saw Maresca had pushed others (away) and we had to separate all the players.
'This is a situation we must all avoid. My intention is that I wanted to separate the footballers so the situation didn't become worse.'

Liverpool transfer news: Reds make Alexander Isak decision as talks continue for wonderkid
Liverpool have been one of the busiest Premier League teams in the transfer window after already securing six signings but they want even more quality added to their squad in hopes of retaining the title Liverpool are really going for it in this window. They've already spent over £170million on the likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz, but they're not satisfied there. The Reds are eager to hold on to their Premier League crown after dominating the 2024-25 season and Arne Slot is keen to bring in as many quality options as possible to help them do that. Liverpool are looking for a new forward to compete with Luis Diaz up front and complement an already impressive attacking front four featuring Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa. Slot already has two excellent playmaking options in Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai but Liverpool have signalled that they are ready to potentially sanction another huge transfer to further bolster the Dutchman's squad. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the biggest Liverpool transfer news and gossip. Reds mull over Isak bid Liverpool are in a tricky spot as they look to bring in the quality striker that could take them to a totally different level across all fronts. It's clear Alexander Isak is their primary target, but it might be a move too ambitious, with Newcastle desperate not to lose a player who scored them 27 goals last season and led them to the Carabao Cup. Liverpool could have to spend as much as £125m if they are to sign Isak - which would mean smashing their transfer record once again. Newcastle have been adamant the Sweden star is not for sale and they have have been attempting to tie him down to a new deal. He currently has three years left on his contract, so the Magpies will be in no rush to sell. However, Liverpool would be willing to press ahead with a bid for Isak - so long as they receive encouragement from Newcastle that they are willing to do business - according to the Daily Mail. It's understood Isak is happy to stay at St James' Park after Newcastle won a trophy and secured Champions League football last season. Liverpool make Ekitike approach It's only understandable that Liverpool are making contingency plans in like likely event that their ambitious plans to sign Isak fails. While Newcastle are also keen on Hugo Ekitike and want to pair him with Isak, they've had a £70m bid rejected - and now Liverpool are reportedly hoping to snap him up as an alternative to Isak. Liverpool have made an official approach to Eintracht Frankfurt over Ekitike's signature, as reported by Sky Sports, as the Reds look to wrap up their plans for a new forward as quickly as possible. It's believed Frankfurt value the player at closer to £85m and he would resemble a much cheaper option than Isak. The Frenchman scored 22 goals in all competitions for Frankfurt last season and has amassed plenty of interest from top teams across Europe. Talks ongoing for Salford wonderkid Liverpool have made a total of six signings so far in this transfer window and could be set for a seventh before we even reach the middle of July. While bids for Isak and Ekitike drag on, Liverpool are locked in talks with Salford City over wonderkid striker Will Wright. The 17-year-old is highly rated, with both Arsenal and Manchester City believed to be looking at the youngster too. Talks remain ongoing, according to the Liverpool Echo, with a possible fee of £300,000 being mooted - though it is expected that the Reds are likely to pay less. Salford are co-owned by Manchester United legends Gary Neville and David Beckham, who had a fierce rivalry with Liverpool during their footballing careers.

Man Utd transfer news: Marcus Rashford 'doesn't deserve' move as Brighton star holds talks
Marcus Rashford is looking for a way out of Manchester United with Barcelona his ideal destination whilst Jadon Sancho is edging closer to the exit door, but the club will have to accept a hefty loss Manchester United's summer still has a lot of moving parts to it with the club hoping to secure some major arrivals whilst some big names will be looking to depart. Matheus Cunha remains their only signing but Ruben Amorim will hope that Bryan Mbeumo joins him sooner rather than later whilst more attacking additions could be made after that. In terms of outs, several big earners are looking to end their spells in Manchester. Marcus Rashford 's future has been a major talking point - he is one of a number of loan exits who are now back. Jadon Sancho and Antony are in similar boats and look poised to leave the club. Alejandro Garnacho is another player seeking pastures new after his snub in the Europa League final. His antics have angered Amorim and the club are looking to cash in with the Argentine potentially commanding a hefty fee. Here's the latest news from the Red Devils. Rashford 'doesn't deserve' Barca move Rashford has been told that "doesn't get the move" from Manchester to Barcelona by Teddy Sheringham, who claims the forward isn't worthy of such a switch. The United academy graduate is tipped to leave Old Trafford this summer after falling out of favour under Amorim. The Spanish giants are considering a swoop for the United man having missed out on some of their other targets this summer. Nico Williams chose to remain at Athletic Bilbao whilst Liverpool are determined not to sell Luis Diaz, so they are running out of options, but Sheringham has not been impressed with his conduct He told Sky Bet: 'If you assess where Marcus Rashford is at as a professional footballer, you strive as a youngster to get to the very top and play for clubs like Manchester United, and when you're there, you appreciate it. You don't throw it away and say you want to leave. "I hope Rashford doesn't get the move that he's hankering for. From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that's a step up that he hasn't deserved.' Sancho's cut-price move United have accepted that they will have no choice but to accept a fee of less than £25m from Juventus if they want to offload Jadon Sancho this summer. The Italian giants have refused to meet the Red Devils' asking price, leaving them to accept a considerably low offer. Sancho is not part of United's plans under Amorim and is in search of pastures new despite joining the club four years ago for more than £70m with many tipping him to be a huge success. The former Borussia Dortmund winger is in the final year of his contract and spent last season on loan at Chelsea, before they chose to pay a penalty fee to prevent his move to Stamford Bridge becoming permanent. Juventus are now looking to seize on the unfortunate situation by adding Sancho on the cheap. Brighton star on radar The Red Devils have held talks with the camp of Brighton star Pervis Estupinan with the club interested in signing the full-back, who is also drawing interest from AC Milan this summer. Amorim only added Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in January and the summer has seen the arrival of teenage star Diego Leon, but they still want players in that area. Brighton have already signed Maxim De Cuyper from Club Brugge this summer and as a result could be open to offers for Ecuador international, who has two years remaining on his contract at the Amex. Estupinan has told the Seagulls he is open to a new challenge this summer and talkSPORT claim United have held discussions with the player's camp. He was recently away on international duty this summer and revealed to El Canal Del Futbol that Brighton had given him freedom to make a decision. Penalty rebounds 'could be SCRAPPED for 2026 World Cup' in radical shake-up...as VAR powers also 'face major expansion'
Penalty rebounds could be scrapped entirely under dramatic new plans being considered by football's law-makers - potentially coming into force in time for the 2026 World Cup. The proposal, being discussed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), would see any missed penalty immediately result in a goal-kick, with no chance for the taker or others to score on the rebound, as reported by The Sun. That means iconic moments like Harry Kane 's extra-time rebound against Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-final or Xabi Alonso 's equaliser in Liverpool 's legendary 2005 Champions League comeback would no longer stand under the proposed rules. The idea is to treat a penalty as a single, standalone shot - much like a penalty stroke in hockey. Once the kick is taken, play would stop. If the ball goes in, it's a goal and the game restarts at the halfway line. If it doesn't, it's a goal-kick for the defending side - no corners, no second chances. Officials believe it could help eliminate disputes over encroachment and remove an unfair advantage for the attacking team. Currently, goalkeepers must have one foot on or behind the line, while attackers can pounce on rebounds, which some argue is a double punishment for defenders. The potential law change is being considered as part of a wider review aimed at modernising the game, particularly ahead of the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2026. Any new rules would need to be finalised by the end of February to be introduced in time. Also on the table are plans to expand the scope of VAR. IFAB is looking at allowing video checks for second yellow cards and corners — but only when there's a 'unfair' dismissals or 'clear error' that can be reviewed quickly, without further delays to the game. Discussions over rules changed were during the recent Club World Cup in the US - with some senior figures now backing significant reform.
