I Used MindStudio AI to Help With Research. It Was Remarkably Handy

CNETa day ago

The most taxing thing about being a journalist, apart from the job insecurity, is all the required reading. Working on a piece means reading through stacks of articles, studies and other reports just to paint a full picture for readers. Even then, you'll invariably miss things that'll immediately be pointed out in the comment section. However, AI can help streamline research and reduce missteps.
As an AI reporter, I'm constantly being sent pitches about the latest AI wares from companies the average person hasn't heard of. Most don't seem particularly useful for the average person, but speaking with Dmitry Shapiro, a former product manager at Google and current CEO of MindStudio, and seeing a video he posted on LinkedIn for his Do Your Research AI agent, made me want to give it a try.
AI is increasingly becoming the go-to tool for reporters, researchers and students. Its ability to synthesize nearly the entire trove of human knowledge and give a bespoke output to any question saves time that would have otherwise been dedicated to cross-referencing material. At the same time, there's a worry that relying too heavily on AI systems atrophies the human mind, making it less capable of problem-solving and critical thinking. Despite this, people, companies and universities are all in on offloading the arduous task of human analysis to neural networks. In some cases, AI can greatly outperform human output, doing 1 billion years of doctoral research in one year.
On the other hand, AI can make grave mistakes, such as telling businesses to break the law. While AI optimists say that the tech will maximize human potential in a fraction of the time, there's worry about the effects of the workforce being supplanted by AI systems and whether society is ready to deal with the potential of mass layoffs. Despite the concerns, AI is here, everyone is using it, and only the most useful tools will survive.
In concept, Do Your Research seems like a godsend for reporting. In practice, it's good overall, but it has some issues that need fixing.
For example, in researching the changes to Twitter's moderation policies after Elon Musk's takeover, Do Your Research did a great job painting a history of all the changes the Tesla CEO made and how it immediately led to an increase in hate speech on the platform. It also highlighted the externalities to Musk's abrupt firings and moderation changes, including an advertiser revolt and an exodus of customers, backed by actual data. The conclusion also gave a position -- I hadn't asked for one, but it shows that the tool can connect all the facts presented.
Per my spot checks, the data that Do Your Research presented was accurate and backed up with correct sources. However, I wish that factoids could be hyperlinked directly to sources, like Wikipedia.
If you're a student, you'll want to be careful with copying and pasting directly from Do Your Research. Upon checking with a plagiarism detection site, Do Your Research's text came up as 20% plagiarized. Unsurprisingly, AI detection tools dinged Do Your Research as 46% AI-generated, which is pretty low considering it's 100% AI-generated.

The thing I like about Do Your Research over ChatGPT and Gemini is the way it breaks down different points into subheads and tacks on a full list of sources at the bottom. While the other chatbots do this too, Do Your Research lists it out like a detailed bibliography. Given that AI systems can get things wrong, easily being able to go back to the actual source immediately is handy.
Perplexity has a function called Pages that works similarly to Do Your Research. In my tests, the writing read much more like a human and was at a level I'd deem publishable. The sourcing was also well detailed and correctly documented. Granted, Pages was immediately dinged by plagiarism checking tools as more than 93% plagiarized. It's a criticism Perplexity has received in the past. It also explains why Perplexity reads so much better than other AI-generated content.
Do Your Research does need further optimization. A single run of the model can take minutes to compile. In my case, it would fail about 40% of the time. Obviously, these instances are annoying, and it requires more time to rerun the model. After about five successful Do Your Research reports, I ran out of the $5 in token credits allotted to me by MindStudio for my press account. Tokens are essentially the amount of output the AI model can generate before the customer will need to pull out a credit card.
Is Do Your Research worth your time and investment? Yes. It's an incredibly handy tool that does a fantastic job of grabbing various bits of information and collecting it all into an article-like package. The output isn't good enough to be publishable, as its text can read as anodyne and lacking in personality. However, it's a strong jumping-off point to help expand your own research and reporting.

Colorado terror attack took place at 'Run for Their Lives' event calling for release of all hostages in Gaza

Colorado police responded to a terror attack at an event calling for the release of hostages in Gaza in the Denver suburb of Boulder on Sunday, which left multiple people injured. Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said his department received reports early Sunday afternoon of a man with a weapon and people being set on fire on Pearl Street. A male suspect with minor injuries was taken into police custody at the scene, Redfearn said. "Run for Their Lives," which was hosting an event in Boulder on Sunday, organizes run and walk events calling for the immediate release of all hostages being held captive by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The police chief could not confirm whether the pro-Israel event attendees were targeted as there were people not affiliated with the group out in the area, but he said "this act is unacceptable." "The movement started by a group of Israelis in the Bay Area in California, in collaboration with the Hostage and Missing Families Forum (#BringThemHomeNow)," the group's website states. "But, local events are independently led by dedicated and committed leaders within their communities." "You don't need to be Jewish or Israeli to be disturbed by this crisis—all people around the world should be," the website says. "Innocent children, women, the elderly, and young people should not be living in tunnels 20 meters underground for over a year—they should be in their homes with their families. Until this crisis is resolved, the world risks normalizing this unbearable situation. Our focus is not on the "how" (pressure world leaders or military pressure). We are solely focused on the 'what': doing everything possible to bring them home!" Fox News Digital has reached out to the group. Boulder's Jewish Community said that an incendiary device was thrown at walkers participating in the event. "We are saddened and heartbroken to learn that an incendiary device was thrown at walkers at the Run for Their Lives walk on Pearl Street as they were raising awareness for the hostages still held in Gaza," Boulder's Jewish Community said in a statement. "We don't have all the details of what is unfolding, and we promise to keep our community informed. "Our hearts go out to those who witnessed this horrible attack, and prayers for a speedy recovery to those who were injured," the statement continued. Witnesses at the scene told CBS Colorado that an unidentified suspect used Molotov cocktails to attack people who were participating in a walk. "We are aware of reports of an attack at today's Boulder Run for Their Lives event - a weekly meeting of Jewish community members to run/walk in support of the hostages kidnapped on 10/7," the Anti-Defamation League wrote on X. A motive for the attack has not been determined, the chief said. "I cannot confirm right now that this was targeted at a specific group of people," Redfearn said. "We understand that there's a lot of tensions right now and a lot of issues in the United States and everywhere. Once we have a clear motive, we will react accordingly." Redfearn stopped short of calling Sunday's event a terror attack, despite proclamations from FBI Director Kash Patel and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as other political leaders.

Pickens bounces back

Follow our coverage of the WCWS from Oklahoma City as the five remaining teams chase the softball national title Imagn Images B8 - UCLA 4, Tennessee 4 Nice and easy inning for Karlyn Pickens in 1-2-3 fashion, and the Vols will have a chance to walk it off against the Bruins. With everything we've seen in this game (and the week in general), who knows how this game will finish. T8 - UCLA 4, Tennessee 4 What a sequence. On top of the home run/not a home run, the seventh inning was wild. The Vols get a runner to second base with one out in the bottom half, but McKenna Gibson lines a shot to UCLA third baseman Jordan Woolery, and Woolery doubles up pinch-runner Katie Taylor off second base. Wow. And we go to extra innings. What a moment for Megan Grant. She missed home plate and was assisted, but apparently that play is not reviewable. So we spent 15 minutes waiting for THAT? What an embarrassing moment and unfortunate situation for the sport. Make a call. One way or the other. This shouldn't be taking so long. You're hurting the game. You're hurting the sport. You're hurting both of these teams. This is such a mess. Be better. This can't be overturned if it's taking this long. Something has to be done about reviews taking this long. If it's not clear, this can't be overturned. My goodness, hurry up. Did Megan Grant not touch the plate? They're reviewing this. If she's out, this will be BRUTAL. T7 - Tennessee 4, UCLA 4 Jordan Woolery gets on with a two-out single, and Megan Grant comes through with a two-run home run, and we're all tied again. Wow, what a moment. This incredible WCWS just keeps delivering. T7 - Tennessee 4, UCLA 2 Here we go. The Bruins have one more chance to keep this game -- and their season -- alive against Tennessee pitcher Karlyn Pickens. Karlyn Pickens is so talented and dynamic in the circle. She has allowed seven hits and walked three, but she has allowed just two earned runs through six innings. And she has seven strikeouts. Pickens is just so much fun to watch. Imagn Images I've loved the action in Oklahoma City for the Women's College World Series, but these games are taking forever to play. It shouldn't take three hours to play seven innings of softball but we're seeing that quite a bit this week. Way too many delays. Way too many long reviews. Imagn Images T6 - Tennessee 4, UCLA 2 The Vols are six outs from a win and a spot in the national semifinals. What a huge moment for Taylor Pannell. She has been the star of this game with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Now Tennessee turns everything over to Karlyn Pickens. Imagn Images B5 - Tennessee 4, UCLA 2 And now the Vols have the lead after a two-run home run by Taylor Pannell. This game has been just like the rest of this week: so much drama and so much fun. B5 - UCLA 2, Tennessee 2 Huge strikeout for Karlyn Pickens to get out of a jam in the top of the fifth after UCLA had two hits and got another runner on base with a walk. We're still tied. Watching Pickens and Kaitlyn Terry work their way through these lineups is so much fun. B4 - UCLA 2, Tennessee 2 Karlyn Pickens again walks one but doesn't allow anything else. She has four strikeouts through four innings and is now in control of this game. T4 - UCLA 2, Tennessee 2 The two starting pitchers are really starting to take control of this game. UCLA's Kaitlyn Terry with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the third with two strikeouts. That was impressive. Imagn Images B3 - UCLA 2, Tennessee 2 Much easier inning for Tennessee's Karlyn Pickens. She did walk one but didn't allow a hit, and the Vols head back to bat with a chance to take the lead. It feels like we're settling into a fun game here in this elimination game. Kaitlyn Terry got some help from her defense in that second inning. Look at this play by UCLA second baseman Savannah Pola. Imagn Images T3 - UCLA 2, Tennessee 2 Kaitlyn Terry gives up one single in the bottom of the second inning, but she had a much cleaner inning than the first and keeps the Vols off the scoreboard. Headed to the third tied at 2. T2 - UCLA 2, Tennessee 2 So it didn't take long for the Bruins to match the Vols' two runs and pull even. Sofia Mujica adds a solo home run, and UCLA is right back in this game. It's the first time Karlyn Pickens has allowed two home runs in a single inning this season. WOW.

Freshman Ryder Woodson's grand slam sparks 10-run inning for N.C. State in 17-12 win over Stetson

AUBURN, Ala. — Freshman Ryder Woodson's go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning highlighted N.C. State's 10-run eighth inning in a 17-12 victory over Stetson on Sunday in an elimination game at the Auburn Regional. Woodson drove a pitch deep to left center field that bounced off the bleacher covering back onto the field. Woodson raced to third as Stetson played the ball but the hit was ruled a home run, Woodson's third of the regional and second of the game. He did not have a home run in 20 games played during the regular season.
