Kudumbashree's ‘Jana Galsa' to give tribal art forms a new lease of life
Jana Galsa, which means people's celebration in the Paniya tribal language, is intended to transform indigenous art forms into viable enterprises that can ensure livelihood for the tribal people and bring them income. It will be used as a medium for public awareness campaigns and even integrated into school curricula.
The first phase of the project involves creation of a comprehensive directory of tribal art forms and artistes across the State through a survey, to be conducted through animators who belong to the Scheduled Tribes. The survey is expected to be completed by August 20.
The Kudumbashree plans to set up a State-level consortium that incorporates the art forms that have been revitalised and transform them into models that can generate better employment and income.
The project also aims at using the tribal arts forms for bring about changes in the curricula. Steps will be taken in association with the General Education department to include tribal art, culture, rituals and traditions, and indigenous cuisine into the curriculum to make the younger generation aware of their lives.
The initiative will also be linked to anti-drug campaigns and other social awareness drives. The Kudumbashree's theatre group Rangashree, along with cultural tourism centres, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, Kerala Institute for Research Training and Development Studies of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (KIRTADS), and the Folklore Academy will also support the project.

This Kerala woman weaves her dreams into fashion
From the heart of Edappal, a town in Malappuram district of Kerala, a dream has blossomed into a reality as Aswathy Balakrishnan etches her name in the world of bridal fashion designing. With a vision to weave magic on fabric, Aswathy embarked on her journey in 2023 by setting up a studio, Avaanah, in a rented room with an investment of ₹6 lakh she secured through a loan. From a modest start with just two assistants, her designs quickly captured the hearts of hundreds of brides. Today, Avaanah is synonymous with exquisite bridal wear. Her bridal dresses are sought after in countries like Australia, the U.K., the U.S.A, the UAE and Ireland. With materials sourced from northern India, Aswathy's designer creations like lehengas, gowns and sarees are priced between ₹10,000 and ₹50,000. Her traditional Christian bridal dresses are particularly popular abroad. As Aswathy looks back on her journey, she beams with pride. She has not only built a successful brand, but also created opportunities for many and inspired others to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. Her confidence received a major boost from early clients like playback singers Sithara Krishnakumar, Mridula Warrier, Rimi Tomy, actors Sneha Sreekumar, Shruthi Rajanikanth and Veena Nandakumar. Hailing from Thaikkattussery near Thrissur, Aswathy's journey into fashion designing was fuelled by her innate passion for art. She pursued a diploma in fashion designing and nurtured her creative talent beyond her Zoology and Malayalam academic background. However, it was only after her marriage and relocation to Edappal that she discovered her niche in bridal designing, marking the beginning of her journey with Avaanah. She praised the Taluk Industries Centre and the Kudumbashree for their supportive roles. 'They provided consistent encouragement, clear guidance and helped in easy facilitation of loans,' she says. Aswathy's experience serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring entrepreneurs who often face bureaucratic hurdles. She debunks the myth that government aid is only limited to joint or small ventures. The District Industries Centre, she says, provides valuable guidance to start-up aspirants. 'Women should seize this opportunity,' she advises aspiring female entrepreneurs. Her inspiring story was recently shared at an interaction with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during the State government's fourth anniversary celebrations at Malappuram.

ITFoK 2026 to be held from January 25 to February 1
The 16th edition of the International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFoK) will take place from January 25 to February 1, 2026. The announcement was made by Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian during the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi awards ceremony recently. Renowned theatre director and educator Abhilash Pillai has been appointed as the Festival Director for ITFoK 2026. This marks his fourth term in the role, having previously led the festival in 2009, 2010, and 2017. A distinguished figure in Indian theatre, Mr. Pillai has held leadership roles in several festivals both in India and abroad. A graduate of the School of Drama, Thrissur, he pursued his post-graduation from the National School of Drama, Delhi, and advanced theatre studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA), London. He also received specialised training from leading directors at London's prestigious Orange Tree Theatre. He currently serves as the Director of the School of Drama and Fine Arts, Thrissur. He is also a recipient of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award and several other accolades. Joining Mr. Pillai in the festival directorate are Anamika Haksar (Acclaimed director and theatre activist); Ruwanthie de Chickera (Sri Lankan theatre director); Sreejith Ramanan and M.G. Jyotish (notable Malayalam theatre practitioners and educators). To further elevate the artistic and curatorial standards of the festival, a high-profile advisory committee has been constituted with senior theatre persons Ratan Thiyam, M.K. Raina, Anuradha Kapur and Prof. B. Ananthakrishnan. Akademi secretary Karivellur Murali said that preparations for the 2026 edition are already under way, guided by the vision and expertise of this newly formed team.

Sangeetha Nataka Akademi all set to open its own bookstall
Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi's long-standing dream of establishing a dedicated bookstall is finally getting realised. Minister for Culture Saji Cherian is scheduled to inaugurate the bookstall on the Akademi premises on Monday. The first publication of the Akademi was Venkitta Ramanīyam, authored by Ennapadam Venkita Rama Bhagavatar during Kavalam Narayana Panicker's tenure in 1964, six years after it was found. Despite bringing out 78 books over the years, spanning various streams of performing arts, the Akademi never had a dedicated space for book sales until now. The Akademi's books have until now been sold only through the Akademi office, its programmes, and online channels. The new bookstall will give scholars, students, and art lovers a single, year-round venue to purchase the Akademi's authoritative publications on music, theatre, and allied art forms. Alongside existing titles, eight new publications are in the pipeline, including the Malayalam translation of Indian Method of Acting by renowned theatre director Prasanna, a comprehensive history of the Akademi itself, and the complete Malayalam translation of Bertolt Brecht's plays. The bookstall will also stock Keli, the Akademi's monthly journal, Kerala's only dedicated arts periodical, as well as offer discounts ranging from 20% to 50% on books. Minister for Higher Education R. Bindu will also attend the inaugural ceremony.
