Mass. RMV sees "extremely high demand" ahead of Real ID deadline. Why it may be OK to wait.
Owen Gallagher, a Watertown resident, arrived at the RMV after receiving multiple notifications and seeing media coverage about the looming cutoff.
"I knew I had to come down here and I'm just in time," he said.
But after a 30-minute wait, he was turned away. Real ID applications, he learned, are by appointment only.
"They were saying we can only help you on, I think it's two weeks from now," he said.
No need to rush to RMV
For those still without a Real ID, Massachusetts Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie has a message: Don't panic.
If you already have another form of federally accepted ID, like a valid U.S. passport, military ID, or DHS Trusted Traveler card, you don't need to rush to the RMV this week.
"We have extremely high demand," Ogilvie said. "So if you're not up for renewal and you have no travel planned or you have an active passport, wait."
A TSA spokesperson told WBZ-TV it has plan in place, and will be pulling air passengers out of line who do not have a Real ID by the deadline.
Be prepared for Real ID appointment
Ogilvie also emphasized the importance of being prepared.
Real ID applications require more documentation than a standard driver's license: proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate or passport, two documents proving Massachusetts residency, and a document displaying your Social Security number.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem told Congress that 81% of Americans are already Real ID compliant, and she expects the May 7 rollout to have minimal impact on most travelers.
"We will make sure that it is as seamless as possible," said Noem.
For now, RMV officials urge residents to check their current ID status, plan ahead and avoid unnecessary waits, especially if they already have acceptable documentation for upcoming travel.

Southwest Teasing Major 'Getaways' Announcement August 19
This year, Southwest Airlines has been implementing some major changes, with another one coming August 19. Some of the new initiatives, like ending the "Bags Fly Free" and unassigned seating policies, have not gone over well with customers. Early returns on the shuttering of several direct flights are not positive either. Other programs seem to be faring better, including the airline's new recent partnership with Priceline. This brings us to Getaways by Southwest, which will be fully unveiled on National Aviation Day, which is Tuesday, August 19. The news about the Getaways program isn't fresh; Southwest actually announced it last September. However, all of the details and destinations will be out Tuesday. Southwest has been teasing the launch of Getaways by Southwest on Instagram over the last few days. What is Getaways by Southwest? Getaways by Southwest officially brings Southwest's vacation service in-house. Previously, the operations for Southwest Vacations were outsourced to Apple Leisure Group. Six markets-- Las Vegas, Orlando, Hawaii, Cancun, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay--have already been announced. "Getaways will launch with 30+ markets, including popular locations like Las Vegas, Orlando, Hawaii, Cancun, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay," says the official Southwest website. "Confirmed partnerships include casino-hotel Caesars Entertainment, and all-inclusive brands Playa Hotels & Resorts and Sandos Hotels & Resorts, with more to come." What the service offers Southwest executive vice president of transformation Ryan Green told Travel Weekly last September that Getaways by Southwest will offer a variety of benefits, including the ability to purchase packages using Rapid Rewards points. Each customer will get two free checked bags, the ability to make changes to their flight up to 10 minutes before and the ability to cancel up to 10 minutes before and still receive a travel credit. "It will be very friendly and flexible," Green said. Southwest will also have direct partnerships with hotels and ground transportation, opening the door for more potential customer rewards. Southwest Airlines' "Bags Fly Free" policy may not be dead yet, but it's only going to be available under one condition. For decades, Southwest was known for its popular declaration that each passenger was entitled to two free checked bags. When that rule was abolished earlier this year, it unsurprisingly sparked backlash. Now, "Bags Fly Free" is coming back--but only if you're booking a trip under Southwest's new in-house vacation service, Getaways by Southwest, which is set to launch on Tuesday. Customers using the service to travel will have access to several perks, including two free bags. "With packing flexibility (every Customer on the booking gets two free checked bags—weight and size limits apply), change flexibility (make changes up to 10 minutes before your flight), and cancel for credit flexibility (cancel up to 10 minutes before your flight and receive a vacation travel credit), it's never been easier to getaway," the official Getaways by Southwest website says. What is Getaways by Southwest? Announced last fall, Getaways by Southwest is the budget airline's first-ever proprietary vacation booking service. Previously, customers could access Southwest Vacations through Apple Leisure Group. Full details will be out on Tuesday, but several destinations and partnerships have already been announced. How has removing "Bags Fly Free" affected Southwest? Under its new policy, Southwest passengers can check their first bag for $35 and a second for $45. In addition to drawing the ire of longtime customers, eliminating "Bags Fly Free" had some unintended consequences for the airline. Instead of paying to check their luggage, fliers instead began bringing carry-ons, which led to some awkward situations. "We're seeing Southwest Airlines gate agents require checking bags early, when there's still plenty of overhead bin space left. They've given up the advantage of not having to gate check bags, right at the same time they're facing a lot of pressure to reduce the amount of time it takes to board so that planes spend less time on the ground and more time in the air generating revenue," travel insider View From the Wing wrote earlier this month.
