New RMV center in Milford promises faster service, more space
The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles recently announced that it's moving its Milford service center, effective later this month. Starting Monday, June 23, the Milford RMV will operate from a 9,176-square-foot office at 138 South Main St., according to a community announcement. All appointments and road tests scheduled for that date or later will take place there. The current Milford RMV office, which will soon close, is at 14 Beach St. 'As we continue working to enhance the customers' experience at our service centers, the Milford relocation is one of three scheduled relocations planned for this year,' said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie, in a statement. The new location includes several updates to enhance safety, accessibility and customer experience, according to the announcement. There are 17 customer service counters, as well as a separate business-to-business area for commercial customers. Other upgrades include the addition of an employee wellness room and real-time indoor air quality monitoring. 'So much to celebrate': Mass. Mass. RMV sees "extremely high demand" ahead of Real ID deadline. Why it may be OK to wait.
As the May 7 deadline approaches for new federal travel identification requirements, Massachusetts RMVs are seeing a surge of last-minute visitors hoping to secure their Real ID credentials. But for many, the process isn't as straightforward as expected. Owen Gallagher, a Watertown resident, arrived at the RMV after receiving multiple notifications and seeing media coverage about the looming cutoff. "I knew I had to come down here and I'm just in time," he said. But after a 30-minute wait, he was turned away. Real ID applications, he learned, are by appointment only. "They were saying we can only help you on, I think it's two weeks from now," he said. No need to rush to RMV For those still without a Real ID, Massachusetts Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie has a message: Don't panic. If you already have another form of federally accepted ID, like a valid U.S. passport, military ID, or DHS Trusted Traveler card, you don't need to rush to the RMV this week. "We have extremely high demand," Ogilvie said. "So if you're not up for renewal and you have no travel planned or you have an active passport, wait." A TSA spokesperson told WBZ-TV it has plan in place, and will be pulling air passengers out of line who do not have a Real ID by the deadline. Be prepared for Real ID appointment Ogilvie also emphasized the importance of being prepared. Real ID applications require more documentation than a standard driver's license: proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate or passport, two documents proving Massachusetts residency, and a document displaying your Social Security number. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem told Congress that 81% of Americans are already Real ID compliant, and she expects the May 7 rollout to have minimal impact on most travelers. "We will make sure that it is as seamless as possible," said Noem. For now, RMV officials urge residents to check their current ID status, plan ahead and avoid unnecessary waits, especially if they already have acceptable documentation for upcoming travel.

As deadline nears, RMV now taking Real ID walk-ins
BOSTON (SHNS) – The Registry of Motor Vehicles is seeing more and more people trying to get a Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card ahead of next month's deadline and announced Tuesday that it is now accepting walk-in appointments for people who need the Real ID for imminent travel plans. Starting May 7, standard licenses or ID cards that are not federal Real ID-compliant will no longer be accepted as identification for domestic air travel or entering federal buildings and nuclear power plants. People 18 and older without Real IDs will need to present a passport along with their license or ID card. Compliant Mass. IDs feature a white star inside a yellow circle in the top right corner of the card. Most of the 3.1 million Bay Staters who already have a Real ID-compliant identification got theirs after making an appointment in advance at either an RMV location or AAA branches. But Tuesday, the RMV said it is now accepting walk-ins at all service centers for people 'who do not have valid form of federally acceptable ID and have travel plans scheduled in the near future.' The RMV said anyone who walks in looking to complete a Real ID transaction will either be assisted then, or RMV staff will try to find the person a time slot later that day or within 'the next several days.' 'We are increasing our capacity at our service centers, and we are also accepting walk-ins for individuals who have imminent travel plans that require a REAL ID,' Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie said. 'Meanwhile, we urge everyone to become familiar with the required documentation, so they know what they need to bring with them when applying for the REAL ID.' Customers must bring proof of lawful presence (U.S. passport, birth certificate, naturalization certificate, etc.), two ways to prove Massachusetts residency (current driver's license, state-issued credentials, tax bills, etc.), and proof of a full Social Security Number (Social Security card, W-2 with full Social Security number printed on it, etc.) to obtain a Real ID. The RMV said anyone who does not have imminent travel plans but wants to obtain a Real ID-compliant identification should make an appointment online either with the RMV or a AAA branch. Officials stressed that Real ID applications will continue to be processed once the May 7 enforcement deadline passes. The state is also monitoring the possibility that the federal government phases in enforcement of the long-discussed ID update. Massachusetts has offered Real ID-compliant licenses and IDs since 2018, and about 56% of the valid credentials here were Real ID-compliant as of March, a take-up rate that lags most other states, Ogilvie told lawmakers that month. Massachusetts RMV offers walk-in appointments for REAL IDs
BOSTON (WPRI) — If you live in Massachusetts and still don't have a REAL ID, the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is now offering walk-in appointments at all branches. Starting May 7, TSA and federal security will no longer accept non-REAL ID cards and licenses as proof of identity. Every U.S. traveler over 18 must be REAL ID compliant. Passports can still be used at the airport, but the TSA said having a REAL ID will be the most convenient option. The new ID meets the federal standard and is characterized by a star emblem placed on the top right corner of the license. Are you REAL ID ready? What to know before this year's deadline The RMV said if a customer walks in to get a REAL ID and cannot be immediately helped, staff will see if there's another time available that day or in the days that follow. 'As we get closer to May 7, we are very pleased to see more and more residents coming in for a REAL ID-compliant credential. For those who haven't, there is no need to panic. Up to and beyond May 7, the Registry will continue to process REAL ID transactions,' Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie said. The REAL ID Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2005 in response to the security concerns raised by the 9/11 attacks. The law aims to make identification documents more secure and reliable. Originally, the Department of Homeland Security required everyone to switch by 2020, but the deadline was pushed back due to the pandemic. Need a Real ID? Massachusetts RMV is now taking walk-in appointments.
The RMV in Massachusetts is now taking walk-in appointments at all of its service centers for residents to get a Real ID, with less than a month to go before an important federal deadline. Starting May 7, you will need a Real ID-compliant driver's license, ID or valid passport in order to fly domestically in the United States. More than three million people in Massachusetts have already obtained their Real IDs . "As we get closer to May 7, we are very pleased to see more and more residents coming in for a REAL ID-compliant credential. For those who haven't, there is no need to panic," Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie said in a statement. "We are increasing our capacity at our service centers, and we are also accepting walk-ins for individuals who have imminent travel plans that require a REAL ID." If a walk-in customer to the RMV can't be seen immediately, an employee will help them schedule another time slot later in the day or in the near future. Appointments will continue to be offered up to and after the May 7 deadline. The RMV says most customers just need to show four documents proving their lawful presence in the United States, their Social Security number and Massachusetts residency. To prove lawful presence in the U.S., applicants can show a passport or birth certificate. Proof of a Social Security number can be satisfied with a Social Security Card, W-2 tax form, or pay stub that displays the numbers. And to prove Massachusetts residency, a current driver's license, government-issued mail or credit card statement would suffice. Click here for a full list of acceptable documents. The Transportation Security Administration website says "on May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities." A Real ID has a star in the top right corner of the card. Does that mean travelers will be turned away at airport security next month if they don't have a Real ID or passport? Not necessarily, Ogilvie indicated recently, as federal officials have planned to start with a "phased enforcement" approach. "What we've heard from our Transportation Security Administration partners over the last several months is that they would not do any hard stop of somebody that didn't have a Real ID, government-issued document upon travel on May 7," Ogilvie told lawmakers. She said TSA agents might ask those people to show additional identification, or give them information about getting a Real ID if they don't have a passport. "We don't think there's going to be a hard stop," Ogilvie said.
