Faced online abuse for years, but rape threats are a new low: Actor Ramya
Actor-politician Ramya has slammed fans of Kannada star Darshan for harassment on social media. On Monday (July 28, 2025), Ramya lodged a complaint with the Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru, against fans for online abuse. A couple of days before her complaint, Ramya had shared news reports regarding Supreme Court proceedings in the murder case of Renukaswamy, in which Darshan is one of the accused persons. The actor spoke to The Hindu about being threatened by the fans, who also sent her 'obnoxious' messages on social media. Excerpts: Online abuse of female actors is growing at an alarming rate... Trolling and abusing female actors have become common because people aren't speaking openly about it. Most women fear character assassination. They are not comfortable with the abuses they receive. Our self-respect and dignity are given importance in society because, as women, that's how we have been raised. If women had the courage in the past to take the legal route, perhaps we wouldn't be facing such a serious situation today. For how long have you been receiving offensive messages online? I have faced online abuse for years, but nobody had ever said 'I want to murder you or rape you'. That's what these fans are sending me now. People have called me a slut or a whore. I have gotten used to these kinds of comments, and that's the sad part. Unfortunately, I have become immune to it. Imagine the trauma women carry by facing constant abuse online. A couple of years ago, fans of two stars were targeting each other, and they commented badly about the children of one of the stars. I found it disgusting, and I put out the screenshots of those uncivilised messages on social media to expose these fans. The stars should have stepped in to bring some sense to their respective fans. Darshan should have said he doesn't like such behaviour from his fans. Maybe then, the Renukaswamy incident might not have happened. He (Renukaswamy) was your fan, and this is the kind of behaviour you have encouraged. What made you take a stand against Darshan in the Renukaswamy murder case? Most women cannot afford legal fees in such battles. They can't afford to put themselves out in public because they have a family to take care. They have confided this to me. Fortunately, I am in a position of privilege; I have been a former MP. I have been in politics, so I have the contacts and the support. I don't want to deny that. That said, if I don't use that privilege for something meaningful, I am letting down other women. ALSO READ:Actor Ramya reacts to Darshan row: No one is above the law Should stars advise fans to be socially responsible? In the past, so many actors had registered fan clubs. Those clubs used to conduct blood donation camps and involve themselves in philanthropy. However, fan wars have become the norm now. This is why I am upset at those who remain silent about trolls and abuses. You think these fans are faceless and can't go beyond their so-called bravado online, but they are actually capable of going on the roads and beating people who speak against their favourite stars.

‘Hari Hara Veera Mallu' box office: Pawan Kalyan's film mints ₹9.25 crore on Day 3 after sharp drop in earnings
Telugu star Pawan Kalyan's historical epic, Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1, hasn't had the opening fans of the star were hoping for. The film, released on Thursday, earned ₹9.25 crore on Saturday, bringing the total to ₹64.75 crore. According to Sacnilk, the film opened to ₹34.75 crore on Thursday, after minting ₹12.75 crore from preview shows on Wednesday. However, due to unfavourable reviews and calls for a boycott due to a political controversy, the film saw a 76.98 per cent drop in collections on Friday, earning only ₹8 crores. Trade reports suggest that Sunday (July 27) wouldn't be much different either. Directed by Jyothi Krishna and Krish Jagarlamudi, the historical action drama revolves around the titular character, Veera Mallu, a rebellious outlaw. Bobby Deol essays the role of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the antagonist in the movie. Niddhi Agerwal is the female lead. Anupam Kher, Jisshu Sengupta, Nargis Fakhri, M Nassar, Sunil, Raghu Babu, Subbaraju and Nora Fatehi are the other actors in the movie. The film features music by Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani, with Manoj Paramahamsa serving as the cinematographer. Veteran Thota Tharani is the art director of the movie. Hari Hara Veera Mallu is produced by AM Rathnam under his Mega Sura Production banner. The Hindu's review of the film reads, 'The first half drags along, saved occasionally by M.M. Keeravani's music. While the story feels patchy, a couple of action scenes show Veera Mallu's knack for stealing diamonds and standing up for the oppressed. A wrestling sequence highlights Pawan Kalyan's martial arts background, and his past as a stunt choreographer adds value to the 18-minute pre-climax action stretch. But everything in between feels flat.'

At Mr Ong in Park Hyatt, try mee goreng, mantou buns and bean curd cheesecake
In the plush calmness of a luxury hotel, replicating the energy of a hawker stall from Singapore might seem challenging, but not impossible. Mr Ong - The Flavours of Singapore by Park Hyatt has orderly outdoor seating by a serene lily pond, but also has an open kitchen where the chefs are hard at work over flaming woks, grills and a bar, and upbeat music playing over speakers. While the restaurant threw open its doors post-pandemic with a menu focussed on Singaporean cuisine, a menu refresh less than a month ago means there is now a bevy of dishes from Singaporean, Malaysian, Vietnamese and Indonesian cuisine. 'While we began with the intent of bringing authentic Singaporean flavours to Chennai, the menu now focusses on South-East Asian cuisine. Our vision was to replicate a hawker-stall style atmosphere and menu here; something rare in a luxury hotel setting,' says Pragit Parameswaran, marketing communications manager, Park Hyatt, Chennai Chef Balaji Natarajan says there is much he is excited about in their new menu. 'We have mushroom stuffed mantou buns shaped like a mushroom, a delicate lace turmeric roti jala that is served with a chicken or a pumpkin curry, and a bean curd cheesecake made of silken tofu and cream cheese,' he says. 'We use a lot of fresh turmeric, both large chillies as well as the smaller bird's eye chillies, as well as ingredients native to these regions including torch ginger flowers we get from Malaysia in our cooking,' he explains. We begin our meal with the satay ayam, and dip our well marinated chicken skewers into some thick and sweet peanut sauce. Warm bowls of comforting malacca laksa follow, with noodles, chicken pieces, prawns and a jammy egg drenched in a coconutty soup. The mushroom shaped pillowy cendawan baos are generously stuffed with minced mushrooms tossed in chilli oil. For the main course, we opt for a true hawker favourite, greasy and flavourful mee goreng or wok tossed noodles that come packed with vegetables and mushrooms. The caramel banana crunchy peanut ice cream for dessert comes with an array of fixings, from honey brittle and nuts to a caramel sauce you can drizzle on your scoop. As diners get to experience the new menu, there are more popups in store at Mr Ong, as well as a sober bar being planned, to function alongside its regular bar for the non-drinkers to have a good variety of options as well. A selection of dishes from Mr Ong's new menu will also feature as a part of a set menu to be made available during Singa60, from August 1 to 10. Organized by Hindu Tamil Thisai in collaboration with The Hindu and Business Line, Singa60 offers a rich tapestry of events showcasing vibrant partnerships between India and Singapore through a curated program centered on Commerce, Culture, and Cuisine. The set menu at Mr Ong for Singa60 is priced at ₹3,000 plus taxes for a non-vegetarian meal and ₹2,600 for a vegetarian meal. Mr Ong is at Park Hyatt, Velachery Road, Guindy.
