Hawaii downgrades tsunami warning
The earthquake sent shockwaves through Japan, Hawaii and the West Coast of the U.S. An advisory order remains in place for the islands, warning local residents to take heed of harsher winds and rip currents in the ocean.
'A tsunami is not just one wave. It's a series of powerful waves over a long period of time. Tsunamis cross the ocean at hundreds of miles an hour — as fast as a jet airplane — in deep water,' Dave Snider, tsunami warning coordinator with the National Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska, told The Associated Press.
'But when they get close to the shore, they slow down and start to pile up. And that's where that inundation problem becomes a little bit more possible there,' he added.
The Department of Transportation canceled all flights to and from Maui on Tuesday as Hilo International Airport was also closed and baggage operations at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport were temporarily suspended.
Although the Hawaii evacuation order has been lifted, authorities are encouraging those returning to remain vigilant.
'As you return home, still stay off the beach and stay out of the water,' said James Barros, administrator of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, per the AP.
Black Hawk helicopter crews were activated by Gov. Josh Green (D-Hawaii) to ensure vehicles were prepared to rescue any individuals caught in the water.
However, Hawaii was not the only U.S. state impacted by the Russian earthquake. Northern California saw waves up to 5.7 feet while water reached a foot above tide level in Alaska, the news wire reported.
Seattle also felt rougher currents due to the aftershock of the earthquake.
'Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way,' President Trump wrote late Tuesday in a post on Truth Social.

'We have one message for America,' one of the armed men says, before pulling the bag off one of the hostages, only to reveal a grinning tourist who gives a thumbs-up and says, 'Welcome to Afghanistan!' The video then cuts to male tourists diving into scenic lakes and walking through waterfalls, and even holding M4 rifles that are revealed to be replicas. Not every influencer sees Afghanistan in that way. In another video, YouTuber Nolan Saumure, whose channel Seal on Tour has 650,000 subscribers, acknowledges that he only interacted with men during his trip there. In a 35-minute video titled 'Afghanistan Has Too Much Testosterone,' Saumure spins the camera around to show a large crowd of Afghan men swarming him.

Tsunami Watch Issued for Hawaii, West Coast After 8.7 Earthquake Off Russia
Update (Wednesday, July 30th): Modest waves hit Hawaii and California yesterday and in the early hours of the morning, as a result of the earthquake off Russia. Evacuation orders have been lifted in Hawaii; in Southern California, the tsunami advisory has been lifted. See below for some of the wave action documented in Hawaii and California. On Tuesday, at 4:25pm PDT, an earthquake struck 80 miles off the Kamchatka Peninsula. The magnitude 8.7 quake, which reportedly struck at a depth of 46 miles off Russia, prompted tsunami warnings for Japan, Hawaii, Guam, Alaska, and the entire west coast. NOAA documented the quake, and issued the resulting tsunami warnings. According to an alert from the National Weather Service regarding Hawaii: A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. 7-Foot Tsunami Waves Strike Midway Atoll; Here's the Video
By now, the dust has settled, the seas have calmed, and the panic has dwindled, following Tuesday's magnitude 8.7 earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, and the resulting tsunami threats to most coastal regions along the Pacific Ocean. It was an historic moment, according to the experts, as it was one of the biggest tremors ever recorded, and millions of people were on notice for possible tsunamis. Fortunately, initial reports are showing that the damage from the quake and the waves was minimal. The epicenter was in a remote region of Russia, and the ensuing tsunamis were negligible. One spot that was hit the hardest, however, was Midway Atoll. Midway, perhaps most famous for an epic battle between the Japanese and American forces during World War II, is a remote region in the North Pacific about 1,300 miles from Hawaii. Sharing scenes from the ground on Midway during the recent tsunami, digital creator currently located on the atoll, Outside Nowhere, posted the above video. 'Today started like any other day on Midway Atoll,' Nowhere narrates, 'working and monitoring wildlife. When suddenly, at 2 o'clock, we got a tsunami warning…they told us to go home, pack a to-go bag, and meet at the Charlie Barracks, which is the tallest building on the island. Since the island is so low-lying, tsunamis are one of the biggest threats. This three-story building is one of our safest places on the island.'The inhabitants of Midway gather in the building with relative relaxed demeanor, given the situation. They watch from the windows as a reported 7-foot wave hits the shoreline. And then, afterwards, they assess the damage. 'The wave hit the beach with serious force,' Nowhere says. 'The shoreline was completely reshaped with logs, branches, marine debris scattered everywhere. Entire sections of beach have shifted. An insane amount of water. The craziest thing we found was a fish at least 100 yards from the water line, washed up by the wave.' While the damage was notable, it could've been worse.
