Mother of missing 7-month-old baby Emmanuel Haro, who said he was kidnapped, stops cooperating with investigators, officials say
The search for a missing 7-month-old baby in California continued on Tuesday, as his mother, who said he was kidnapped outside of a store last week, has stopped cooperating with investigators, according to authorities.
Rebecca Haro said her infant son, Emmanuel Haro, was kidnapped on the evening of Aug. 14 outside of a Big 5 retail store in Yucaipa, Calif., the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said.
Haro said she was changing Emmanuel's diaper outside her vehicle when a man assaulted her and knocked her unconscious, according to police. When she regained consciousness, she reported her son missing after she couldn't find him.
'I got him out of the car seat and I laid him down so I could get his diapers ready, and somebody said 'Hola' and that's all I remember, and I saw white,' Haro, with a bruise under her right eye that she says she got from the assault, recalled in tears to KABC-TV 'I fell on the floor, and I said as I got up, I couldn't find my son. I checked all around my truck, and I ran into Big 5, and I asked the lady if she saw a baby or someone with a baby. She said 'no.''
Deputies and K9 units from San Bernardino and Riverside counties responded at 7:47 p.m. local time on Aug. 14, but despite an extensive search, Emmanuel was not found, authorities said.
An Amber Alert wasn't issued after the alleged kidnapping because there were no suspect or vehicle descriptions. 'I'm begging you. If you know anything, please, I'm begging you to bring him back,' Haro told KCAL on Saturday, as she and family members were gathered in the parking lot of the Big 5 to hand out missing persons fliers.
Emmanuel weighs around 21 pounds and is 24 inches long, according to investigators. He has brown hair, brown eyes, is cross-eyed and was last seen wearing a black Nike onesie.
Here's what else we know so far about the case.
Inconsistencies in Rebecca Haro's statement
Investigators have interviewed multiple people, including Emmanuel's parents, Jake and Rebecca Haro.
'During those interviews, Rebecca was confronted with inconsistencies in her initial statement and declined to continue with the interview,' the sheriff's department said, adding that they can't rule out foul play in Emmanuel's disappearance.
Jake and Rebecca Haro have not been charged in connection with Emmanuel's disappearance.
Jake Haro has a past child cruelty conviction, records show
In 2018, Jake Haro and his former partner, Vanessa Avina, were charged with felony child cruelty, alleging the pair endangered a child under conditions likely to cause great bodily harm or death, according to Riverside County court records.
Haro pleaded guilty to the charge in 2023. He was placed on four years of felony probation and was ordered to serve 180 days in jail on a work-release program, KESQ reported.
Search of Haro's family home
Over the last few days, investigators have conducted several searches in Yucaipa, the location of the retail store where Emmanuel was reported missing, and Cabazon, the location of the Haro family home.
Investigators have served several search warrants at the Haro home and have used K9 units to help with the investigation. Authorities are also reviewing a large amount of surveillance video from the areas of interest.
The sheriff's department said: 'Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4904. Callers wishing to remain anonymous should contact We-Tip at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463) or go to wetip.com.'
The Haro family says they were in Yucaipa for a sports practice
KCAL and KTLA reported that Rebecca Haro was in Yucaipa, about 27 miles northwest of her home in Cabazon, for another child's football practice.
Haro reportedly told authorities that she left her husband and their two other children at the local park where the football practice was held to get a mouthguard for the child, with Emmanuel in tow.

Mystery of Missing Baby Emmanuel Haro Deepens as Mom's Story Faces Scrutiny
Rebecca Haro first reported that her 7-month-old son, Emmanuel Haro, had allegedly been kidnapped during the evening hours of August 14 from a Big 5 retail store parking lot in Yucaipa, California. However, with no leads in the case yet, investigators are still searching for the boy. 'I got him out of the car seat and I laid him down so I could get his diapers ready,' Haro told ABC 7 on August 15. 'Somebody said 'Hola' and that's all I remember. I saw white and I fell on the floor and I said as I got up that I couldn't find my son. I checked all around my truck and I ran into Big 5. I asked the lady if she saw a baby. She said no.' During Haro's initial interview, she stated that she had been changing Emmanuel's diaper outside of her car when an unknown male assaulted her and knocked her unconscious, according to an August 16 press release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. When Haro regained consciousness, Emmanuel was gone and she contacted the authorities who dispatched deputies and K9 units to the scene but were not able to locate the infant. 'Based on the circumstances, the Sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division responded and assisted with the investigation. Investigators interviewed multiple individuals, including Emmanuel's parents Jake and Rebecca Haro,' the press release continued. 'During those interviews, Rebecca was confronted with inconsistencies in her initial statement and declined to continue with the interview. At this point in the investigation, investigators are unable to rule out foul play in the disappearance of Emmanuel.' Clips of Haro's interview began circulating on TikTok and true crime enthusiasts have pounced on the case, with many saying they're skeptical that she's being truthful. 'Dry eyes. No tears. Almost sounds like Amber Heard saying she got stung by a bee… like wtf. I work with criminals and murders and some of the worst humans on the planet….. and I am telling you something is wrong. The story is not adding up,' wrote one social media user. However, investigators have not named any suspects or persons of interest in the case at the time of publication. As the search continues, authorities have encouraged anyone who believes they might have information to contact the Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4904. Solve the daily Crossword

Baby Emmanuel Haro has been missing for week: Trying to unravel the mystery
Baby Emmanuel Haro has been missing for a week, and there is growing desperation to unravel the mystery about what happened to him. Here us what we know so far: Emmanuel was reported missing Aug. 14 under suspicious circumstances after his mother said she was attacked and knocked unconscious outside a Big 5 store in Yucaipa, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department media press release. Sheriff's deputies arrived and searched the area but could not find Emmanuel. The boy was last seen wearing a black onesie, authorities said. Sheriff's officials did not disclose whether his mother, Rebecca Haro, had suffered any visible injuries during the attack. During her interview with detectives, officials said, she was confronted with inconsistencies from her initial statement and stopped speaking with investigators. The Sheriff's Department said it cannot rule out foul play in the case but has not named any suspects. Since then, authorities have searched the Cabazon home where the family lives and said that the parents have stopped cooperating with the investigation. The department has declined to answer direct questions. Over the weekend, investigators and police dogs searched the family home in Cabazon. The Sheriff's Department says it has served multiple search warrants at the home and is reviewing surveillance footage from areas of interest in the case. An attorney for the boy's father, Jake Haro, insisted the family is still cooperating, and Rebecca Haro only refused to take a polygraph when it was requested by law enforcement. Authorities said she gave contradictory statements, but Vincent Hughes, who is representing Jake Haro in a separate criminal case, said she was overcome with emotion because of her missing son. Hughes said law enforcement provided a 'vague statement' about Rebecca Haro's inconsistencies but has not elaborated or clarified that the parents are cooperating with the investigation. The Sheriff's Department has not issued a missing person flier, Hughes said, and has not provided Emmanuel's parents with any updates about the case. The couple surrendered their phones to investigators and allowed detectives to search their Cabazon home, Hughes said. Investigators also took two iPads, including one that had not been taken out of the box, and three Xbox video game consoles. Their vehicle was also taken by investigators as part of the search for their son, according to Hughes. In an interview with KTLA on Friday, Rebecca Haro, who had a black eye, pleaded for the return of her son. She said that she had planned to go to the Big 5 Sporting Goods store Thursday evening to buy a mouth guard for her older son. 'If you know anything, please come forward or take him to the cops,' she said. 'Please come and bring my son back. I'm begging you.' 'Whoever took my son, please return him,' Jake Haro told KTLA. 'We just want him back. We won't do anything to you. Just give us our son. Keep him safe, don't hurt him, make sure you feed him and change him.' According to court records, Jake Haro was convicted in June 2023 of willful child cruelty for an incident involving another child in Hemet. He's due to appear in court on Sept. 2 for a violation of his probation, and Hughes is defending him in that case. Jake Haro said he was giving the baby girl a bath in a kitchen sink and accidentally dropped her but a doctor's report said the girl's injuries did not fit that narrative. That case is separate and has no connection to the Haros' child missing, Hughes said. 'Jake has a criminal past,' Hughes said. 'We're not running from that, but the facts of that case are a lot different than the facts of this case. And one crime doesn't mean that you've committed every other crime known to man, especially to take your own child.' 'They just want their son back, they want people to put in the same effort that they're using to question them to go out and search for Emmanuel,' Hughes told The Times. Officials have offered few details. Authorities confirmed Wednesday that Riverside County child protective services removed a 2-year-old child from the home of the same couple that reported the infant missing last week. It's unclear what prompted officials to remove the 2-year-old. A spokesperson for Riverside County declined to comment, citing state confidentiality laws. Over the weekend, the family received a tip about an alleged sighting of the boy in Bakersfield. They notified the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, Hughes said, but have received no updates about the tip. A Sheriff's Department spokesperson said investigators are aware of the reported sighting but they were offered no specific information about the location for the reported sighting. The Uvalde Foundation For Kids, a national child advocacy group, retracted its offer to help search for the boy and a $5,000 reward for information about his disappearance. The group said it was concerned about Rebecca Haro's abrupt decision to stop speaking with the advocacy group and the sheriff's investigators.
