Buy 5 AI Laggards of Past Month to Tap Solid Upside in the Short Term

Yahoo20-06-2025
The artificial intelligence (AI)-driven astonishing bull run of 2023 and 2024 has suffered major hurdles in 2025. The tariff and trade policies of the Trump administration, the Fed's ambiguity over further rate cuts this year, fears of a near-term recession and the availability of a low-cost Chinese AI platform have unnerved investors.
However, the technology sector has lately returned to its northward trajectory. Expectations of a U.S.-China trade deal and the ongoing negotiations with several other major trading partners of the United States boosted market participants' confidence.
Despite these positives, several large-cap AI stocks provided negative returns in the past month. Surprisingly, a handful of these stocks with a favorable Zacks Rank currently offer strong price upside potential in the short term.
Five such stocks are: Arista Networks Inc. ANET, HubSpot Inc. HUBS, Twilio Inc. TWLO, Adobe Inc. ADBE and Okta Inc. OKTA. Each of our picks carries either a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) or 2 (Buy). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank stocks here.
The chart below shows the price performance of our five picks in the past month.

NY's Attorney General Picks Up Zelle Fight From CFPB

New York's attorney general is picking up an effort dropped by the Trump administration's Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, accusing a bank-owned financial-technology company of allowing fraud to run rampant on the Zelle peer-to-peer payments network. New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Early Warning Services LLC on Wednesday in New York state court, claiming that EWS's rush to market 'made the Zelle network an obvious conduit for fraudulent activity.'

Goldman stands by call that consumers will bear the brunt of tariffs after Trump blasts bank's economist

In the face of blistering criticism from President Donald Trump, Goldman Sachs economist David Mericle on Wednesday stood by a controversial forecast that tariffs will begin to hit consumer wallets. Trump lashed out at the bank in a Tuesday post on Truth Social, suggesting that CEO David Solomon "get a new Economist" or consider resigning. Mericle, though, said in a CNBC interview that the firm is confident in its research, the president's objections notwithstanding. "We stand by the results of this study," he said on "Squawk on the Street." "If the most recent tariffs, like the April tariff, follow the same pattern that we've seen with those earliest February tariffs, then eventually, by the fall, we estimate that consumers would bear about two thirds of the cost." The source of the president's ire was a Goldman note over the weekend, authored by economist Elsie Peng, asserting that while exporters and businesses thus far have absorbed most of Trump's tariffs, that burden will switch in the months ahead to consumers. In fact, Peng wrote that Goldman's models indicate consumers will take on about two-thirds of all the costs. If that's the case, it will push the personal consumption expenditures price index, the Federal Reserve's main inflation forecasting gauge, to 3.2% by the end of the year, excluding food and energy. Core PCE inflation for June was at 2.8%, while the Fed targets inflation at 2%. "If you are a company producing in the U.S. who is now protected from foreign competition, you can raise your prices and benefit," Mericle said. "So those are our estimates, and I think actually, they're quite consistent with what many other economists have found." Of note, Mericle said Trump likely still will get at least some of the interest rate cuts he's been demanding of the Fed. "I do think most of the impact is still ahead of us. I'm not worried about it. I think, like the White House, like Fed officials, we would see this as a one-time price level effect," he said. "I don't think this will matter a whole lot to the Fed, because now they have a labor market to worry about, and I think that's going to be the dominant concern." Following modest gains reported this week for the consumer price index, and a weak July nonfarm payrolls report that featured sharp downward revisions to the prior two months, markets are pricing in cuts from the Fed at each of its three remaining meetings this year.

NY attorney general sues Zelle parent company, alleging the payment service enabled widespread fraud

New York Attorney General Letitia James on Wednesday sued Early Warning Services (EWS), which operates Zelle, alleging the electronic money-transfer service fails to protect its users from 'massive amounts of fraud.' The lawsuit alleges that EWS knew that key features of Zelle's service made it susceptible to fraud, but it still failed to implement safety measures and allowed scammers to steal over $1 billion. EWS is owned by a consortium of large US banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Capital One and Wells Fargo. The lawsuit, filed in New York State Supreme Court, comes after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau dropped a similar case against some of Zelle's backers in March, part of a broader pullback in enforcement under the Trump administration. 'No one should be left to fend for themselves after falling victim to a scam, and I look forward to getting justice for the New Yorkers who suffered because of Zelle's security failures,' James said in a statement. Zelle did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment. EWS launched Zelle in 2017 as a competitor to popular payment apps like Venmo and Cash App. Zelle said its payment network had grown to 151 million users in 2024. The NY AG's lawsuit claims that in its rush to sign up new customers, Zelle allowed safety precautions to fall by the wayside. The lawsuit claims that scammers were able to sign up for Zelle through a quick registration process that lacked verification steps, allowing them to pose as businesses and government entities, tricking unsuspecting users into sending funds under false pretenses. Zelle's irreversible transfers also meant that many consumers were not able to get their money back after realizing they had been targeted in a scam, the NY AG claims. In one example cited in the lawsuit, a New York user was misled by a scammer into believing his home's electricity would be shut off if he didn't send money to Con Edison through Zelle. The New Yorker sent nearly $1,500 to a fraudulent account called 'Coned Billing.' By the time he realized it was a scam, his bank, JPMorgan Chase, told him they couldn't get his money back, the AG alleged. The lawsuit, which is partially redacted, alleges that EWS and its partner banks knew for years about Zelle's fraud problem but failed to take meaningful steps to fix the problem. The suit also said EWS failed to remove fraudsters from the Zelle network after receiving complaints and that EWS did not require banks to reimburse customers for certain scams. EWS began to adopt basic network safeguards in 2023, years after they were first proposed, which significantly curtailed fraud on the platform, the lawsuit says. In December, the CFPB sued EWS and three of its owner banks, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo, for 'allowing fraud to fester.' Hundreds of thousands of consumers who filed fraud complaints about Zelle were largely denied assistance, according to the CFPB's lawsuit. Some victims of fraud were even told to contact the fraudsters directly to try to recover their money, the suit alleged. However, earlier this year, the CFPB dropped its suit against EWS, along with several other cases against companies that had been accused of hurting consumers. The dropped lawsuits come as the White House has made efforts to sideline the CFPB since President Donald Trump returned to office in January. The NY AG's lawsuit is seeking restitution and damages for New Yorkers affected by fraud on Zelle's platform, along with a court order mandating that Zelle adopts anti-fraud measures. CNN's Matt Egan contributed to reporting.
