Shipwrecked in the Amazon
At least under normal circumstances. A drought that began in 2023 deepened last year into the worst in the Amazon's recorded history. In Manaus, a sprawling city of more than 2 million, the depth of the Rio Negro, a major branch of the Amazon River, reached an all-time low of 40 feet in October, almost 25 feet lower than would be typical at that time of year. The Peruvian photographer Musuk Nolte has documented the drought's impact on Manaus's outlying communities. Many residents live in houses meant to float on the water; the drought has left them effectively shipwrecked. One river trader, who typically transported his bananas by boat, told Nolte that he was forced to carry them overland in 104-degree heat. Others saw no choice but to abandon the lives they'd always known and try their luck in the urban tumult of Manaus itself.
Through years of reporting in the Amazon, I've gotten to know the region well. Viewing Nolte's photos is like waking up in an alternate reality: a sea turned to desert. But the transformation shouldn't come as a surprise. Over the past 50 years, an area of the rainforest larger than the state of Texas has been razed to make way for farmland and cattle pasture. Scientists have long warned that this could disrupt the virtuous cycle through which trees fuel rain clouds by releasing water vapor. Nolte's photos seem to show the results.
One of his images features a mostly dry riverbed, its sand mysteriously streaked. Nolte told me that the marks had been left by outboard motors riding perilously low as water levels plunged. He calls them scars, visible signs of a wounded planet.

One dead, dozens injured from earthquake in Peru
Emergency services closed this roadway due to cliff collapses caused by an earthquake in Lima, Peru on Sunday. Photo by Mikhail Huacan/EPA-EFE June 16 (UPI) -- At least one person was killed and and dozens injured in Peru after an earthquake shook the coastline near its capital city of Lima. According to a series of posts on X from Peru's National Emergency Center, or COEN, and National Institute of Civil Defense, or INDECI, the 6.1-magnitude quake sent 36 people to hospitals around Lima. Eleven of the injured have reportedly since been discharged, while the condition and nature of the injuries suffered by the 25 still hospitalized is unclear. The death was reported to have occurred in Lima's Independencia district. Fourteen health facilities were also damaged, as were 13 educational institutions. An unspecified number of homes were reported to have collapsed in the Mi Perú district in the province of Callao. Peruvian President Dina Boluarte Zegarra's office announced Sunday that the coastline was being monitored after the incident, which the United States Geological Survey measured as a 5.6-magnitude earthquake, with an epicenter about 14 miles southwest of Callao. A 3.6-magnitude aftershock was also reported in Callao province.

An earthquake off Peru's coast shakes capital, leaving 1 person dead and 5 injured
LIMA, Peru -- A 5.6 magnitude earthquake that struck off Peru's central coast Sunday, rattling Lima and the port city of Callao, has left one person dead and five injured, authorities said. The earthquake happened at 11:35 a.m. local time in the Pacific Ocean, according to the United States Geological Survey. Its epicenter was located 23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of Callao, west of the capital Lima. A 36-year-old man died in northern Lima while 'standing outside his vehicle waiting for a passenger' when a wall from the fourth floor of a building under construction detached and fell on his head, Police Col. Ramiro Clauco told RPP radio. The five people injured are being treated in hospitals, the Emergency Operations Center said. The agency also reported damage to roads and educational centers. President Dina Boluarte is heading to Callao to monitor developments, the Peruvian presidency said on X. Footage shared by local media also showed cars hit by falling debris, damaged houses and collapsed billboards. All of Lima's districts felt the earthquake, Hernando Tavera, executive president of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, told local TV channel N. Local radio stations reported that a professional football match at Lima's Alberto Gallardo Stadium was paused for several minutes. A mass at Lima's cathedral was also interrupted, after frightened worshippers fled the scene. Peru is located along the Ring of Fire, a path along the Pacific Ocean characterized by frequent earthquakes and active volcanoes.

Expert rejects flood fear as Peruvian sues German energy firm RWE
An expert witness said a tidal wave emanating from a melting glacial lake is unlikely, as an oral hearing began on Monday in a civil case brought by a Peruvian farmer against Germany energy giant RWE. In the lawsuit, which began in 2015, 44-year-old mountain guide and farmer Saúl Luciano Lliuya from the town of Huaraz wants RWE to contribute to the costs of protective measures for his house, which is threatened by a potential flood wave from the Palcacocha glacial lake in the Andes. RWE does not operate in Peru but the farmer is being supported by German environmental organizations Zukunftsfähigkeit and Germanwatch in the civil case in the western German city of Hamm. He says RWE shares responsibility for the risk to his house because the company produces large quantities of greenhouse gases through its power plants in Germany, Europe and the United States. This contributes to global warming, which may lead to the glacial lake melting, he argues. Geoscientist Rolf Katzenbach told the Hamm Higher Regional Court that the probability of a flood feared by the farmer is a "ridiculously small" 1%. If a flood wave does occur, the plaintiff's property will be flooded to a maximum height of 20 centimetres and the structure of the building would not be affected, Katzenbach added. The first oral hearing is expected to conclude on Wednesday.
