Baniyas dominate on Day 1 of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship
On a day defined by grit and willpower, it was Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club who stole the show, topping the leaderboard after a stellar performance across divisions.
In a championship that showcased fighters brimming with ambition, Al Jazira Jiu-Jitsu Club came in a close second, with the rising force M.O.D UAE securing third place.
The event, hosted by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF), brought together a passionate mix of youth, adult, and master-class athletes competing for podium glory and valuable ranking points.
Prize Money Doubled
A key talking point was the championship's doubled prize pool, thanks to the visionary directive from Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. The move not only enhances competitiveness but also reflects the nation's deepening investment in jiu-jitsu as the UAE's national sport.
Yousef Abdullah Al Batran, Board Member of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, praised the generous directive from Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, to double the championship's prize money. He said this move reflects the UAE leadership's commitment to the development of top-level sports, especially jiu-jitsu, which has become the country's national sport.
'The fourth round of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship is especially important,: he said. "It marks a key moment in the competition and gives us a chance to evaluate club performances and how well the athletes are prepared to continue their success in the upcoming stages.'
Jasem Al Marzooqi, CEO of AMMROC, stated that the strong organisation and professional level of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship reflect the leadership's ambition to position the UAE as a leading global sports destination.
'The championship is progressing with every round. Both the technical and organisational levels show how successful the overall system is, giving athletes the ideal environment to grow and excel," he said.
Heart of a Champion
One of the day's standout performances came from Bouchaib Elidrissi, the Moroccan master representing Baniyas, who clinched gold in the Men's Masters Brown/Black Belt –62kg division.
"This achievement means a lot to me, especially since I faced
an opponent in the final who was 20 years younger," he said., "This championship is a unique platform for athletes of all ages to showcase their talent and chase their goals.
"I sincerely thank the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and the organisers for the tremendous effort they put into delivering such a professional event and creating a competitive environment that matches our ambitions and pushes us to give our best.'
Coaches Step Up
Igor Lacerda, head coach of the Sharjah Self-Defence Sports Club, said preparation for this round went beyond physical training. 'We focused on mindset and tactical flexibility. Winning championships isn't about one weekend – it's about consistency across every round.'
As the championship unfolds over multiple rounds, each event brings clubs and athletes one step closer to season glory.

Dubai's Aayan conquers St. Andrews, punches ticket to Curry Cup finale in NY
For Dubai golfing prodigy Aayan Dadabhoy, the road to the Curry Cup began on the windswept fairways of St. Andrews, where he held his nerve to claim victory in the Underrated Tour event and secure a coveted spot in Steph Curry's Junior Golf Tour finale. At just 17 years old, Aayan has already made his mark in the junior golf scene, but it was his performance at the Kittocks Course at Fairmont St Andrews in Scotland that truly announced his arrival on the global stage. Posting rounds of 73 and a final-round 67, he finished four under par, winning by three strokes and cementing his reputation as one of the UAE's brightest golfing talents. Representing the Tommy Fleetwood Academy Dubai, based at Jumeirah Golf Estates, Aayan's rise reflects both his dedication and the strength of junior golf development in the UAE. Recalling the final moments of his St. Andrews triumph, Aayan said: 'I birdied the 10th and 11th, and I knew someone in my group was just a shot behind me. I stayed in the present, stuck to my game plan, and made two big up-and-downs on 14 and 15. By the time I birdied 17, with friends from the Muslim Golf Association cheering me on, I felt confident I could finish strong.' That strong finish not only secured victory at the Home of Golf but also earned him a trip to New York for the Curry Cup finale, held from September 10–12 at the iconic Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey. The Curry Cup is the season-ending championship of the Underrated Golf Tour, founded by NBA star Stephen Curry to promote diversity and inclusion in junior golf. It brings together 24 of the world's top junior players to compete for the ultimate prize. 'Being part of this event is a huge privilege,' Aayan told Khaleej Times from Scotland. 'It's an amazing experience for my playing career, and it'll help me as I look for the right university in my final year of school. I couldn't have done it without the Underrated Tour, Steph Curry, and everyone who's made this possible.' For Aayan, the Curry Cup represents more than just a tournament, it's a chance to test himself against the best junior golfers globally. 'Competition is healthy when you're trying to grow your game,' he said. 'I know I've got what it takes to win, but it'll be a tough challenge. Playing against these players makes you work harder, and it's all about preparation.' That preparation has already taken him across continents. Earlier this summer, he competed in the U.S., finishing fifth at the FCG Callaway Collegiate in California, 15th at the Junior Worlds, and representing his country at Pinehurst for the U.S. Kids Team Championship. 'Playing in America is very different from Scotland,' he said. 'But experiences like those build the focus you need for tournaments like this.' Looking beyond New York, Aayan has his sights set on even bigger stages. 'No matter how I play at Liberty National, I'm grateful for the experience. After this, I'd love to chase an invite to the Challenge Tour or one of the UAE's professional events. That would be one of my top goals for the year.' For now, his focus is squarely on New York and the chance to bring the Curry Cup back to Dubai.

Gill rewarded for Test performance as India eye Asia Cup glory in UAE
After being left out of three previous series in the shortest format, Test skipper Shubman Gill was on Tuesday named in the T20 squad as India set sights on Asia Cup glory ahead of next year's T20 World Cup. Gill, 25, returned to the 15-man squad as deputy to skipper Suryakumar Yadav, thanks to the stellar role he played with the bat in the recent Test series against England. The top-order batsman scored 754 runs as India's relatively young squad fought from behind to square the five-match series 2-2. The eight-nation Asia Cup (September 9-28) in the UAE will be the first major event in the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup in India in February and March. "We obviously see some leadership qualities in him, and his form in England was what we were hoping for. He exceeded all our expectations, which is a great sign when there's so much pressure as captain," chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar said in Mumbai. Suryakumar said he was happy to have Gill in the squad as he did not get too many opportunities in the past. "Last time when he (Gill) played T20 for India, post T20 World Cup when we went to Sri Lanka - not Zimbabwe - when I was leading, he was the vice-captain," Suryakumar said. "So that's where we started a new cycle. After that, he got busy with all the Test series, and he didn't get an opportunity to play T20s because he was busy playing Test cricket and Champions Trophy. So he's there in the squad, and we're happy to have him." The Asia Cup will begin on September 9 with defending champions India set to face hosts UAE a day later in Dubai in the eight-nation tournament. India and arch-rivals Pakistan have been clubbed in Group A and clash on September 14. Gill, who was named Test skipper after the retirement of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli earlier this year, last played a T20 international in July 2024. While Gill is back in the T20 team, there is no place for Yashasvi Jaiswal. "With regard to Yashasvi, it's just unfortunate again," Agarkar said. "There's Abhishek Sharma: what he's done over the last year or so - plus he can bowl a little bit - he gives us that option if required. One of these guys was going to miss out. Yashasvi just has to wait for his chance." Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah also made a comeback to the T20 ranks after opting out of two matches in England to manage his workload. Bumrah's last T20 outing was India's World Cup title win over South Africa at Barbados in June 2024. Kohli and Rohit quit T20 internationals after the triumph. Bumrah will be part of the pace attack alongside left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav lead the spin charge. Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma are the two wicketkeepers in the side. "This is the first big tournament we are playing since the (2024) T20 World Cup," Suryakumar said. "We have played three-four bilateral series. It's a good tournament to test ourselves. After this, there are a lot of T20s - close to 20-22 T20s in total - before we play our first game in the (2026) World Cup, so I think the journey starts from the Asia Cup." Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Shubman Gill (vice-capt), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (wk), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh.
