More Hollywood stars join protest letter over Gaza ‘genocide'
Hollywood heavyweights Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Riz Ahmed, and Guillermo del Toro have added their names to a letter condemning the film industry's silence on what it called 'genocide' in Gaza, the organizers confirmed Friday.
The petition, signed by more than 370 actors and filmmakers, also denounced Israel's killing of Fatima Hassouna, the young Gaza photojournalist featured in the documentary Put Your Soul in Your Hand and Walk, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival Thursday.
The organizers of the letter said the French actor Juliette Binoche, who is chairing the jury at Cannes, also added her name to the letter, along with Rooney Mara, US indie director Jim Jarmusch, and Lupin star Omar Sy.
Binoche had initially seemed to pull back from supporting it as the festival opened on Tuesday, instead delivering a tribute to Hassouna, who was killed with 10 members of her family the day after she learned the film would be shown at Cannes.
'She should have been here tonight with us,' an emotional Binoche said at the opening ceremony.
The growing protest comes after several days of mounting bloodshed in the besieged Palestinian territory, with 120 people killed on Thursday and 50 reported dead since midnight.
Schindler's List star Ralph Fiennes, as well as Richard Gere, Mark Ruffalo, Guy Pearce, Susan Sarandon, Javier Bardem, and directors David Cronenberg, Pedro Almodóvar, Alfonso Cuarón, and Mike Leigh said they were 'ashamed' of their industry's failure to speak out about Israel's siege of Gaza in the original letter.
In her Cannes speech Tuesday, Binoche also referenced the Israeli hostages taken by Palestinian group Hamas in its October 7, 2023 assault on Israel, which sparked the Gaza war.
Sicko and Bowling for Columbine director Michael Moore and French actor Camille Cottin of Call My Agent fame are among other entertainment industry figures who have added their names to the letter since Tuesday.

Gerard Butler on bringing Stoick to life in live-action ‘How to Train Your Dragon'
RIYADH: Scottish actor Gerard Butler is returning to the Viking Isle of Berk, but this time he is trading his animated voice for full costume and presence in the live-action adaptation of 'How to Train Your Dragon' — a remake of the beloved DreamWorks franchise, helmed by three-time Oscar nominee Dean DeBlois. In this new retelling, which releases on June 12, Mason Thames plays the inventive Hiccup, a young Viking who defies tradition to befriend Toothless, a Night Fury dragon. Butler reprises his role as Stoick the Vast, Hiccup's formidable father, stepping from the recording booth into full-bodied performance. 'When I'm doing the recording, the animation, I could pretty much turn up in my pajamas if I wanted to. But there's no getting away with that here. It was all of me. There's no excuses.' Butler praised his co-stars, including Nico Parker as Astrid and Nick Frost as Gobber, and especially young lead Thames. 'So, I think to play that Viking father who expects so much from his son, and his son who's trying his best and actually has all these incredible characteristics that I just can't see, was beautiful to delve into ... on sets with our clothes, with our costumes, and really believe that we were in that world. That was pretty epic.' Returning to Saudi Arabia for the film's press tour, Butler shared his affection for the Kingdom, saying: 'I had an incredible experience here and made some really nice friends. AlUla is beyond. I became very attached to that place, to its energy, its history, and to the community there.' Butler expressed his excitement for the audience, adding: 'There's so much … for them to see because there's so much in this movie. I think that some of the scenes of the dragons flying are some of the most beautiful, immersive, powerful scenes that I've seen on a big screen. But on top of that, I think that we have very complex, emotional, heartfelt performances and a story that they can also climb into. I think we have a lot of modern references that we can all like; the characters are so relatable. 'It's a big honor for me to be able to play this character again. I feel very lucky to be part of this franchise. I feel very protective of it because I was there. I was actually there even before Dean DeBlois was there, you know, because we had a different director way, way back. So I've been with it for a long, long time, and to see it start as just a little planet and then become a whole universe has been amazing.'

Osaka Expo pavilion celebrates 70 years of Japan-Saudi relations
OSAKA: Saudi Arabia's pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka is celebrating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Kingdom — the two countries first established their partnership on June 7, 1955. 'The relations go beyond a mere economic partnership to reflect the depth and diversity of our ties,' said Ghazi Faisal Binzagr, Saudi ambassador to Japan and the pavilion's commissioner-general. 'Today, we build on the strength of the past and harness the momentum of the present to jointly shape a new vision for the future. With Expo 2025 taking place in Osaka and Saudi Arabia hosting Expo 2030 in Riyadh, our two countries stand at the forefront of global exchange, showcasing the latest innovations and sustainable technologies, and contributing to shaping an inclusive future for all.' The Saudi Pavilion has hosted various business events and highlighted trade opportunities offered by Saudi Vision 2030, strengthening economic ties between the two countries. Additionally, it highlights the Kingdom's role in bringing Japanese culture to the Middle East through local manga studios, whose works will be featured in August. The pavilion aims to draw more Japanese tourists to Saudi Arabia, targeting 30,000 visitors annually before Expo 2030 Riyadh. Saudi Arabia's participation in Expo 2025 Osaka is part of the Saudi-Japan Vision 2030 strategy, which includes more than 80 projects across industries including culture, food, media and entertainment, energy, and education. The pavilion, which offers more than 700 diverse and engaging events such as daily shows and live performances, has attracted more than half a million visitors since it opened in April.
