(Stand-Alone) Saudi foreign minister arrives in Syria for talks
DAMASCUS: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan al Saud travelled to Damascus on Saturday, where he said his country would be at the forefront of efforts to rebuild Syria. Prince Faisal had landed in the Syrian capital earlier, alongside an economic delegation on a visit to discuss ways to support Syria's war-ravaged economy.
"We affirm that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will remain at the vanguard of countries standing by Syria in its path towards reconstruction and economic recovery," Prince Faisal said in a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart.
Saudi Arabia "will present joint financial support alongside Qatar to public sector workers" in Syria, he added. He said Saudi economic delegations would visit Damascus soon, noting that "work is underway to discuss investment support and economic and trade cooperation" between the two countries.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al Shibani, meanwhile, expressed his country's thanks "for the role Saudi Arabia has played, particularly on the lifting of sanctions" by the United States. The two countries "have entered a strong stage of joint investment and economic cooperation", he said. — AFP

Iraq condemns ‘repeated Israeli attacks' on Lebanon
BAGHDAD: Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani on Sunday condemned Israeli attacks on Lebanon as he hosted Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, on his first visit to Baghdad since taking office. Sudani also said he discussed with the visiting Lebanese president "shared opportunities in various sectors" including energy, telecommunications and commerce. Over 1,100 migrants crossed Channel: UK govt data
LONDON: Some 1,194 migrants arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel in small boats on Saturday, a record for this year according to government data. It brings the overall number of migrant crossings this year to 14,808, an unprecedented figure despite several measures in place by the French and UK governments to curb the crossings. The latest crossings, which UK Defence Secretary John Healey described as "shocking", fall short of the all-time record of 1,300 migrants arriving on small boats in a day in September 2022. But they will still prove a headache for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has been at pains to toughen his rhetoric on irregular immigration amid pressure from the far right to slash migrant numbers. Starmer unveiled tough new immigration policies this month that include doubling the length of time before migrants can qualify for settlement in the country and new powers to deport foreign criminals.
