New version of Sabah Native Court Enactment in the works, says CM Hajiji
Hajiji said the Sabah Native Affairs Council has prepared a draft of the new enactment, the Sabah Native Court Enactment 2025, which is under review by the State Local Government and Housing Ministry.
He said input on the draft is being gathered from the state's Attorney General's Chambers, Public Service Department, and the Finance Ministry.
It would then be submitted to the state Cabinet and tabled at the State Legislative Assembly.
Hajiji said this during the launch of the 2025 Kaamatan Festival at the Pisompuruan Open Hall, attended by Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, who is also the 2025 State Kaamatan Festival committee chairman, and Kadazandusun Cultural Association president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
Meanwhile, Hajiji reiterated the state government's commitment to improving Sabah's self-sufficiency level (SSL) in agricultural produce to bolster its food security.
The Chief Minister revealed that Sabah's current SSL stands at just 22.8%, with the state still relying on imported food.
In response, the government revived the Sabah Rice and Rice Board (LPBS) last year and is working to develop approximately 22,146ha of abandoned padi fields across several districts, including Tuaran, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Keningau, Papar, and Tambunan.
"This initiative will help the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Ministry increase Sabah's SSL to at least 30% by 2026 and 60% by 2030," he said.
Hajiji also highlighted this year's Kaamatan Festival theme, 'Kaamatan Untuk Semua, Kaamatan For All, Kaamatan Montok Toinsanan', which carries a significant message of inclusivity. He emphasised that the festival is not limited to one community but is a shared celebration that embraces all citizens, regardless of race, religion, or background.
"The Kaamatan Festival is no longer just a harvest festival. It has become a symbol of unity among the people, providing a space for us to understand and respect each other, while celebrating our cultural diversity," he added. - Bernama

Sabah assembly to be dissolved in mid-Sept?
KOTA KINABALU: With less than three months remaining before the automatic dissolution of the current five-year term of the Sabah assembly, political circles are anticipating that Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor will call for elections by mid-September. Talk among the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) political circles is the possibility of Hajiji calling for the election on the second week of September or immediately after Malaysia Day on Sept 16. They anticipate the dissolution could happen after the main Malaysia Agreement 1963 Action and Implementation Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that is scheduled for Sept 12 in Kuala Lumpur. Sabah hopes to see positive progress in negotiations regarding the 40% federal revenue returns to the state. The state has worked out an interim 40% share formula for federal tax revenues returns as a temporary measure to be discussed at the meeting that will be attended by Hajiji and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Any positive outcomes during the meetings especially on the issue of Sabah's 40% claim would bolster electoral mood in favour of the ruling state government under GRS and Sabah Pakatan Harapan. "We have to see the meeting outcome. If it is positive, it will be good for both GRS and Pakatan who are now working on an electoral pact," a GRS leader, who declined to be named, said. Some political chatter does not discount the possibility of a dissolution in early September just after the Aug 31 National Day celebrations. The 16th Sabah Legislative Assembly automatically dissolves on Nov 11 to pave way for the 17th state election that should be held within 60 days of dissolution. Sabah Umno election director Jeffrey Nor Mohamed said that he believes GRS and Hajiji are waiting for the current issues, including the tragic death of Zara Qairina Mahathir and the ongoing corruption issues linked to the videos, to subside. "It is possible they will go for dissolution in the second week of September and probably an election in October," said Jeffrey, whose Sabah chapter of Barisan-Umno is against working with GRS, which is also part of the federal unity government. Opposition Parti Warisan information chief Datuk Azis Jamman said that Warisan is already in election mode, actively engaging in all 73 state seats. "As far as we are concerned, its already election mode with less than three months to dissolution. It is up to Hajiji to decide the dissolution," he said.

Kuala Lumpur: Parti Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has categorically denied his party's involvement in the 'Langkah Kinabalu' move that attempted to topple the Sabah Government led by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor in early January 2023. The former Sabah Chief Minister dismissed claims linking Warisan to the political episode, which Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlina Arif described as a betrayal of public trust. Speaking to FMT at Parliament, Shafie attributed the Langkah Kinabalu incident to internal disputes between Hajiji and Sabah Umno Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, rather than any orchestrated move by his opposition party. 'Langkah Kinabalu was not my move. Ask them what they were fighting about. We (Warisan) are the opposition,' he said. The controversy resurfaced after Norazlina, who was with Warisan during the attempted takeover, publicly criticised the move as 'the greatest betrayal' of Sabahans who expected unity similar to the federal Unity Government. She said the political manoeuvre was allegedly motivated by promises of four to five Sabah Cabinet positions for Warisan leaders. The takeover attempt ultimately failed due to insufficient support, with six Umno assemblymen backing Hajiji and strengthening his position. Hajiji, who became Chief Minister in September 2020, retained support from GRS and Pakatan Harapan representatives, including Norazlina at the time. Following the failed coup attempt, Bung was removed from his Deputy Chief Minister post, replaced by Tanjung Keramat Assemblyman Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. Immigration raids put off to facilitate digital registration of foreign workers

Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government on Thursday announced a moratorium on immigration enforcement in Sabah to allow the State to complete its ambitious programme of digitally registering foreign workers. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the move was aimed at helping the State Government gather accurate, centralised biometric data to better manage its large migrant population. 'We agreed today to facilitate the digital registration of foreign nationals by the Sabah Government. For that reason, we will suspend enforcement to give them space to register under this initiative,' Saifuddin told reporters after chairing two joint meetings with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor at Menara Kinabalu. Saifuddin said 113,282 foreign nationals have so far been recorded in the system, mostly plantation workers, but with plans to extend the registration to agriculture, manufacturing, mining and quarry sectors. The database, which stores photos and fingerprints, will enable real-time monitoring, tracking and policy-making based on credible data. Saifuddin stressed that the exercise has nothing to do with granting citizenship or permanent residency, and that citizenship matters were handled separately under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution. At the same meeting, the Special Committee on Citizenship for Sabah processed 1,247 applications, drawn from over 2,000 submitted between 2021 and 2024, covering categories such as children born out of wedlock, those in care homes and applicants whose parents are non-citizens. The Home Minister also addressed the often-misunderstood plight of the Bajau Laut, or sea gypsies, a stateless community traditionally living in coastal waters off Sabah. He said State-led projects, such as one at Pantai Manis in Semporna, were providing structured settlements and training opportunities in sectors like agriculture and plantations, including at Felda Sahabat, contrary to public perceptions of neglect. 'Far from being abandoned, there are efforts to house them on land and train them for work in various fields. These are rarely reported, so people don't see the State Government's ongoing work,' he said. Turning to the high-profile death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, Saifuddin confirmed that Bukit Aman's special task force had found serious procedural failures by local police, including a decision not to proceed with a post-mortem despite having no legal barrier to do so. He said the exhumation had been completed and preliminary forensic findings were consistent with earlier medical examinations. The results have been shared with Zara's mother and her lawyer.
