Thousands of Sikh pilgrims visit Pakistan to celebrate Vaisakhi festival
Pakistani authorities this year granted more than 6,500 visas to Indian Sikhs, a higher number than previous years. Visas to travel between the two countries are normally difficult to obtain, but the governments have a special arrangement that allows pilgrims to visit shrines and places of worship.
The main Vaisakhi ceremony was held in Nankana Sahib, where the founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak, was born.
Gurdwara Janam Asthan is one of nine Sikh places of worship at Nankana Sahib, which is located some 75 kilometers (46 miles) west of Lahore.
Rinko Kaur traveled from India's western Gujarat state, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is from. She said she was initially hesitant about visiting Pakistan.
'My family warned me about going … and said I should be with a group to be safe,' Kaur said.
But she said the people have been welcoming.
'I saw people coming out of their houses, waving as a welcome gesture. We feel as if we are celebrities,' said Kaur, who plans to visit other Sikh holy sites in Pakistan in the coming days.
Many Sikh holy sites are located in Pakistan after the British partitioned the subcontinent into separate nations in 1947 following two centuries of colonial rule.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Vaisakhi was a time of 'great joy for farmers.' The festival also encourages a spirit of hope, unity and renewal that inspires and unites communities, Sharif added.

Referring to the recent successes of Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos and the historic stand of Marq-e-Haq against unprovoked aggression, he paid rich tribute to the valiant Armed Forces of Pakistan and the resilience of the Pakistani people. He particularly honoured the Shuhada—those who laid down their lives for the defence of the homeland He also highlighted that people of India Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir continued to suffer under brutal oppression and reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering political, moral, and diplomatic support for the Kashmiri people in their legitimate struggle for self-determination. He also reiterated Pakistan's solidarity with the oppressed Palestinians. Highlighting the special bonds between Pakistan and Qatar, he thanked the State of Qatar and the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for their support and positive and constructive role during recent regional challenges and also for graciously hosting over 300,000 members of the Pakistani community. Osama Idrees is a distinguished officer from Pakistan's Inland Revenue Service, currently serving as the Community Welfare Attaché at the Embassy of Pakistan in Doha. Indian forces kill 3 extremists linked to April Kashmir attack
dpa New Delhi India on Tuesday said its security forces killed three extremists believed to be responsible for a deadly terrorist attack in April in Indian-administered Kashmir, in which 26 people were killed, sparking a confrontation with Pakistan. The three 'terrorists' were shot dead in a firefight with the military, Home Minister Amit Shah told parliament during a debate on India's military action against targets in Pakistan in May. All three were 'Pakistani' nationals, Shah said, adding there was 'irrefutable evidence' of their involvement in the April 22 attack that killed mostly Indian tourists. According to Shah, investigations into weapons, ammunition and other evidence helped confirm their role. 'These three rifles were used to kill our innocent citizens,' he said, noting that the weapons were found on the bodies of the dead. One of the men was reportedly a commander of the banned Islamist militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which is believed to be based in Pakistan, although it is outlawed there as well. Tensions between India and Pakistan soared following the militant attack, which occurred in a mountain meadow near the town of Pahalgam. India accused its neighbour of complicity, a claim Islamabad denied. India launched missile strikes on May 7, and Pakistan downed several Indian aircraft. Both sides exchanged missiles, drones and heavy fire. The crisis was defused with a ceasefire on May 10. The Himalayan region of Kashmir remains a flashpoint between the two nuclear-armed rivals. Both countries control parts of the territory but claim it in full.
