ABU DHABI (WAM)The visit of US President Donald Trump to the United Arab Emirates has been widely hailed by Emirati and American business leaders as a pivotal moment for strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations and expanding cooperation in key future-oriented sectors such as technology, energy, and investment.Humaid Mohamed Ben Salem, Secretary-General of the Federation of UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FCCI), stated that President Trump's visit provides significant momentum to joint investment opportunities, particularly in critical sectors, including AI, space, renewable energy, healthcare, and advanced technology.He highlighted that the UAE is already home to over 1,800 American companies and that this number is expected to rise in light of the visit's positive impact.Ben Salem also pointed to the UAE's participation in the 'SelectUSA' Investment Summit in Maryland from 11th to 14th May as a testament to the strong ties between the private sectors in both countries and a key platform to expand bilateral collaboration.Danny Sebright, President of the US-UAE Business Council, described the visit as a defining milestone that opens a new era of cross-border collaboration, especially in areas such as AI, advanced technologies, energy, and defence.Sebright noted that UAE investments in the US have exceeded $1 trillion, spanning landmark projects in AI infrastructure, clean energy, and manufacturing. Among these is a massive partnership between UAE-based MGX, Microsoft, and xAI to build out advanced AI infrastructure in the US, under a project renamed "AI Infrastructure Partnership," with an anticipated $100 billion in investments and the creation of 20,000 jobs.He also referenced ADQ's $25 billion agreement with Energy Capital Partners to power US data centres, ADNOC's growing portfolio in low-carbon energy and natural gas infrastructure in partnership with ExxonMobil and OMV, and Emirates Global Aluminium's plan to establish the first new aluminum smelter in the US in over three decades.Sebright emphasised that these investments reflect a long-standing, trusted economic partnership. Other strategic ventures include Masdar's clean energy projects across multiple US states, and Mubadala's pivotal investment in GlobalFoundries, creating over 18,000 direct and indirect jobs in New York State alone.In the field of nuclear energy, Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC), underscored the UAE's collaboration with major US nuclear technology firms as a global model for responsible and peaceful nuclear development.Al Hammadi explained that ENEC is actively investing in next-generation nuclear technologies and microreactors through partnerships with companies such as TerraPower, Westinghouse, and X-energy. These efforts are part of the ENEC ADVANCE Programme, launched in 2023 and are aimed at advancing nuclear capabilities both within the UAE and abroad—including in the United States, where the clean energy sector is witnessing robust growth.
President Trump's visit to the UAE underscores the depth of the US-UAE relations and a shared vision for future-driven cooperation. It reflects a joint commitment to bolstering ties not only in politics and security, but also across key sectors shaping the global economy—fostering stability, innovation, and prosperity for both nations and the broader region.

Uzbekistan qualify, UAE face long wait for World Cup berth
Uzbekistan qualified for the Fifa World Cup for the first time in the nation's history on Thursday as a 0-0 draw with the UAE in Abu Dhabi ensured Timur Kapadze's side claimed a top two finish in Group A of the AFC Asian Qualifiers. A trio of saves by goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov kept the Emiratis at bay in the second half to take Uzbekistan onto 18 points from nine games and maintain their four-point lead over third-placed UAE with only Tuesday's matches remaining in the third phase of qualifying. The qualification is Uzbekistan's first in eight attempt since the Central Asian nation gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and joined the Asian Football Confederation three years later. The UAE, meanwhile, will advance to the fourth phase of qualifying, where new coach Cosmin Olaroiu will continue the nation's attempt to book a Fifa World Cup berth for the first time since 1990. With the UAE needing a win to keep alive their hopes of automatic qualification alongside Group A leaders Iran, it was Fabio Lima who had an early sight of goal for the hosts, the striker shooting straight at Yusupov. An early injury saw Oston Urunov replaced by Abbosbek Fayzullaev and the substitute almost unlocked the UAE defence in the 26th minute, exploiting the space down the left to pull the ball across the face of goal. But none of his team mates were able to capitalise. It was Uzbekistan who went closest in the ninth minute of the half as Khojiakbar Alijonov slipped the ball through Majed Hassan's legs before curling over a cross that Fayzullaev rose to meet with a powerful header, only for the ball to thump back off the bar. The hosts, however, started to turn the screw as Olaroiu's side pushed for the goal that would deliver a win that would keep the UAE's dwindling chances of automatic qualification alive. Yusupov was on hand to prevent the UAE from taking the lead as the game approached the hour mark, diving to his left to keep out Lucas Pimenta's close range header after Fabio Lima's testing free kick into the penalty area. And the Uzbekistan goalkeeper saved another strike by Fabio Lima that the Brazil-born attacker attempted to bend into the bottom corner with time ticking down, Yusupov pushing the ball to safety to seal his nation's historic progress. Meanwhile, left back Aziz Behich scored a last-minute winner as Australia moved to the brink of qualification for the 2026 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Japan in Perth on Thursday. With time running out, Behich pounced on Riley McGree's cut back and turned to lash the ball into the net to the delight of a crowd of 57,226 that had endured a laboured performance from the Socceroos. Australia remain in second place in Group C behind the already qualified Japanese.

UAE's 2026 World Cup hopes hit by Uzbekistan stalemate in Abu Dhabi
The UAE's torturous bid for 2026 World Cup qualification will extend to an additional round after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Uzbekistan in Abu Dhabi. The point was enough to guarantee the Uzbeks the second automatic qualifying place from this phase of the Asian competition, alongside Iran. It meant the side from central Asia will be heading to the World Cup for the first time in their history. The wait for a return to the tournament for the first time since 1990 will go on for the UAE – but the dream is not yet dead. They have one game left in this phase, a dead rubber against Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek on Tuesday. Then they will have to prepare for a three-team round in October, the winners of which will qualify. The build up to the game had been full of frenzied anticipation. The UAE captain, Khalid Essa, and new coach Cosmin Olaroiu, spoke of players and fans working together as a collective to achieve their goal. It was a surprise, then, that there were thousands of empty seats in the home sections when the game kicked off. The contrast was stark: the away section was filled two hours before the game. Hundreds more were outside awaiting entry. A number complained they had valid tickets for the UAE section, but said they were not being admitted. The appetite for tickets among Uzbeks had been voracious. After all, their side were on the brink of history. The away section was limited to around 1,000, but it was reported as many as 5,000 had applied to get in. Some of those waiting outside had done their best to ingratiate themselves. A number were wearing Emirati-style kanduras, while others had UAE scarves around their necks. Another fan of Uzbek origin had brought along the passports of him and his young son. They are American citizens and had travelled from the United States especially for the game. The atmosphere long preceded even the teams arriving, as shown in Al Wahda Mall, the shopping centre which is adjacent to the Al Nahyan Stadium. In the hours leading up to the game, there were more people wearing sky blue Manchester City shirts with 'Khusanov' on the back than there were wearing the white UAE replica shirts. Abdukodir Khusanov was the big name in the visitors' line up. The speedy Uzbek centre back was playing in the city from where he is employed. The UAE seats did fill up as the first half went on, and the side of the field opposite the grandstand was mostly filled. It also had some pre-prepared banners to encourage the teams, with slogans like 'Together we can do it', 'Dreams will come true' and 'We trust you guys'. And yet the atmosphere remained flat, and the official attendance topped out at 9,820 – a long way short of the 16,000 capacity. Amid it all, the UAE players struggled to find a spark. What made matters worse for them was that the quiet meant they could hear their manager's ever-increasing displeasure. Not even someone with Olaroiu's glittering CV could be guaranteed to turn the UAE into world-beaters immediately. In his first match in charge of the national team, there was no great overhaul of the side he inherited from Paulo Bento. He did make a couple of notable tweaks, though. Ali Saleh, the Al Wasl winger who only featured sporadically towards the end of the Bento era, was brought straight back into the starting XI. Majed Hassan, Olaroiu's tried and trusted midfield lieutenant, was also brought in to pin down the centre of the field. There were clear teething issues, though. The home team struggled for fluency, and that suited an Uzbek side who only required a point to achieve qualification. While they tried to push ahead, albeit in disjointed fashion, they left gaps at the back. In the 54th minute, Abbosbek Fayzullaev, the Uzbek substitute, crashed a header against the crossbar with the goal at his mercy, after a fast break by the visitors. Olaroiu's first major landmark in his new job was to see himself get booked. His side had just come close to breaking the deadlock. Two Uzbek players went to ground in the aftermath and, as he vented his frustration, Olaroiu was shown a yellow card. The home team did create some openings thereafter, but nothing that allowed them to strike. Uzbekistan kept them at a safe enough distance, and when the final whistle blew, the away contingent – in the stands and on the field – were overcome with euphoria.
