Indy readies for dual WNBA All-Star, Indiana Black Expo celebration
Regardless of the forecast, mid-July is poised to be the hottest stretch of summer in Indianapolis.
Why it matters: Indiana Black Expo's Summer Celebration and WNBA All-Star 2025 sharing calendar and venue space means the city will need to accommodate two marquee events and countless community-focused initiatives all at once.
What they're saying: Mel Raines, CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, said the first call she made after being contacted by the league about All-Star hosting duties was IBE president and CEO Alice Watson.
"We wanted to be sure that that was something that Alice and the organization thought would be complementary to what they were doing, and that we could sort of coexist in downtown together. And she quickly got back to me and said, 'I think this is a great opportunity and I think we could work together in a really cool way.' And so we've been off to the races since then," Raines said.
"This is really the most exciting time not only for Indiana Black Expo or PS&E, but for the city of Indianapolis," Watson said. "None of us will be sleeping. We'll just keep going and going and going."
Catch up quick: Summer Celebration starts July 11 with the Ecumenical Service at New Direction Church and ends July 20 with the IBE's Gospel Explosion at the Indiana Convention Center.
All proceeds generated by the event support IBE's year-round initiatives related to education, business development, community learning, performing arts, college scholarships and more.
WNBA All-Star tips off July 18, featuring the inaugural Fever Fest concert at White River State Park and culminating in the sold-out game the next day.
A skills challenge and three-point shootout are among the on-court highlights, while off-court action includes the return of "Indy's Home Court," a downtown takeover of arts and culture events first seen during last year's NBA All-Star game.
State of play: Four Indiana nonprofits have received $1 million in grants to create a lasting legacy around the All-Star event. Here's what they're working on.
Fletcher Place Community Center: Enhancements to early learning facilities and community spaces.
The Parks Alliance of Indianapolis: Renovation of the basketball court at Al E. Polin Park.
Marion County Commission on Youth: Facility renovations and the launch of a student ambassador program for 25 female high school students.
Marvella Foundation: Development of a "Championship Arena" at its Fair Oaks Farms campus in Newton County.
Zoom in: Other community engagement plans include an effort to help women entrepreneurs obtain women-owned business enterprise certification and free Zumba sessions held across Indy in partnership with Centers of Wellness for Urban Women.
Meanwhile, donors and volunteers are still needed for All-Star Cure on July 12-13.
The event is a partnership between the host committee and the Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank that invites up to 500 women to donate healthy breast tissue in support of cancer research.
What's next: More announcements, including celebrity guests to be added to Summer Celebration's guest list for the education conference on July 17, and the Style Zone July 18-20.

'Too risky at the moment': A Springsteen covers band has been advised not to play in his hometown

Most specifically he's a close personal friend of ex-US Democratic president Barack Obama. And while many stars – particularly in the US – believe that music and politics shouldn't mix, Springsteen has never been shy about speaking his mind. Now, those opinions have had an unlikely consequence. Appearing in Manchester on 14 May, kicking off his E-Street band's European tour, rock's most famous working class hero told the audience: 'In my home, the America I love – the America I've written about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years – is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration. "Tonight, we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experiment to rise with us, raise your voices against authoritarianism and let freedom ring! 'The richest men are taking satisfaction in abandoning the world's poorest children to sickness and death. They're taking sadistic pleasure in the pain they inflict on loyal American workers. They are abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators against those struggling for their freedom,' Springsteen implored. And it didn't take long for his words to resonate with the Republican President back home: 'I see that Highly Overrated Bruce Springsteen goes to a Foreign Country to speak badly about the President of the United States," Trump said on social media. "Never liked him, never liked his music, or his Radical Left Politics and, importantly, he's not a talented guy — Just a pushy, obnoxious JERK. 'This dried out 'prune' of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that's just 'standard fare.' Then we'll all see how it goes for him!' With Springsteen currently on tour in Europe – a continent that has recently been rocked by Trump's turnarounds on NATO and random tariff wrath – it's likely he was on safe ground. However, back in the US, The Boss's rabble-rousing soon found a target closer to home. No Surrender, a Springsteen covers band currently on the road in the US to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Boss's Born To Run, had been booked to play at Riv's Toms River Hub, in Toms River, New Jersey, on 30 May. New Jersey, of course, famously being Springsteen's hometown. However, on Sunday, the band received correspondence from the venue's owner that an appearance by the band was now 'too risky at the moment'. 'This is not political for us at all,' Springsten sound-alike Brad Hobicorn told 'We're just a cover band that's trying to make some money and people rely on it financially. We're the ones really getting hurt.' Hobicorn even offered to have his band play a non-Springsteen, classic-rock cover set instead but owner Tony Rivoli refused to pay the agreed $2,500 for a more generic covers band. 'Unfortunately it's just too much money,' he wrote in text messages obtained by the outlet. 'I wanted to do the Springsteen tribute for that money… We would have done well but now because Bruce can't keep his mouth shut we're screwed. 'Whenever the national anthem plays, my bar stands and is in total silence, that's our clientele. Toms River is red and won't stand for his bulls__t.' Rivoli later insisted that it was the band themselves that had chosen not to play in Toms River, and they told that ultimately they did not want to perform there due to 'negative vibes' and 'a safety concern.' The band have now been given an alternative venue to play and are currently scheduled to be appearing at New Jersey's Headliner Oasis in Neptune Township instead. Springsteen met Obama in 2008 when he was on the campaign trail prior to his first run as president. The two shared similar, working class upbringings, dreams, aspirations and opinions as to what should be done and soon Springsteen was a regular at high profile fund-raisers and, in 2020, the pair even produced a podcast together. Renegades: Born in the USA, a series of conversations between Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen saw the two talk about 'their lives, music, and enduring love of America – despite all its challenges'. 'We are both creatures stamped Born in the USA. Sixers draft history: Michael Carter-Williams selected No. 11 in 2013 With the NBA draft right around the corner, now is the time to look at some past drafts and see what the Philadelphia 76ers have done in their history. The Sixers have selected some big-time players in the past who have become an important part of the fabric of the franchise's history. This edition focuses on the 2013 draft when the Sixers selected Syracuse guard Michael Carter-Williams with the No. 11 overall pick. Philadelphia had just traded All-Star guard Jrue Holiday to the New Orleans Pelicans earlier in the evening so the Sixers needed his replacement. They found it in Carter-Williams. The 6-foot-6 guard went on to win Rookie of the Year with averages of 16.7 points, 6.3 assists, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.9 steals while shooting 40.5% from the floor. He had one halluva NBA debut going for 22 points, 12 assists, nine steals, and seven rebounds while guiding the Sixers to an upset win over LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and the defending champion Miami Heat. Carter-Williams looked like he was going to be a Sixers fixture for quite some time. However, he missed time to begin the 2014-15 season due to offseason shoulder surgery and he got off to a slow start. He was then traded to the Milwaukee Bucks at the deadline in 3-team deal that netted a 2018 draft pick. Carter-Williams would go on to play nine years in the league. He played for the Sixers, Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets, Houston Rockets, and Orlando Magic. He averaged 10.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists across his nine seasons playing in the league.
