Meenachil river basin project back on track after delay of four decades
Marking a major step forward for the long-stalled Meenachil River Basin Project, the State government has sanctioned funds to initiate a study to revive the project According to Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine, the State Cabinet has approved a mobilisation advance of ₹54 lakh, which is 25% of the total consultancy fee of ₹2.13 crore, to WAPCOS Limited under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti. A memorandum of understanding has already been signed between the company and the Irrigation Department. At the heart of the project is a plan to ensure a year-round flow in the Meenachil River by channeling surplus water from the Moolamattom hydroelectric station into the river after power generation. The scheme is also expected to bolster irrigation facilities in the agrarian regions of Kottayam and Changanassery taluks. 'A perennial flow in the Meenachil River will help mitigate drinking water shortages and also prevent the intrusion of saline water during the summer months in the low-lying areas,' the Minister said. The infrastructure blueprint includes the construction of a check dam at Arakkulam Moonunkavayal. From there, water will be diverted via a 500-meter canal into a 6.5-km tunnel, leading to Moonilavu panchayat in Kottayam district. A further 200-m open channel will carry the water into Kadapuzha. Originally envisioned during the tenure of former Minister K.M. Mani, the initial version of the project proposed the construction of a 75-meter-high dam in the Meenachil basin, encompassing a reservoir spread across 228 hectares. A preliminary study had been conducted at the time and a Bengaluru-based agency carried out a refraction survey to assess subsurface rock formations required for tunnel boring. However, progress was derailed when the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) constructed a separate tunnel from Vazhikadavu to the Idukki reservoir, diverting water through an independent weir. Later, a State-appointed expert committee ruled the proposed Adukkam dam technically unfeasible. The revised proposal now focuses on diverting water upstream of the Malankara Dam and constructing a series of small check dams along the Meenachil River and its tributaries.

How Himachal's ‘1 Bride, 2 Grooms' Tradition Works: Wife Decides — Same Room Or ‘Shoe Sign' At Door
Sunita Chauhan married brothers Pradeep and Kapil Negi in a polyandrous wedding in Himachal Pradesh, sparking debates on the ancient custom of Jodidara. In parts of Himachal Pradesh, there exists a tradition that has its roots in the Mahabharata. If you couldn't guess it, we are talking about Jodidara, aka an ancient custom of polyandry where a woman willfully gets married to two men. Recently, two brothers from Shillai village of Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh, got married to the same woman in accordance with rituals followed by the Hatti tribe. The incident has now grabbed the spotlight, with debates emerging around the concept of polyandrous weddings. On July 12, the bride, Sunita Chauhan, married brothers Pradeep and Kapil Negi, as a joint decision without any external pressure. The three-day event, which wrapped up on July 14, was celebrated with several 'Jajda" customs. As per a report by The Times of India, a priest performed 'Seenj", chanted mantras, sprinkled holy water and offered jaggery to invoke blessings from the Kul Devta (family deity). How Jodidara Works The practice of Jodidara is acknowledged in Himachal Pradesh's revenue laws. It is also linked to Sections 494 and 495 of the Indian Penal Code as a part of marital relationships. According to a PhD thesis titled Polyandry in the Himalayas: Social-economic background of Himalayan Polyandry, published by former chief minister YS Parmer, the wife has complete autonomy in deciding how time is distributed among her husbands. YS Parmer further explained that sometimes a shoe or a cap is placed outside the room to indicate that the wife is with one particular husband. 'In most cases, the wife sleeps with all her husbands in the same room… she decides, according to her own wish, which husband to be with that night. However, she performs her duties with each brother in turn. Typically, equal time is given to all husbands. Complaints rarely arise," wrote Parmer, as quoted by Hindustan Times. top videos View all Why Polyandry Exists In Himachal Pradesh Polyandry persists in Himachal Pradesh even in modern times due to social, cultural and economic factors. Some of them are land preservation, family unity and security, cultural identity and community acceptance. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Kerala rises in protest over nuns' arrest in C'garh
Kochi: Anger and shock mounted in the state on Monday over the arrest of two Keralite nuns in Chhattisgarh on charges of religious conversion and human trafficking, with various church organisations condemning it as an attack on minority rights and religious freedom. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It also drew political reactions, with UDF MPs staging a protest in the Parliament House complex, demanding their immediate release. Ministers P Rajeeve and Roshy Augustine visited the home of one of the arrested nuns in Angamaly and expressed solidarity, while BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar said a delegation led by the party's general secretary, Anoop Antony, would visit Chhattisgarh to look into the matter. Sisters Preethy Mary and Vandana Francis, belonging to Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, and a third person, Sukaman Mandavi, were arrested at Durg railway station on July 25 on a complaint from a local Bajrang Dal functionary accusing them of forcibly converting three girls from Narayanpur and trafficking them. A railway police official said they had been charged under Section 143 (trafficking of persons) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 4 (religious conversion) of Chhattisgarh Religious Freedom Act, 1968. Rajeeve told the media after meeting the nun's family that the incident should be seen as an infringement on the freedom of religion guaranteed by the Constitution. He said besides protests, all possible legal remedies would be explored and the CM had tasked them with pursuing them. He said they had spoken to the family and assured them of govt support. Appropriate follow-up action will be initiated through the resident commissionerate in Delhi, he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A delegation of bishops also visited the nun's family in Angamaly. President of Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) and Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath said the development was extremely objectionable and distressing. "There is no doubt that this incident is a blatant violation of the minority rights and religious freedom guaranteed by the Constitution. The Durg incident has instilled fear among Christian minorities in the country. It is just one of several ongoing incidents in which even the clergy's right to travel freely in their religious attire is being denied," Thazhath said, adding that PM Narendra Modi and the Union govt should take immediate steps to provide the necessary protection for religious minorities. The archbishop, however, said the Church did not support using the issue as a political weapon. "What is needed are actions that ensure the protection of the Christian minority, not politically motivated accusations. Support from all political groups is essential for this," he said. Meanwhile, in what appeared to be a criticism of the Church leadership's political stance, Metropolitan of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Yuhanon Mar Meletius, made a sarcastic Facebook post. Sharing a newspaper article about the protests over the nuns' arrest, Meletius wrote: "Why protest? Isn't it enough to felicitate them in Delhi during the next festival?" Kuriakose Mor Theophilos Metropolitan, spokesperson of Jacobite Syrian Church, said: "While Christian churches are attempting to view the harassment and attacks against Christians, especially clergy and nuns, in various parts of India as isolated incidents, there is growing concern within the Church and society as to whether these recurring events are part of a specific agenda by disruptive forces, aimed at undermining the mission of Christian churches. " Kerala Latin Catholic Association (KLCA) state president Sherry J Thomas said the Union govt should urgently intervene in the matter. He also demanded an investigation of the alleged coercion of the girls to testify against the nuns.
