Vera's Brenda Blethyn makes unexpected return to screens with co-star
Vera fans were left heartbroken when the ITV series came to an end earlier this year
Vera star Brenda Blethyn will unexpectedly return to screens on Sunday night when a repeat of the ITV drama airs.
Episode two of series 12 of Vera will be broadcast on ITV at 8pm, and fans will be thrilled to see Brenda as DCI Stanhope and her sidekick Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty) back on screens.

The synopsis for the episode reads: "Adapting to civilian life was not easy for Lance Corporal Conn Burns, and after a series of bad life choices, he found himself desolate, down and out on the streets of Newcastle.

"Attempting to get his life back on track, Conn had recently been making moves that would see him repay old debts, rebuild relationships, and get him off the streets.
"DCI Stanhope is called in after the body of Burns is discovered, and unearths secrets from his past and betrayal in the present."

Earlier this year, Brenda confirmed she would be hanging up her iconic hat and coat for the final time.
While admitting it was a difficult decision, the actress said she wanted to spend less time away from her family.
She explained at a Q&A event in London: "It was a big decision because I love the job, I love the people I was working with and I know they loved it too so it was a little bit of an emotional responsibility as well because if I stop, it's going to stop.

"I saw on the catering list one day, just on a typical day there were 76 people, so that's all those people. I console myself with the fact that there's a big studio opening in Sunderland next year so there will be lots of jobs available."

She added: "I was aware that people who would like to continue on it wouldn't be able to and that made me feel sad but as much as I like my Newcastle family, I have a family at home and I hadn't had a summer for 14 years and I thought, 'Bren, go and have a summer. Go home'. So it was a difficult decision."

Brenda's departure wasn't the only one to leave fans heartbroken, as Kenny Doughty confirmed he was leaving the series in 2023.
In the fifth series of the ITV drama, Aiden initially replaced Vera's original sidekick, Joe Ashworth (David Leon).

However, in spring 2023, he confirmed his "difficult decision" to leave. On Instagram, he expressed his gratitude, saying: "I want to thank everyone who's made this amazing time so joyous, ITV, Silverprint, all the brilliant cast and crew BUT of course my buddy and inspiration Brenda Blethyn. The perfect leading star who I owe so much to. I feel lucky to have you as a friend, you make me howl with laughter and have been a rock for me over the years. I can't thank you enough. Precious times."
He concluded his heartfelt message with a nod to the show's dedicated audience: "And finally, the Vera fans: without you and your support, I would never have made so many films. You really are the best fans in the world. Thank you so much for your loyalty and love for the show."
David Leon returned to Vera following Kenny's departure to play Joe until the series came to an end.

Sheridan Smith in floods of tears while filming new ITV drama after painful family death

Sheridan Smith has been left with raw emotions after filming her new ITV drama I Fought The Law following the death of her brother Sheridan Smith was left emotionally shattered whilst filming her latest drama I Fought The Law. ‌ The BAFTA-winning star portrays campaigner Ann Ming, whose daughter Julie was brutally killed in 1989. The role brought back painful memories of her brother's heartbreaking death from cancer when she was merely eight years old. ‌ She revealed: "This is the first real life story I've taken on since becoming a mum and there are different things I tap into now being a mother myself, especially with what Ann went through." It comes after a Midsomer Murders star was revealed as Sheridan's replacement in a 'gripping' thriller. ‌ "I've played parents that lose their kids before, and having lost my older brother, I would always think about what my mum must have gone through. While playing Ann, those feelings were much more raw to tap into." The programme follows Ann's battle to overturn an 800 year old double jeopardy law in her quest for justice for her daughter. Taking on such a weighty subject matter took a devastating toll on Sheridan, reports the Daily Star. She continued: "Whenever I play a real person, I really want to feel how they felt. I didn't go to drama school and I haven't been trained as an actor, so I don't really know how to turn those feelings on and off. "I just really try to go there emotionally. Ann was obviously in a state of angst from the minute Julie went missing, because she had that mother's instinct, she just knew. ‌ "And she fought and fought for justice. So she was in a state of anxiety for years, and I really tried to go there." Shooting I Fought The Law has proved the most challenging role Sheridan has ever undertaken. Yet she's not grumbling because her struggles pale in comparison to what Ann experienced. She explained: "I love playing real people because this job is all about people's hearts and getting their stories out there, so if it causes me a few months of distress, that's nothing. ‌ "It's just important for me to do Ann justice. Playing her has hit me more than any other role. "There were some really intense days on this job, but the emotion was a fraction of what it must have felt like for Ann, so you just get on with it." The programme will broadcast this autumn on ITV1.

But now it has been revealed that in an unearthed passage from her autobiography, Dani boasted about being a "qualified dancer". She said in her 2019 book that she would put "qualified dancer" under the list of qualifications on her CV. Writing in her book, which came out six years ago, Dani wrote about how she went to theatre school at weekends from the age of 2 to 14. "It was called O'Farrell's Stage School and I was a really good little dancer," she said. Dani added: "I'm not a bad singer but it was the dance stuff I loved more - jazz, tap, ballet, modern. I'd get home and prance around the house." Elsewhere in the book she writes up a mock CV where she states her qualifications include: "Qualified dancer and pretty good at singing (especially Dua Lipa or Ariana Grande at the top of her voice while cleaning the kitchen)." 'I'D BE HAPPY TO BE WHISKED AROUND' She also spoke about Strictly in her book, saying how she would jump at the chance of being asked to compete on the hit reality dancing competition. Actress Sarah Hadland and JLS' JB Gill were also accused of having advantages on the show because of their backgrounds and prior careers. But despite all of their experience, nor Tasha, Sarah or JB won the show. STRICTLY 2025 LINE UP SO FAR Gladiator Nitro's signing for Strictly was shortly followed by the announcement of three more contestants - Love Island star Dani, Doctor Who actress Alex Kingston and former footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink were then revealed.
