Sheridan Smith in floods of tears while filming new ITV drama after painful family death
Sheridan Smith was left emotionally shattered whilst filming her latest drama I Fought The Law.
The BAFTA-winning star portrays campaigner Ann Ming, whose daughter Julie was brutally killed in 1989. The role brought back painful memories of her brother's heartbreaking death from cancer when she was merely eight years old.
She revealed: "This is the first real life story I've taken on since becoming a mum and there are different things I tap into now being a mother myself, especially with what Ann went through." It comes after a Midsomer Murders star was revealed as Sheridan's replacement in a 'gripping' thriller.
"I've played parents that lose their kids before, and having lost my older brother, I would always think about what my mum must have gone through. While playing Ann, those feelings were much more raw to tap into."
The programme follows Ann's battle to overturn an 800 year old double jeopardy law in her quest for justice for her daughter. Taking on such a weighty subject matter took a devastating toll on Sheridan, reports the Daily Star.
She continued: "Whenever I play a real person, I really want to feel how they felt. I didn't go to drama school and I haven't been trained as an actor, so I don't really know how to turn those feelings on and off.
"I just really try to go there emotionally. Ann was obviously in a state of angst from the minute Julie went missing, because she had that mother's instinct, she just knew.
"And she fought and fought for justice. So she was in a state of anxiety for years, and I really tried to go there."
Shooting I Fought The Law has proved the most challenging role Sheridan has ever undertaken. Yet she's not grumbling because her struggles pale in comparison to what Ann experienced.
She explained: "I love playing real people because this job is all about people's hearts and getting their stories out there, so if it causes me a few months of distress, that's nothing.
"It's just important for me to do Ann justice. Playing her has hit me more than any other role.
"There were some really intense days on this job, but the emotion was a fraction of what it must have felt like for Ann, so you just get on with it."
The programme will broadcast this autumn on ITV1.

Fans will be able to purchase a dress worn by the late Dame Maggie Smith, who starred in the ITV programme's six series and two of its films as Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham. After bagging a job in the cooking slot on the BBC 's hit children's series Going Live!, Emma Forbes had secured her place on the nation's TV screens and in its heart. Finding fame on the popular show, presented by Phillip Schofield and Sarah Greene, she then went on to co-host the replacement Saturday morning kids' programme Live & Kicking for three years with John Barrowman and TV stalwart Andi Peters, who has just floored This Morning fans by revealing his real age. "James explained that my diet was actually too healthy. James told her to cut back on the sugary fruit and carbohydrates and eat more protein. Emma believes it reshaped her body and changed the way she ate forever. She also introduced an exercise programme, despite loathing it. "With the help of a personal trainer, I started a regime. My aim was to work my core muscles and tone my legs and arms. I'm very disciplined. I have three, one-hour sessions a week when I do everything from stomach crunches to weight lifting," she said. Speaking on the Lorraine show in 2019, she assured the public she hadn't ever had any tweakments or work done to maintain her youthful appearance: "There's no plastic surgery going on here! I'm not judgmental of people that do it, but I am that person that it would go horribly wrong on, so I'm too frightened and I just don't do it," she said. During the interview she also discussed how the menopause had affected her, saying it had made her worry irrationally. "It's caused terrible anxiety and a loss of confidence. An ITV sitcom dubbed 'the funniest ever made' has rocked up the Netflix chart after four full series dropped on the streamer. Plebs, created by Sam Leifer and Tom Basden, hit our screens on ITV back in 2013 and wrapped up six years later. Over the years there has been 39 episodes across five seasons. But fans were treated to a one-off special in 2022. Netflix's synopsis reads: 'Three hapless young men pursue love, good times and jobs that won't kill, maim or humiliate them in the anything-goes city of ancient Rome.' Although the sitcom finished in 2019, the programme is still a huge fan favourite and many will be over the moon to know that it's now available to watch on Netflix.
